  1. Not that the FCC pays attention to these things, but the WZVN Legal ID in this newscast open isn't exactly legal. It needs to say Naples first. Also, quite the unfortunate mispunch rolling the dead fish because of red tide VO when they talk about the new identity. Thank goodness smell-o-vision isn't a thing. If I were a betting man, I'd put money on Hearst's long-term unspoken plan is likely gradual consolidation through natural mid-market turnover attrition. Saturday evenings are the easiest place to test those waters because of low HUT levels.

  4. KTVU threw away its noon news format today and devoted the entire hour-long broadcast as a tribute to Mr. Richmond.

  5. Yeah, probably because of shorter channel number and high cable penetration in the market

  7. Updated to say that he died at 81. But it doesn't matter the age... he was the TITAN, the GIANT of Bay Area TV news to the likes of Van Amburg and Dave McElhatton. I just woke up to this, and this one hurts badly. There will never be another one like him again.

  9. Well, the new graphics package debuted over the weekend, who knows, maybe the studio's will too.

  10. Hearst stations usually have an app or weather promo with proper ID before the newscast intro so I'm not worried for the ID here and they'll probably adjust it quickly.

  12. At first, I was not impressed with the new set, I thought it was smaller and more cramped than the previous set. I'm glad tho that 6abc made this video and proved me wrong on my thoughts. It is bigger than the old studio and indeed it is much better than the previous. -- matt

  16. I am surprised they don't already simulcast newscasts instead of having two separately branded newscasts with the same reporters, on live, at competing times. SB, just me being a nerd with OCD: it feels odd, especially in the cord cutting era, when broadcast stations brand by their cable position rather than over the air. Is it that 2 and 7 catchier numbers, or "sexier" numbers from a logo design perspective than 20 or 26?
    1 point
  17. Glad the branding ended up here instead of Mobile & Pensacola. I figured this could be an eventual game plan with Sinclair if they ever totally merged their Pensacola and Mobile operations into one.

  18. It would make no sense for Fox to debut a new package after only two years of usage. This is also the first Super Bowl under the new NFL TV contract, so if they debut a new package in the next four years, it’ll probably be during preseason, like they did in 2010. Also, I can’t imagine many Fox affiliates are happy about seeing their daytime lineups interrupted on Friday for FS1 programming.

  19. Lots of interesting design decisions were made here…

  20. From a design perspective, they made the absolute correct choice to embed the ABC logo inside the "C" and have the peacock hanging off for a litany of reasons.

  21. Interesting that the ABC logo appears "first" even though WBBH is the actual Hearst-owned station.

  22. Super Bowl LIX is this weekend on FOX. They have only used the current graphics package for two full seasons since debuted at Super Bowl LVII. Could this be the year FOX uses the same look like CBS did last year? Or could they debut a new graphics package once again? I honestly think they are going to debut something new. FOX won't have the Super Bowl again for another four years so I think they will want to change up their look knowing it will be used for quite a while. 23. Dennis Richmond was a prominent fixture not only in the Bay Area but throughout California. The Ten O’Clock news was widely available due to KTVU’s superstation status via cable and satellite. Even as the number of Fox affiliates grew in the west, most opted to simulcast KTVU’s popular Ten O’Clock news — at one time the most watched prime time newscast in the country.

  29. I noticed that KALB-TV in Alexandria has started incorporating some elements of GrayOne into their weather segments. Recently, the station rebranded their weather team from "First Alert Storm Team" to "First Alert Weather." I managed to take a few screenshots from Zeam to capture the changes. Has anyone else noticed this or seen similar updates at other Gray stations?

  30. Did TEGNA drop the design hub too? Also, do you have an example of the ads? I think this will bite them in the ass, honestly.

  31. Netflix gets some creativity points for actually having a dedicated graphics package built around their logo (with CBS producing, I thought it was going to be just a rebranding of their graphics per the precedent of the Yahoo games from earlier). Though this scoreboard looks a bit iffy, almost like it's a preseason game on a Gray station. Not to mention the preseason-like errors (such as the Steelers somehow starting the game with only two timeouts)

  32. Carol Clarke has come up with a plan for retirement... next year at WYFF which will be 40 years (no firm date just yet). For her last year, she's transitioning to dayside to do more reporting from the field, and keeping the 6:00pm anchor chair. She will give up the 11:00pm to Sydney Shadrix. https://www.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=1121531476261934&id=100052152768666

  33. WTHR's Dave Calabro signed off and is now in retirement (will still do IMS duties) but it went unusual in his signing off—no celebration at the station, just a pre-taped message from IMS.

  34. That is their new severe weather ticker system Called MAX Alert Live. (We just updated here as well.) All Gray stations, when they switch over to MAL, will look like this regardless of whether they have GrayONE or not. (Some stations still have the old :LIVEWire system and have not converted over to the new software yet.)

  36. CBS did a few subtle changes this week, namely changing the down and distance arrow font to the condensed font that some graphics use, and bolding the font used for team names. The weird alternate "light mode" version of the scoreboard has also popped up.

  37. One could argue that there’s a similar layout between the two sets (video wall / home base / weather center). This (see below) is a good example of that… Old New Had they made some tweaks to the previous set, they could have extended its life a bit longer. This new set is a downgrade, imo. Plus, it’s poorly lit.

  38. https://506sports.com/ once again breaking down maps for the upcoming season in terms of TV coverage and its freaking amazing. Here are some updates though for Week 1 (I'm only doing week 1 as an example)... Yes, tonight's game in Brazil is only available on Peacock, unless you live in Green Bay (WGBA), Milwaukee (WTMJ), or Philadelphia (WCAU). FOX has the doubleheader this week to kick off the season: FOX Early Houston (KRIV) and Panama City (WPGX) switched on Thursday from the Steelers and Falcons to the Panthers and Saints. Providence (WNAC), Springfield, Mass. (WGGB.2); Portland (WPFO), Bangor (WFVX), Scranton (WOLF), El Paso (KFOX), FOX Alaska (KTBY/KATN.2/KJUD.3), and all Montana FOX affiliates switched on Thursday from the Steelers and Falcons to the Vikings and Giants. Des Moines (KDSM) switched on Thursday from the Vikings and Giants to the Titans and Bears. FOX Late Tallahassee (WTWC.2) and Baton Rouge (WGMB) switched on Thursday from Cowboys and Brows to Commanders and Buccaneers.

  42. The NBC and ABC live streams are now available on the same page on their website. From comparing both stations side by side, their lead stories were different, there were times when the same story was airing on both stations simultaneously like a Dollar General shooting. For the most part, the same stories were airing minutes apart on both channels. Wouldn't want any anchors to lose their jobs, but simulcasting makes sense if they want to cut costs.

  49. “A” studio but not “the” studio. Looks like, as was the case last time, they took a few days to relocate a piece of the set over to the second studio across the hall. That time, they had that “kiddie table” set in the main studio that they used while moving a chunk of the main set, this time they just used the newsroom while that happened.
