That would be obfuscation and obviously actionable if a company claimed in good faith to buy all the assets and then sell the ones they don't want off immediately against the seller's will. Yes, Apollo is not going to get anyone to take but a small fraction of them, but if somehow they do get a deal, there will be a clause where they can't be sold off for a certain period of time or if they go bankrupt.2 points

This is just … odd. What good does this do? They pay people for one less hour? How much does that save? It’s a piddly amount. KREM used to be strong and Tegna has destroyed it.2 points

WGN has a good offer, but CHSN already has a television partner in WJYS; the issue is that they need to convince them to switch to RTC next go around to force carriage (or CHSN pays them extra to bump it to their DT1 for the Sox season until this is all resolved so pay-TV fans can watch), or that CHSN needs to figure out their issues with Comcast. It's obvious they're asking for too much and need to lower their pricing to get on there, and Reinsdorf is stubborn. Also this would be self-inflicted and stupid on Nexstar's part; either they want to run WGN as a news-heavy CW O&O as intended by dumping the rights back in '19, or they go back to sports and create a messy situation where CW programming is bumped to Antenna TV and now you've made NASCAR and your college football partners mad because they don't have Chicago carriage or you're back to a situation where WCIU has to carry your stuff because of this goofy offer. This is a good proposal for WCIU or even WCPX, but it addresses nothing about the main problem with CHSN and will end with viewer annoyance, along with WGN staff having to deal with news at midnight once again because of West Coast road games.2 points

The smartest thing Apollo could do right now is split the TV and radio stations into two separate companies. They'd have a better chance of selling both if they did that.2 points

Move Closer To Your World got an official release for the first time ever last week: https://bucksco.today/2025/04/6abc-theme-move-closer-to-your-world/ (that article cites this article which might be paywalled: https://www.inquirer.com/arts/6abc-theme-move-closer-to-your-world-release-20250412.html )2 points

I cannot think of anything more value destructive. Just because Ed Ansin got away with it twice doesn't mean it can work when the product is diluted this much. In a billingual market, no less. Honestly I wouldn't be surprised to see Warren Buffett take the L after a year or two and unload WPLG to Mission so Nexstar can have a CW O&O for Miami. He's had some bad business moves re: media (buying the Media General newspaper chain, helping Scripps buy Ion) but this might be the biggest oopsie.2 points

Network O&Os are sending anchors and reporters. WNBC is sending anchor David Ushry and reporter Gaby Acevedo. I believe WABC sent Mike Marza. I don't know about WCBS.1 point

You think that would stop those suspected companies? Apollo can sell the group as a complete unit and one of these suspected companies could have quietly negotiated a TBA in the background. Once the Apollo sale is complete, whomever buys the stations, immediately sells the radio stations to the 3rd-party. Apollo has no recourse. The entire idea that the FCC grants licenses or allows local broadcasting to serve the public interest went out the window, when the greedy corporations began slashing budgets, experienced journalists and solely providing shareholder value, instead of catering to their communities. You made your point as if crippling the visual storytelling medium wasn't the entire purpose. Really, the 3 biggest station groups - Sinclair, Nexstar and Gray are lead by Conservative CEOs who are more interested in pushing their own opinions and sucking the assets out of local journalism than providing a public good. Why do we think NewsNation is still around? Sean Compton is a close friend of Donald Trump's. Nexstar's local stations are being siphoned from resources and Nexstar retrans agreement with cable vendors must include NewsNation, which both Neilsen and Comscore demonstrate has little value, but Nexstar keeps taking valuable assets away from their stations to propup Donald Trump's friend. So I call bullshit on the idea that this isn't the entire intent of these organizations and we cannot stop it.1 point

Gray usually launches 24/7 weather streams all the time (WOIO/WUAB and WLUC being two recent examples). However, I found another group that may do so as well... TEGNA and Weather Impact 24/7 streams. I found WVEC and WXIA to be the first two clients. WVEC: https://www.13newsnow.com/video/news/weather-impact-247/291-d223d83c-5a51-41d7-a209-d72fd28d6eb6 (according to this one, launched yesterday) WXIA: https://www.11alive.com/video/weather/11alive-live-weather/85-e76bbb55-2d2b-4b71-90b9-4dce96553ce5 (according to this one, launched in early March) EDIT: This is WXIA's first 24/7 weather stream in like around 5-6 years or so when they had that Weather Information Zone channel. EDIT (x2): Pictures here to prove it (apologies for the first one of the NBC peacock: its from one of my monitors.)1 point

Correct. Hearst made a strong bid to buy WJLA when the Albritton family decided to sell back in 2012/2013, but they didn’t want to do a piecemeal sell off.1 point

Truly hoping that day never comes. I'm hearing more and more that networks could eventually abandon the affiliate model. What does that future look like? Local tv stations with no network scripted programming? Just syndicated scripted and talk shows, local news, and national news provided by the station ownership groups?1 point

To me, Gray and local sports are a thing. I'm surprised there hasn't been a Gray Sports division by now. Regardless, here's another new one, and this Rose has its Thorn: KPTV/KPDX and the NWSL's Portland Thorns. https://www.kptv.com/2025/04/16/fox-12-launches-new-partnership-with-portland-thorns-fc/1 point

WGN interested in airing Chicago Sports Network broadcasts, confident a deal can work 'WGN TV is interested in carrying local sports again and believes there’s a path to air Chicago Sports Network broadcasts of the White Sox, Bulls and Blackhawks that much of the area has missed, the Sun-Times has learned. The sides would have to sort out a lot of details, such as how many games would be included and who would sell advertising for them. Though WGN isn’t positioned to pay a substantial rights fee — the teams would have to treat it as a marketing expense — it could deliver the teams their largest TV audience since they launched CHSN in October.'1 point

This is pretty much it; Coxpollo wants it to be 1997 where they can create an omnimedia company when nobody actually wants that. They're better off just keeping only the Atlanta, Orlando and Dayton clusters (or better, just the AM news/talk and FM simulcast) that are historically important to the company and so integrated into the TV stations that there's no way to easily break them up, and selling off the rest. They already created Summit Media the first time, which got the radio stations Scripps couldn't easily sell off, and that might just end up being the default direction they have to take.1 point

That story would change if the FCC indeeds eliminates the ownership cap. I'd imagine Nexstar, Gray and Sinclair owning all of the stations in the US.1 point

Not to invalidate his claims, but he's making some pretty serious accusations. Sounds like he wasn't happy in his role (which I'm guessing was as a morning reporter??) and wanted to move up. Anchor slots (or even anchor fill-in roles) often go to station vets and/or those with a lot more experience than he has. If he was looking to move up the ladder, WGN was the wrong station for him.1 point

Check THIS out! This was KARE 11's take on NBC's "Let's All Be There" promo from the 1985-86 season. NBC affiliates often request localized promo versions with the same musical arrangement, but KARE 11 created a unique arrangement that differs significantly from the standard version used for localized network promos. NOTES: Channel 11 was WUSA for one year before it moved to its rightful place, Washington DC on CBS affiliate Channel 9. WUSA in Washington also signed on July 4th in 1986, as did Channel 11 Twin Cities in 1985. Now, KUSA in Denver AND WUSA in Washington DC are on Channel 9. Still under the ownership of Gannett (now Tegna)1 point

They're not there now, but apparently Gray is on board to dedicate subchannels of WSLN (Rockford) and WNDU (South Bend) to this service. I'd hope that the secondary channel would be static when not in use to optimize bandwidth. I could see a future where Yvonne Stroud (whose husband Joe died in April) sells WJYS soon. They are probably making good money from this arrangement, which makes sense when considering that WJYS has primarily been a paid programming purveyor in 33+ years of broadcasting.1 point

I've spent around a year and a half browsing these forums (without a login), so I figured I would finally start an account. For those with an antenna in Chicago, good news!! The channel numbers for the network have been confirmed: WJYS 62.2, .3, "which will convert to HD and full time CHSN content beginning Oct. 1."1 point

The CBS News Detroit set doesn't look too bad. Graphics is okay. As is the new This Is CBS News Theme. With WWJ-TV returning to in-house local news production, I kind of pick up a WIAT 42 Daily News type vibe with the new CBS News Detroit newscast, from the starting out with 2 daily newscasts (at 6PM and 11PM), to having a small reporting staff. Hopefully CBS has plans to grow its presence in Detroit, considering local news/programming production is typically cheaper to produce and more profitable than acquiring nationally syndicated shows these days. I don't know what to make of CBS going in the direction of "CBS News (market name)" for local newscasts, when viewers would be used to the "CBS (channel number)", or station call letters, or the "Eyewitness Action News" brandings on local newscasts.1 point

I like that second photo; I think they might have to make a rule that the standing desks in the background need to be in the seated position for air. The computer monitors block some of the background. They've alluded to it in the articles, but they're struggling to hire enough people to put more news on the air.1 point

These are all good points. I’ve learned to forgive the technical stuff; yes, one could argue that they should clear these things up before broadcast, given that they’ve been preparing behind the scenes for a while, but first day jitters are normal. I’m not really a fan of how they put the logo in a white box, but that might be temporary for all we know. As someone who can be unreasonably pedantic about sets and presentation, I actually don’t mind that it doesn’t look “ultra flashy.” Having the newscast done in the newsroom is rather refreshing, and they did a good job freshening up the WKBD newsroom. What I didn’t like was the awkward story selection. I get that they want to have exclusives, but the top story on your first newscast really shouldn’t be about a fired basketball coach. I also agree on the lack of local reporters. If they wanted to make a good first impression, they should’ve had field reporters on day 1. Still, it’s a hell of a lot better than no news at all.1 point

Wirtz and Reinsdorf wouldn’t need to start entirely from scratch. They could feasibly buy out Comcast’s 25% share of NBCS Chicago and they’d have their own RSN. Given that Comcast can’t find a buyer for their RSNs (since they aren’t in demand,) this would be an easy way for Comcast to sell one of them. Both sides would essentially get what they want.1 point
-
Given that it's just internal talk at the moment, I suppose it's too early to tell what exactly might happen. Sounds like the possibilities are wide open at this point. Whatever the arrangement might be after October 2024, I assume it ought to launch with a heavy streaming component.1 point
