  1. For the Papal Conclave, CBS has sent Maurice Dubois across the Atlantic to Rome alongside Norah. Seeing the coverage right now amongst the networks, seems like NBC is soaking it in more in regards to not blabbering so much taking more opportunites to listen to the sights & sounds leading into the announcement than the other networks. ABC is utilizing Liz Nagy from their O&O in Chicago (WLS) for reporting from the Vatican. When the announcement was made, ABC & NBC had graphics up translating what was being said & also ABC for their coverage is utilizing for the text in the lower 3rds the font used by the O&Os as well as ABC News Live. ABC & FOX are first networks to sign off from coverage right at 2PM Eastern, interestingly KNXV (Phoenix) cut away & joined an ad in progress leading to the 11AM newscast. CBS & NBC are continuing, the latter makes some sense considering affiliates might be scheduled for NBC News Now. EWTN also signed off at the top of the hour.

  2. Probably more future-proofing than anything; if the Fox logo changes or they switch affiliations (or in the future Fox just stops operating on the traditional model), they don't have to change anything physically on the building, and when they take the WBRC baby steps it'll be easier if they decide to drop it in the future. Also like WMTV they can brand it neutrally and equally with GCSEN or whatever else Gray decides to operate out of it (note the extra space beneath the ground sign and plenty of room on the building fascia).

  3. This, and if you look at the tour of the building they give in the newscast, the logos on the glass panels in the production/weather/newsroom areas alternate "WVUE8" and "Gray". The same segment, I noticed "WVUE8" and "FOX8" were used almost interchangeably. Are they in tandem? It is transitionary? Not enough evidence to speculate long-term from what I watched.

  6. They're doing what they've been doing for months - for severe weather days they say Your Weather Authority is issuing a "first alert" and all branding is either First Alert or First Alert / Your Weather Authority. During regular weather, they call it Your Weather Authority. I have to give them credit - their first few newscasts utilized many of the elements of their new set and were largely free of technical hiccups. You'd expect and forgive a few hiccups on day 1, but they really did a fantastic job. I'm very interested in what's to come with their branding. Originally the sign on the gate said FOX8 (unless I'm losing my mind, which is possible, but it was easy to see, you drive by it lit up on the interstate), but then just before moving that changed and the signage on the building was revealed.

  7. Graham Media might be trying out a new way of managing stations. Per Rick Gevers, Graham’s WKMG in Orlando, Florida will not hire a new general manager, and “department heads [will] report to their corporate supervisors.” It reeks of Scripps and its station manager concept, where many stations replaced GMs with an existing department head who added “station manager” to their job title…while still running their respective department. The common link here? Sean McLaughlin, the ex-Scripps news VP who landed at Graham.

  8. Not necessarily. Graphics say First Alert but the weather intros (and even in some weather graphics) and in the set still say Your Weather Authority. WVUE can't decide on which brand to go 100% on.

  9. It came from this photo of the new building on the FB post linked a few posts back. My guess is that logo was a prototype in case they got permission to drop the Fox branding, and they commissioned the signage before deciding to keep the “Fox 8” brand. The one branding change they did make was the replacement of the longtime “Your Weather Authority” brand in favor of “First Alert”, carrying over (a non-italicized version of) the Helvetica Condensed font and the stylized thunderbolt from the previous weather logo.

  17. If we are all patient, we will learn the plan once SpinCo is about to be spun off. People being paid big bucks and in negotiations are doing their jobs. Wait and we will find out. The one known: NBC sports will continue to use SpinCo networks. That's all we know and no need to figure out how right now.

  19. It may just be since they brand their ABC/FOX as both KOTA Territory, they removed the ABC eye for consistency (Or the Gray Affiliate Logo Removal continues.) I do know GrayONE is coming later this year/early next year. There are quite a few stations ahead of them.

  21. Well, Sinciair not only wants the FCC to abolish the current ownership rules, but end ATSC 1.0 as we know it.... https://www.tvtechnology.com/news/sinclair-urges-fcc-to-abolish-station-ownership-rules-sunset-atsc-1-0 I sort-of agree that 3.0 is a superior standard. But if only Sinclair is behind it and other broadcasters are using it as a way to restrict viewership (through encoding and datacasting), then it sort of defeats the purpose of broadcasting as we know it. Streaming has proven to be a method where they hold the control. It's there one day and could be gone the next. If broadcasters have the same control, then consumers lose out as well.
