Allen Media Group somehow had the budget to (at least) consult with, of all design agencies, Vivid Zero/Defiant to come up with some drafts of a standardized look for its stations. There was a (now locked) thread on here a while ago where someone claimed that Allen stations would be getting a mandated look, and these could possibly be the package in question. These screenshots came from Defiant's most recent studio reel of news graphics.

Its rare for someone to stay at a small market station for so long. Yet, Briggs LeSavage stayed for nine years at KBJR-TV, and has pretty much done every single job you can think of in the newsroom, on air, and behind the scenes. Not to mention, she's a Duluth native, so it was easy for her to stay. I really do hope there's light at the end of the tunnel for KIMT. Allen has turned that station and its others into total shitholes. The sooner they are gone, the better. They need to sell TWC too.

Well, football season is underway with some changes in the talent roster: 1. Kevin Jeanes will shift to weekend evenings, and Pete Sack will shift back over to the weekend morning show. 2. Allison and Stefan will anchor Sunday-Thursday, and Natalie will anchor Friday nights. This would be the second time in about 20 years that this has taken place

Yesterday was WPLG's first day as an Indie station carrying sports telecasts. 3pm was HBCU - Hampton at Jackson State (the latter won 28-14) 7:30pm was USL Super League - Fort Lauderdale United FC vs. Carolina Ascent FC (ended in a 2-2 tie)

Actually, I don't care for either network, so let the popcorn fireworks fly! I'm curious to see how long this tit-for-tat battle lasts, knowing viewership for both networks is still pretty crap.

In case you're wondering how dire things are at an Allen station, this is not a good sign; one director and one anchor at KIMT on a high school football Friday night having to compile an entire newscast by themselves, along with game video and stats. Kamie Roesler should be proud of herself, but putting someone in this position should never be tolerated. But hey, glad Byron was able to send that suck-up baby gift to Tiffany Haddish rather than paying for an additional MMJ in Mason City/Rochester.

I just saw something on KTVD's schedule. First off, I didn't know that KUSA added another hour of news at 9am on KTVD. Then, I further looked at the schedule, and it looks like KUSA is about to copy KDVR. Starting Monday, Sept. 8th, KUSA will add an extra two hours of weekday news on KTVD from 10am-12pm. In other words, if you watch KUSA's news solely on KTVD, then you'll be able to watch the whole block from 4:30am-12 Noon, just like how KDVR does it.

In the markets where Nexstar and Tegna will be "merging" their newsrooms, I hope their competitors (Gray, Hearst, Scripps, Sinclair, the networks, etc.) are increasing the marketing and advertising budgets of their stations to take full advantage of the opportunity they're being handed.

It's amazing anyone at the station thinks blatantly copying WNT's ridiculously long opening and aesthetics, right down to Louis imitating David Muir's delivery, is a good idea. Someone actually signed off on this.

they aren't digging, NBC staffers are leaking because they didn't want Tom taking over, as if they should be allowed any say. As far back as his WTVJ days Tom had reputation for not putting up with lazy, mediocre people who phone it in. In those days, some these people would come to me at sfltv with "tips" to try and damage him by giving me "tips". So the story from college was known to me, which means it was known for a long, long time to people he worked with. As these "tipsters" came to me sometimes I'd ask the late WTVJ anchor Joel Connable about it and he told me, multiple times, Tom is ambitious, great reporter, who works hard and wants to earn his way up but he has no tolerance for mediocrity or behind the camera politics, so some of these people would tie themselves up into a knot if Tom dared to criticise. It was bad enough at times that Joel told me multiple times, unprompted, he'd had to step in and defend Tom from some of these scrags trying to undermine him with station management, sometimes inventing stories about Tom what he said or did, that never happened. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the same people are involved now. If my database on sfltv.com hasn't eaten the comments, there was a back and forth in the comments of one post between WTVJ staffers regarding Tom and since I didn't censor people, names were dropped about the situation.

From the comments on her instagram, it sounds like she is going to NYC and will remain with ABC on the network level. She referenced an apple (as in the Big Apple) and said we would still be able to see her on TV.

It doesn't seem like much thought was given when it came to design. Plus, I believe the weather desk isn't a functional work station and is just for show. The only good thing is the addition of the touch screen (which I assume is/was the one from the weather center). Honestly, they could have just added that, replaced the old FOX 32 logos, changed from TV monitors to LED seamless panels in the alcove and called it a day.

Apparently, Jim Gardner will have been there for the balance of that half-century of MCTYW, the way I understand this.

Philly and America's longest-running local news theme (and a record shattering one) Move Closer to Your World will turn 50 next year. That's the same year that Gardner will leave 6ABC.

Where would Christie fit in? She has joined 4pm permanently now.

After his retirement, the obvious schedule to me is: Noon, 4pm, 6pm: Brian, Sarah, Adam, Jamie (only 4/6), Alicia (only noon/4) 5pm, 10pm, 11pm: Rick, Sharrie, Cecily, Ducis, Alicia (only 5) I imagine they will eventually decide traffic between Jessica and Matt, with one doing mornings and the other afternoon/evening.

Wow, this hits hard. It's going to be a completely different landscape in market #4 without Jim. He absolutely earned and deserves his retirement after over four decades as Philadelphia's most trusted and beloved news anchor, but I personally will miss him on my TV screen every weekday evening.

Sad news to report from Phoenix. Bill Close, a longtime anchor at KSAZ (then KOOL & KTSP) in Phoenix, died Sunday at 91. Close, who KSAZ calls “the Walter Cronkite of Phoenix,” was best known for an on-air incident in 1982 when a gunman entered the KOOL studios and held Close and his camera man, Louie Villa, hostage for five hours. Close negotiated with the gunman and read a “rambling” statement from him. The gunman eventually surrendered. Another regional cable news channel is likely coming to an end. New England Cable News (NECN) is being dropped from Comcast cable systems on July 1. Comcast owns the channel and I believe that there is very little original programming airing; it's most simulcasts of WBTS/Boston (NBC O&O) newscasts, recorded lifestyle programming, and infomercials. While owner Comcast is dropping it from their systems, the article notes that other providers haven't announced its removal, so it may live on a bit longer.

Ugh. Another great one gone too soon. Former WYMT Chief Forecaster Brandon Robinson has passed away after battling with brain cancer for 9 years. He was 42. Usually, WYMT is not on the weekend anymore due to Gray's cuts from a year ago. The end of an era!

It is very difficult to me that we're ending the final weekend of 2013 on a somber note. It is with deep sadness and a heavy heart that I report to you that San Diego broadcaster Loren Nancarrow, the longtime weatherman from KFMB and KGTV and news anchor at KSWB FOX 5 died yesterday. Nancarrow passed away just after 6:30pm surrounded by his family and friends. He was diagnosed with brain cancer in February, Nancarrow was 60 years old. All of us at TVNT offer our thoughts, prayers and condolences to Loren Nacarrow's beloved wife Susie, his three adorable children and to Nancarrow's extended TV family at KFMB CBS 8, KGTV ABC 10, and KSWB FOX 5. Another sad announcement just in to TVNT, this one out of Houston. Former KTRK, KMOL, KEYE, KTRK and KIAH anchor Alan Hemberger has died today. Cause of death is unknown for right now. Unfortunately more tragic news for the folks at WATN (formerly WPTY) Memphis. Former sports anchor Corey Maclin was killed last night in a traffic accident. Maclin served as primary sports anchor for ABC 24/CW 30 for about 2 and a half years from 2010-2013. Maclin was far better known in Memphis as a wrestling promoter and announcer (in a city where that sport has been historically huge), and his tenure at ABC 24 was more of an experiment at WPTY's worst period of Newport ownership and just didn't work out that well, and he was let go just weeks before their recent relaunch. Regardless of that, Maclin was still very respected in the community and comments on social media this morning reflect a big, big loss. This makes now 4 WPTY staff members that have unexpectedly died in the last 5 years. Thoughts and prayers to the Maclin family and those at WPTY and elsewhere that knew him well.

John Hambrick has terminal cancer and just weeks to live. He helped lead WEWS to prominence in the early 1970s before going to LA, San Francisco, New York and Miami.

Former WTLV morning/noon anchor Sally Fox died on July 3 at the age of 58. She was at the station from 1988 to 1995, and while anchoring also founded a concern that runs group homes for the disabled, Angelwood, Inc. A couple ancillary items: -The graphic accompanying the article is from 1991, and it uses a 12 bug that is associated with their 1992-93 image. Looks like the "1992" theme debuted in 1991, and we know as of this week that the "1991" theme debuted in 1989 (or the fall of 1988, when WTLV returned to NBC after eight years with ABC). -The TVSpy article about Fox's death implies that Fox worked at WJXX, when WJXX wasn't on the air until 1997 or connected to WTLV until 2000.

It's a very sad, yet difficult day for many in the Houston area, and for the people at ABC 13 Eyewitness News. In sad KTRK 13 related news, the day sportscaster Bob Allen is to sign off the station for good, we learn that former morning weatherman, Doug Brown, died last night according to an Ed Brandon Facebook post. He was 79 the station reported. Brown worked in the broadcasting business for 50 years. Stops included KWTX Waco, KRGV Weslaco, KHOU 11 and then of course a long career at KTRK. He was a heck of a nice guy. What you saw on TV is was what you got in real life. He had a very calming presence. When I worked with him at KTRK, we would talk about Baylor University football. Brown retired from channel 13 in February 2008. Casey Curry replaced Brown at the station. We at TVNewsTalk offer our prayers and condolences to Doug Brown's family and the staff of KTRK ABC 13. Sad news to report to you. WCIA-3 Meteorologist Robert Reese passed away Tuesday night at a hospital in Chicago. He'd been battling pneumonia recently and dealing with cancer for many years. Robert began his career at WCIA 3 in 1998 and served as the station's chief meteorologist for nearly four years. All of us at TVNewsTalk send our prayers condolences to the staff of WCIA 3 News and to Reese family at this difficult time.
