  3. There actually is some information on this theme. You are not far off, but it is not Non-Stop! There is a BMI entry for KSFY under Bestor. BTW, Pinnacle Music is mentioned in the Hartford Courant, so they composed WVIT 1998: "After Channel 30 came up with the concepts, the graphics were developed by EGAD (Electronic Graphics and Design) of Dallas and the music was composed by Pinnacle Music Group of Utah, said Chris Gallagher, creative services director."

  4. That seems pathetically repetitive. Why not just open their news broadcasts with "This just in"? It's just the local news in Houston.

  5. Being such a huge fan of hers, I've been buzzing about this all week. I think these spots debuted last weekend, at least that's when I first saw one. And I was FREAKING OUT! Not that I understand what the hell CBS Eye on the Community is. Anyway, I'm hoping against hope that there's more to this, much more. I mean why else would they tap HER for this? They could have much more easily had someone already on staff do these. I've been good, keeping my affinity for Mary Ann Childers at bay on here because I always figured it was a pipe dream she'd ever be back on the news. I get how the business has changed, and I accepted it. But when they go and do something like this, I'm sorry, all bets are off and it's not my fault! And how great does she look?!? Hasn't age a day since she was unceremoniously let go nearly 10 years ago already. She's just so classy, the consummate professional. OK I could go on and on about her but I won't, you get it - I'm obsessed. But I will say this, Irika Sargent will be at Channel 2 two years October 19th. So if it was a two-year deal, ummm... And we all know Irika's done diddly for the ratings. Seriously, they might as well have a robot doing the news - that's exactly what she's like - one of those computer avatars. But I don't want to rip Irika too much, its not like she's a beyotch or anything. She just brings nothing to the table. Rob & Mary Ann together however would be ah-mazing. And I was never a huge Rob Johnson fan, but by now he's won me over. Just about 20 years in Chicago, he just quietly marked 10 years as CBS 2 10pm anchor (I think Bill, Walter, and Linda are the only other people on earth who can say that). And he's a great anchor, very smooth. And at this point, who are they going to get that's better than him? Unless Ron Magers is sick of retirement yet But what I was getting at is Rob & Mary Ann have a history, he auditioned back in 1998 to be her morning co-anchor before landing at WLS. They worked great together when he came to Channel 2, and most of all they've maintained a friendship ever since. Rob and his wife Stacy often get together with Jay & Mary Ann. The point is, Rob & Mary Ann have a chemistry on-air and off, and have a mutual respect for each other. And since they're both market veterans, her re-addition could be EXACTLY what Channel 2 so desperately needs. OMG, could this actually be happening?!!?

  6. You're correct. American Spirit and Raycom are 2 totally independent entities and each has to negotiate their own carriage agreements (Same for Mission/Nexstar and Sinclair/Cunningham). The "side car" stations may be run out of the other station (for example, the Raycom station provides Master Control and Playout services to the American Spirit station for a fee, provides a newscast for a fee, etc.), but other entities (marketing) are supposed to be completely independent (they may be independent, they may be linked at the hip...). Many times (but not always) the main station (Raycom, Nexstar, Sinclair, etc.) is a Big 4 station (with an easier carriage mandate), and the side-car station (American Spirit, Mission, Cunningham) is an independent/CW/MyNet station (with less of a desire to pay [as much as the bigger station]). Hope this helps. Jim

  7. In which it makes their stories more repetitive unless they get another one to use for a week. That is their purpose of being a news station for over 50 years.

  8. They were also the ad agency that coordinated The Best News of All in 1985. It won an Effie!

  9. So a few items relating to existing themes. KHON probably used MCTYW in the mid-70s. An NBC-KHON newspaper ad from September 21, 1975 shows KHON's slogan as "Closer to your world" and exhorts viewers to "Move closer to your world" by watching the 10:00 edition of Eyewitness News. WLUK used News People. Not much else to say, but "News People, in touch with people, TV-11 News" can't be anything else. (c. 1979) The newspaper described WBAY and WFRV's openers this way: "Channel 2, which perpetrates the pseudo-religious "2 Power," opens Action (!) News with a symphony and fanfare for Chuck Ramsay. A nice musical version of a teletype underlies the main melody. Judging by its opener, "5 Country" is located somewhere in the balmy Pacific. Nowhere in Wisconsin." WSMV was using Hello as early as early 1982, when it was reported that the station was getting constant calls for records and lyric sheets for "Hello Nashville". There is apparently a "Hello Macon" version, probably for WMAZ. WCCO-TV went to Tuesday to commission image songs in 1979. They got six of them, trying to make itself heard amidst the affiliation switch clutter of the other stations. "The songs play on local pride, Minnesota's climate, WCCO's Image and, In the sixth song, the fact that Channel 4 will remain stable while the other stations change. Channel 4's musical message started on radio stations two weeks ago, and on television last week. One recurring theme is to refer to WCCO as "Four Friends." The other slogan developed by the Carmichael-Lynch advertising agency Is, "You Know Where to Find Us."" Another article, from when KSTP was commissioning part of The News Image, suggests the music for WCCO's version of PM Magazine was also Tuesday.

  10. NewStar was introduced by Hubbard Broadcasting for stations to promote their new SNG vehicles. In addition to Stanley's stations, I seem to recall the Hearst stations also signed up, as did H and C (KPRC, WTVF, WESH, KCCI) and others WJTV, WTVT, KWTV as well.....

  11. I thought the format was OK, just some of the production was wayyyyyy off. The music playing throughout was probably the worst element of it. It overpowered everything during the news blocks. The weird camera angles were weird too.

  12. If they want to do a more laid back newscast (maybe tieless) for Friday's fine. But not with any of these formats. Keep it the same but maybe a little "looser" with music perhaps?

  13. God that was painful to watch. The first 15 seconds seemed like a poor spoof of a rap video or a slam poetry reading in some late night coffee shop. Then he's holding his script (?) on game show-sized cards like he's the host. He walks out onto set and starts talking like Dr. Phil or something. He also seems, no offense, a bit old to be doing a BuzzFeed/Snapchat-esque news show. It's crap like this that no one like watching local news anymore, then they wonder why these new formats result in plunging ratings. All of these things make The Now look better and better.

  17. Dana: Most People goin' out of business, do you know why they doin' it? Reporter: You think Channel 4 is going out of business? Dana: Uh-huh Reporter: No, We're becoming FOX. Dana: Oh y'all goin'..oh channel 11 is goin' out of business, huh? Reporter: no,no Here's the thing, man on the streets interviews are painfully funny. That said, I thought the WSVN affiliation switch interviews were cringy...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=id=TtrO2DNmZAw;t=40 that moment above it TOOK. THE. CAKE. 19. Actually, I submitted that sample a few weeks ago, but it was a lot longer when I emailed it to the NMSA's webmaster. The audio file included three cuts, two from the aforementioned sports and political promos that I culled from the respective YT clips (the only ones that were high quality) and excerpts from one of KFOR's "24 Hour News Source" updates and a 10:00 p.m. promo that were featured on a VHS that I found in my house a few years ago. The tape was recorded -- presumably by my mom -- in the summer of 1992, and included large portions of two "NBC Monday Night Movies" taped off of KFOR (the audio clips from that tape I had to record to WavePad using my earbuds, since I don't have a video capture card). The high quality cuts were meant to be included in the sampler, as was the news update intro that the NMSA opted to use as a sample open, since the tape didn't have an actual newscast from that period on it. The same tape also includes some footage from KOCB during that time period. I should note, though, that from what I saw on the tape, some elements of the "News Team 4" graphics package looked like a knockoff of KOCO's John Christopher Burns package of that same timeframe. BTW, Finally... someone has a full KDFW newscast from the early Fox era! I've also seen a couple of clips already available on YouTube (one of which was included in a compilation of the station's news opens I uploaded a couple years ago), and IMO, their 1995-97 graphics package was pretty slick and probably the best package that KDFW ever had.

  20. From what I can remember last time I was in Denison, Texas (my dad has an office down there), they pretty much just use "ABC Texoma" for everything else but the newscasts. They don't even put the station logo in the corner of the end of network promos.

  23. CNN does the same. Or, at least, they did for a while. Not sure if it happens there as often, still. This is a huge pet peeve of mine. The same is true on GMA, too.

  24. The jingle on the KGMC station ID was JAM's "The Spirit of New England" jingle package, one of my favorites. It likely dates back to 1995, when KGMC was Fresno's first WB affiliate, airing about 8-10 hours of barter shows programmed from KMPH, and brokered religious programming and infomercials during the rest of the day. By the time this video was recorded, KMPH had moved C43's entertainment shows and WB affiliation to KNSO 51 in Merced, where it remained until New Years Day 2001, when it swapped affiliations with Telemundo affiliate KMSG 59 in Sanger (which became KFRE, which it still is today as the market's CW affiliate). Judging by this video, I can assume that KJEO likely bought time on KGMC to air time-shifted rebroadcasts of its newscasts.
