1. Anyone think it’s somewhat cruel to have Ayman and Yasmin anchor so late in the day around the time they typically are getting ready for bed?
2. Oh I caught this gem on the Today Show this morning. Not quite up there of President Trump speaking with the President of the Virgin Islands of gaffes but still a big one.
3. What kind of helicopter does WISN have? In a recent article it appears they have an R44 registered to MetroNetworks while some recent YouTube videos have a Bell JetRanger 206B registered to Helicopters Inc. Here’s an image from OnMilwaulkee: And here’s one of many videos of the Bell 206 lifting off on WISN’s YouTube channel.
4. This is an odd header for WXII’s twitter account. If recall they have a newsroom set. Unless this was a “prototype”that was never used.
5. I believe they de Ignited them along with WJCL. There were many job postings related to technical directing posted soon after the acquisition.
6. Wouldn’t surprise me. I think I mentioned this but when WDSU got their new studio they got robotic cameras (before they had maybe one and the rest just had PTZ heads). WDSU didn’t get new robotic cameras rather they got the discontinued SP-2000s. It’s amazing how a company that seems to have a good reputation can be so cheap. I think there are still several that have yet to go HD. I was surprised that during the Hurricane Nate coverage WBAL took a shot from a WDSU skycam and it was in HD.
7. When did WVTM get the standard FX desk? Originally when they were bought by Hearst and got the Diagrid they had the desk seen in this video: Now they have the one that was standard during the FX set in a box era: I’m curious if this was a hand me down or if they ordered a desk from FX that hasn’t been made in ages.
8. Just saw this post. I imagine they are slowly renovating the building piece by piece. A video scaler or multiple viz engines for each wall?
9. Doonesbury mocked them back in 2015 for their over use of participles.
10. I remember reading a Broadcast Engineering (remember them?) article about the efforts to digitize WSB's library. I believe everything was donated but the digitizations of 40,000 hours was done by WSB. They even used software called Nexida Dialogue automatically generate the words to the video.
11. I like that too. But all that video is useless unless they have the correct data to catalog it. Hopefully those reels have some proper information on it otherwise it's useless. I doubt this non profit has the man power to watch all the video. Sounds like they have all the footage from the beginning but I wonder what's the cut off date?
12. I've noticed several comments in the chat box about the lack of crawl during Megyn Kelly Today. The ticker that's used during the regular Today Show is controlled and put on air by NBC. The affiliates get parameters and notices before hand where they have to upload the files to a device called the NameDropper HD. It does what it exactly says it handles the branding of the station from the top of the hour IDs to the Today Show time, temp and ticker. All of the Today's items are handled by this device. I don't think it's smart enough to handle two different types of graphics configurations. In the end it's a really simple graphics engine. In order for a headline to be displayed in the Today's ticker a producer would have to manually update a TXT file. Every new line of text instructs the device to insert the Today sunrise logo or a station logo. I think there is a plugin for ENPS and iNews so it could be updates from that app, which automatically updates the file. In order for the ticker, time and temp to be displayed it has to be triggered by someone in the Today control room or NBC's master control. Edit: I almost think the tickers triggered by someone in master control as there's sometimes a delay between the background disappearing and the text disappearing. CBS also uses the same hardware under their own name called LIDIA.
13. Here's a Baltimore Sun article about the effort of one woman to digitize the WJZ library. She made a pitch to the station that she'd digitize them if they give her the licensing rights.
14. If they want to do a more laid back newscast (maybe tieless) for Friday's fine. But not with any of these formats. Keep it the same but maybe a little "looser" with music perhaps?
15. Depends. Was there local time / temp / crawl on Sunday Today? Usually when the network doesn't trigger it at all it's a signal there's changes afloat. If they wanted to do specialized graphics but keep the ticker they could just go the Rio 2016 route. But from what I've heard it seems like it's going to be it's own show and nothing like current Today that just happens to have Today in the title and logo. Today could be in the name for contractual reasons with the affiliates or to establish continuity through 11AM. At the same time it will be interesting in how NBC is setting up the show to be Nielsen rated. I believe the prior block constituted Today but was broken down to three sub segments TODAY or TDY 1 (7-9AM), TODAY 2 (9-10AM) and TODAY 3 (10-11AM).
16. Are the journalists in the LA stations unioned? I imagine a lot of technical stuff still is. I believe the only on air union shops in Baltimore are WMAR and WBAL. Likewise I think they are on the production/engineering side as well.
17. According to Chase's website he works at Hulu helping with documentarys, producing and working the red carpet as a correspondent. He also works as an "internal journalist" interviewing Hulus employees.
18. Had no idea Daily Mail TV is coming from WPIX's set.
19. Not worth warranting a new thread but I'm wondering about the ram boards - the brown paper placed on the finished floor during studio remodels. I've seen in many time lapse videos that once it's laid down it appears that the ramboards remain under the permanent set structures. So are they removed underneath someway or does it remain underneath and the protection remains underneath?
20. Everybody has their bad days and hopefully it's not a habit. But imagine if someone other than the host did this they'd be fired. This comes on the day I just rewatched the three week highlight reel of Laura Ingrahams tenure hosting Just In. Also, it sounded like he was complaining that a guests video was put into the prompter. Is this a normal thing the networks do? I assume the reason is so during split screens the presenters looking straight into the camera.
21. Finally caught WMAR's Midday Maryland. The show seems to have pretaped segments. The show starts with the hosts, Elsa M. And Wyatt Everhart, each sitting either side of a TV monitor - ones a single chair and the others a love seat as the "hard set" of a virtual set. They introduce the lineup, opening credits start and the hosts are apart for the rest of the show. The first segment was done by Elsa and was a paid spot by Saiontz & Kirk (a Baltimore and DC law firm that advertises heavily) giving general legal advice - there were no "submitted questions" and will be a Tuesday feature. Right after that they cut to break and there was a recorded weathercast. The B block was about back to school and they talked to high school seniors from the Indian Creek School singing praises - complete with a slideshow. I initially thought this was a paid promotion but it wasn't based on how Wyatt and the kids sung the praises given how this is when parents start looking for schools for next year. I also thought the C block was promotiom. It was on the kitchen set where Wyatt interviewed the general manager and the head who made their specialty drinks (but no ingredients or instructions). The D block was done in a portion of WMAR's old set that it appears that they salvaged Elsa was interviewing a musician from the area and has been touring the world the past year. The closing had both hosts sitting in their virtual domain.

In Memoriam

Sad news out of Albuquerque, New Mexico KQRE's pilot, Bob Martin, died in a helicopter crash this past Sunday. Bob was flying the stations owned helicopter Saturday afternoon. Bob has been a reporter both in the air and on the ground for over 40 years and covered all the major events in Albuquerque. It is not clear what caused the crash but the National Transportation Safety Board is investigating.
23. I don't know but the set looks like a smaller version. The CBS set is a Jack Morton job and probably has exclusivity in the US and Canada. I doubt they do work in the Caucasus region so it's a pretty good rip off. But let's be real would CBS spend the time and money suing a small station for ripping off their look?
24. So apparently one network in the country of Georgia, Imedi, copied the CBS TM set design (or used the same designer). Via TVForum poster huszar.
25. I was wondering how they will handle it. I know the local news avails are gone but in my mind it doesn't make sense for the ticker to disappear for an hour. I wonder if they will do something like they did during Rio with the altered graphics using a different "ticker background". The affiliates had nothing to do on their end as the time/temp and crawl remained in the same spot.
