Your right about the camera operator - I thought there were atleast two. Looking more clearly it looks like there's one plus a floor manager standing between them. I guesstimated the age based on the time they went HD. But I imagine replacing a component in a box camera (as Sony calls them even though ABC I think went with Ikegami) is a lot easier than in a portable handled style and the actual small box cameras WPVI uses now.

Sarah Caldwell signed off as traffic and news anchor today at WBAL. She's staying in the region but got a job at the Institute of Notre Dame (a girls catholic prep school) as the Director of Development. https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=1573113192707003 Edit: Appears WBAL hasn't filled the traffic reporter and anchor position AND they are looking for a meteorologist. I don't know if they are looking to add to their weather team or if someone's leaning.

Those cameras have to be atleast 11 years old. What's the average life span? Regarding the operators do you think the show could be done with one camera operator there? Where one moves to the needed camera for the zooms and occasional pan?

Well Dave moved to Rehoboth so he's not on the up and up of DC TV as he used to be. Almost impossible to get a signal of any NBC affiliate besides LP WRDE. As for cable in the past it was a three way race for which NBC you got WBAL, WRC or WCAU.

WBAL is loosing longtime traffic and noon news anchor Sarah Caldwell who after 15 years has her last day this coming Friday. She posts that she'll remain in Baltimore but doesn't mention any future plans. Now I wonder if she may be crossing the street or hopping the fence over to WJZ now that Marcus Washington is heading to KNTV. Anchoring the weekend evening news would be a big step up.

There was a pretty big screw up of the first repeat of the Wednesday June 15 episode The Rachel Maddow show. Apparently the repeat that went out at 12AM ET Thursday/ 9PM PT Wednesday aired the wrong A block. According to TVNewser it appeared that they played out the episode from May 15. Apparently master control immediately noticed the mistake but waited for the first break in the program to fix it..

WBAL sounds different.

Ah since his Instagram is public it's Marcus Washington. Last day at WJZ is July 8 and first day at KNTV is July 24. Sam Brock is their male anchor in that hour.

Here's a brief article that has a quick blurb at how TEGNA stations are replacing some of their first generation HD cameras and fully robotics pedestals with PTZ cameras.- 3684 replies

Also in WJZ news they are loosing an anchor who has been with them for a few years. Said anchor is heading to KNTV for an AM and Mid Day anchoring position. You can probably figure out who but since this was only posted on a Instagram I'll wait. Also: Maybe it's just me but Baltimore seems like a market where people are more willing to stay in once they settle down roots (get married, having a family). If your young and single you'll likely move up the ranks.

WEAR' Meteorologist Meg McNamara is now on air at WJZ.

OJ Tropicana I mean Omar Jimenez of WBAL has released a music video entitled Ready For It. Features him in and around a live truck at various locations looking to go live. Unsurprisingly it looks like they either hid the logos or used an unmarked WBAL truck.

As you know I'm a big fan of BriWi but I love that the shows on at 11PM. It's a great alternative to the other networks that are in reruns and beats Don Lemon. I think the show needs to stay put because it's a great place to get immediate analysis from news articles that just went online for the next day's print addition. Additionally they seem to have gotten contributor contracts of many of the people breaking the news. As for Lawrence I don't know how to describe it but while his show is undoubtedly liberal and opinion focused there is something else that only he can bring to the table. Maybe it's the fact that he was a congressional aide and then senior advisor role to the late Senator Patrick Moynihan. Later he served as staff director for two different Senate committees the first being the Committee on Enviroment and Public Work and later the committee Committee on Finance. With that type of expierience he knows what he's talking about rather than many of the other opinion hosts on MSNBC and other networks. Then he has some show biz expierience writing sixteen episodes of The West Wing, either produced or co produced 23 episodes, consulted on 44 episodes, the executive producer for 22 and won an Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series. Finally he can frequently get his point across eloquently without resorting to the average cable news tactics. And yet we haven't heard from Lawrence O'Donnell and there are five days to go. Maybe with Phil sticking around Lawrence will stay as the show launched under his watch.

I don't think CNN would license their graphics package in an area that they cover and the channel is available widely. Actually no, they wouldn't license the package at all as it's a worldwide brand and available almost everywhere. They wouldn't want to dilute the coverage or make it look like a channel is affiliated with them. I do believe CNN does license individual illustrations and animations.

I've only seen that on one or two promos here in Baltimore. The way they had the anchor name uptop looked a bit unique. Is this a possible lower third or just a new template? I know Hearst has embedded the triangles and diagrid on sets, helicopters and live trucks. It should be interesting if they include the triangles when they do an update or launch a new package.

Michael Murphy who was a backup pilot for SkyForce 10 died in a helicopter crash near New Castle Airport in Delaware on Thursday. The helicopter landed in a drainage ditch at Route 13 and Frenchtown Road short of the runway. The helicopter was a twin engine Eurocopter and Michael was conducting Approach Training after departing in from Atlantic City. Michael was the only person on board the medical helicopter operated by Metro Aviation. Metro Aviation was the operator of PennStar which supplied medical helicopter services for the University of Pennsylvania Medical System. Michael Murphy was 37 years old. My condolences go out to his family, friends and colleagues.

I'm speculating here but Lawrence O'Donnell missed The Last Word three days this week. The first was on Monday where he was in Boston taping an interview with Senator Elizabeth Warren but was bumped for the Manchester Bombing breaking news. The interview played out on Tuesday with him hosting from Boston. On Wednesday they had Ari Melber fill in and Thursday Joy Reid filled in. He tweeted that he was in Boston covering the Harvard Graduaton and Zuckerbergs speech: And this Friday night he is broadcasting from Boston. He also missed other days during May sweeps with Joy and Ari as his primary fill in. This seems highly unusual for someone with a contract expiring on June 4. Could this be a power play by Lawrence to show the MSNBC executives how his absences affect ratings? Or could this be MSNBC testing the waters to see if the ratings hold for Ari and Joy to see if the show could survive without Lawrence?

Maybe NewsBlues got their A's mixed up and mean an N. It doesn't make sense to piss off your stronger affiliate group and a partner in TWO joint ventures (ESPN & A&E). Unless of course Hearst is leaving the JV. But for both they seem to be the silent partner and watch the cash come in.

I see. It appears that in 2009 the refreshes coincided with more stations going to HD and they seemed to be standardized for the most part. The tickers, lower thirds, and the full screen graphics templates appear to be the same (or extremely similar - guess equipment wasn't as standardized then). The openings and the full screen backgrounds appear to be where they differed.
-
Don't quote me on this but I think certain elements may have been syndicated. Is this what you mean by the ring open? Also, it's worth checking out this website Television by Design. They made the Hearst package along with many others during the 90s and early 2000s.

I'm slightly confused are they in a "temporary set" in their previous studio or in the other studio?
-
I didn't know there were any still. I knew there were some during the Live Well era. I figure if they are moving a temp set in the studio it must not be used that much and able to get a fresh build.
-
It was briefly mentioned in another thread. Apparently its buggy and when it crashes they're SOL.
-
Their two studios are the same size. Why would they go through the effort to move existing elements of the old set in the old studio into an empty studio across the hall? Would be a lot easier if they built the set in the empty studio.
