1. NBC Sports Boston has suspended radio host Michael Felger for insensitive comments he made in the aftermath of Roy Halladay’s tragic death and towards Dale Earnhardt . He will not appear on the station through Sunday. His radio show was simulcast on the regional sports net. NBC Sports Boston has reiterated that although they simulcast the show they have no editorial control over it.
2. Looks like First Look as been officially extended to a 4AM start time.
3. I think I remember @Weeters posting a link either in here or in the shoutbox. The link was from one of those old broadcast engineering magazines that were manually scanned. The magazine discussed the different types of construction of the studios and facilities. The magazine had pieces about WPVI and I believe WCAU. It also had stuff about WBAL and WMAR (where I learned that the dome on their building is a raydome)

5. WBAL-AM apparently is going to buy a low power station to act as a translator. It’s 101.5 and currentlymowned by New Hope Church in New Jersey. https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=1514476765285515
6. Maybe they’ll fix their PSIPs. CBS is channel 16 (their virtual channel) and their Fox subchannel is on 21 (their physical channel).
7. Anyone think it’s somewhat cruel to have Ayman and Yasmin anchor so late in the day around the time they typically are getting ready for bed?
8. Oh I caught this gem on the Today Show this morning. Not quite up there of President Trump speaking with the President of the Virgin Islands of gaffes but still a big one.
9. What kind of helicopter does WISN have? In a recent article it appears they have an R44 registered to MetroNetworks while some recent YouTube videos have a Bell JetRanger 206B registered to Helicopters Inc. Here’s an image from OnMilwaulkee: And here’s one of many videos of the Bell 206 lifting off on WISN’s YouTube channel.
10. This is an odd header for WXII’s twitter account. If recall they have a newsroom set. Unless this was a “prototype”that was never used.
11. I believe they de Ignited them along with WJCL. There were many job postings related to technical directing posted soon after the acquisition.
12. Wouldn’t surprise me. I think I mentioned this but when WDSU got their new studio they got robotic cameras (before they had maybe one and the rest just had PTZ heads). WDSU didn’t get new robotic cameras rather they got the discontinued SP-2000s. It’s amazing how a company that seems to have a good reputation can be so cheap. I think there are still several that have yet to go HD. I was surprised that during the Hurricane Nate coverage WBAL took a shot from a WDSU skycam and it was in HD.
13. When did WVTM get the standard FX desk? Originally when they were bought by Hearst and got the Diagrid they had the desk seen in this video: Now they have the one that was standard during the FX set in a box era: I’m curious if this was a hand me down or if they ordered a desk from FX that hasn’t been made in ages.
14. Just saw this post. I imagine they are slowly renovating the building piece by piece. A video scaler or multiple viz engines for each wall?
15. Doonesbury mocked them back in 2015 for their over use of participles.
16. I remember reading a Broadcast Engineering (remember them?) article about the efforts to digitize WSB's library. I believe everything was donated but the digitizations of 40,000 hours was done by WSB. They even used software called Nexida Dialogue automatically generate the words to the video.
17. I like that too. But all that video is useless unless they have the correct data to catalog it. Hopefully those reels have some proper information on it otherwise it's useless. I doubt this non profit has the man power to watch all the video. Sounds like they have all the footage from the beginning but I wonder what's the cut off date?
18. I've noticed several comments in the chat box about the lack of crawl during Megyn Kelly Today. The ticker that's used during the regular Today Show is controlled and put on air by NBC. The affiliates get parameters and notices before hand where they have to upload the files to a device called the NameDropper HD. It does what it exactly says it handles the branding of the station from the top of the hour IDs to the Today Show time, temp and ticker. All of the Today's items are handled by this device. I don't think it's smart enough to handle two different types of graphics configurations. In the end it's a really simple graphics engine. In order for a headline to be displayed in the Today's ticker a producer would have to manually update a TXT file. Every new line of text instructs the device to insert the Today sunrise logo or a station logo. I think there is a plugin for ENPS and iNews so it could be updates from that app, which automatically updates the file. In order for the ticker, time and temp to be displayed it has to be triggered by someone in the Today control room or NBC's master control. Edit: I almost think the tickers triggered by someone in master control as there's sometimes a delay between the background disappearing and the text disappearing. CBS also uses the same hardware under their own name called LIDIA.
19. Here's a Baltimore Sun article about the effort of one woman to digitize the WJZ library. She made a pitch to the station that she'd digitize them if they give her the licensing rights.
20. If they want to do a more laid back newscast (maybe tieless) for Friday's fine. But not with any of these formats. Keep it the same but maybe a little "looser" with music perhaps?
21. Depends. Was there local time / temp / crawl on Sunday Today? Usually when the network doesn't trigger it at all it's a signal there's changes afloat. If they wanted to do specialized graphics but keep the ticker they could just go the Rio 2016 route. But from what I've heard it seems like it's going to be it's own show and nothing like current Today that just happens to have Today in the title and logo. Today could be in the name for contractual reasons with the affiliates or to establish continuity through 11AM. At the same time it will be interesting in how NBC is setting up the show to be Nielsen rated. I believe the prior block constituted Today but was broken down to three sub segments TODAY or TDY 1 (7-9AM), TODAY 2 (9-10AM) and TODAY 3 (10-11AM).
22. Are the journalists in the LA stations unioned? I imagine a lot of technical stuff still is. I believe the only on air union shops in Baltimore are WMAR and WBAL. Likewise I think they are on the production/engineering side as well.
23. According to Chase's website he works at Hulu helping with documentarys, producing and working the red carpet as a correspondent. He also works as an "internal journalist" interviewing Hulus employees.
24. Had no idea Daily Mail TV is coming from WPIX's set.
25. Not worth warranting a new thread but I'm wondering about the ram boards - the brown paper placed on the finished floor during studio remodels. I've seen in many time lapse videos that once it's laid down it appears that the ramboards remain under the permanent set structures. So are they removed underneath someway or does it remain underneath and the protection remains underneath?
