  1. What happens though when Sinclair takes over 8? How would 5 and even 19 do when that happens?

If the Sinclair/Tribune deal doesn't go through than it a great day in America. However, if it does goes through SMH-Hmmm. Sinclair has gobbled up many other broadcast groups, so them getting #1 stations in many markets are sitting them pretty i.e. Cincinnati/WKRC, SLC/KUTV.

Management at SLC/KUTV had gone on the record saying that Sinclair execs told them; Whatever you're doing continue to keep doing it, and we'll support you yadda, yadda, yadda. I think in FOX 8 case not much changes will come down the pike. I do wonder if Gabe Spiegel will have a job he did work at WSYX in Columbus.

(I hope he jumps to WKYC if that be the case.)

Scripps has dogged out it two big legacy stations WEWS & WXYZ both are a shell of its former self. That WEWS logo alone makes them look like market 204. Scripps probably wants to sell there been some talk on other sites, but nothing written in stone. I think they're clueless at Scripps. 5 will continue to sink and change personalities, management. 19 will do the same, but 19 product will continue to outshine 5; which is sad. That like WGCL picking themselves up and over powering WSB in Atlanta.

  2. I wouldn't be surprised if a new "The Now" on WEWS gets moved to 7pm, with the old "Now" becoming "News 5 at 4" in order to take on "Fox 8 News at 4" and "Snoozefest 19 at 4*"

*Out of respect for the City of Cleveland and due to the fact that WOIO's newscasts are boring as s*it these days, from henceforth I suggest we refer to WOIO's branding as "Snoozefest 19".

oooh not Snoozefest 19. Sad part is 19 starting to look better than 5 in news coverage. WEWS has gone to the dogs, and it even sad when 19 starts to become the gold standard over 5. 8 continues to lead.

  3. The On Assignment newsmagazine had legs that NBC could work with. On Assignment on NBC did so much better then Megyn Kelly's newsmagazine. The problem is that NBC always wants to compete with 60 Minutes, they should give it up. There is only one 60 Minutes.

Greta is a weak broadcaster, she worked at Fox News cause she was not threatening and she had that twang which appealed to a certain audience.

She was placed in a bad time slot, the 6:00 time slot is the worse time slot in cable news. No show that is on the 6:00 hour does well on MSNBC. I am surprised Al Sharpton's show did as well as it did. Cable newsers are competing against evening news and evening news brings in millions of viewers a night. Greta had no chance and also she probably left cause she knew trouble was brewing with the scandals and she did not want to be a apart of it.

Maybe it was because her show sucked, and no thought or planning was involved in her show. It was like hey NBC has Greta, and we can just throw a show on and people will watch at 6 pm. I agree she was up against a lot of stiff competition, but her show sucked from day one it aired.

  4. Some updates from WGCL.

They have fired their chief meteorologist Jim Kosek http://www.ftvlive.com/sqsp-test/2017/6/25/atlanta-weatherman-bounced

they have also fired a Managing Editor, Producer, and operations manager http://www.ftvlive.com/sqsp-test/2017/6/23/more-sacked-at-troubled-meredith-station

rumor is that current anchor Sharron Reid is pushing management to hire former WOIO News Director Doerr to be the new News Director at WGCL. Doerr, along with GM Bill Applegate, helped transform WOIO into a competitor in Cleveland (only for Raycom to dismantle everything for no real reason). Doerr and Reid have a history, Reid worked at WOIO under Doerr and he encouraged her to take part in a nude photo shoot for a story. http://www.ftvlive.com/sqsp-test/2017/6/28/someone-knocking-at-the-doerr-in-atlanta

Yeah, Doerr could do wonders at GCL even Bill Applegate get him out of retirement.

  5. Was watching WRC yesterday and noticed Chris Lawrence was anchoring at midday, but Leon Harris was anchoring at 4pm (which he has done on other days). I didn't think anything of it until I went to read their bios and saw that Leon Harris is listed as the anchor of News 4 at 4. Chris's bio lists him as an anchor and as reporting from the Live Desk. When did this happen, and how did nobody notice? Even Dave Hughes over at DCRTV hasn't commented. He also missed the fact that Barbara Harrison was missing from the midday show for weeks. She has transitioned to a special assignments reporter, but coincidentally co-anchored the midday news today for the first time since she went missing months ago (appears she is here today because it is Tom Kierein's last day - Pat Collins and Bob Ryan also made guest appearances, as well as Joe Krebs via the phone - did not know that Pat Lawson-Muse started on the midday show with Barbara and Tom).

Pat Lawson-Muse is not anchoring the 4pm? I always think WRC has been making slow changes, and it does seem they're setting the stage with the next generation. There's anchor bench on Channel 4 where they have many iconic anchors.

    ANOTHER BOSTON POWER PLAY?

    wbpx-hq-185.jpg

An anonymous tipster reports that Ion Media has agreed to sellWBPX-32 in Boston (Market #9) to the ABC Owned Television Stations Group in a deal that could lead to Hearst's WCVB-5-ABC in Boston, and Hearst's WMUR-9-ABC in Manchester, NH, eventually losing their ABC affiliation.

WBPX is simulcast on two full-power satellites: WPXG-TV(virtual channel 21, digital channel 33) in Concord, New Hampshire and WDPX-TV (virtual channel 58, digital channel 40) in Vineyard Haven, Massachusetts; and two low-power translator stations: WMPX-LP (channel 33) and W40BO in Boston.

WDPX, the Martha's Vineyard-based repeater of WBPX, was sold at the recent FCC auction for $43.5 million.

    abc.jpg

According to the tipster, ABC hopes to take over the Ion stations in September. "ABC is expected to sign a purchase agreement for a studio/office complex in suburban Boston within a day or two and will immediately start work to convert it into offices, a newsroom/studio, and a second studio for other local programs and commercials, as well as hiring a full staff, including a news staff of 80-90 persons."

If true, the ABC scenario would echo NBC's recent power play in Boston in which Sunbeam's WHDH-7 was stripped of its network affiliation. We have been unable to confirm the anonymous report.

  7. Not to be critical, but many of these have been previously posted. (the Cincinnati stuff)

You do realize you have to go back so far, and there a few WCPO/WLWT that were posted on youtube this year. Most of the time I don't go all the way back or have the time to check every selection out.

Newsblues.com has a new owner; Rick Iler former news director at KSHB, KARK and slew of other stations. Here's the article from newsblues.com

    NewsBlues has a new owner.

Rick Iler, the former news director at Scripps-owned KSHB-41-NBC in Kansas City (Market #33), Nexstar's KARK-4-NBC in Little Rock (Market #57), Gannett's KCEN-6-NBC in Temple, TX (Market #87), and Nexstar's KSNF-16-NBC in Joplin, MO (Market #151), has acquired the legacy TV news insider website NewsBlues.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed (because it's none of your damn business), but I can tell you (and this is just between us) it was more than an 18-pack of Busch Light and less than a 2007 Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano.

"This is really a dream come true for me," said Iler. "NewsBlues has been a staple of broadcast news for nearly 20 years and I have been reading it since the beginning. Having the opportunity to continue a great media broadcast tradition is an honor."

Iler says his vision for the future is to refresh the site while staying true to its iconic, subversive brand. "I am very excited for some of the changes people will see in the near future with NewsBlues. It will have some of the old mixed in with a new aggressive look, style and feel. I think people are going to love it."

    beer-ferrari.jpg

For the immediate future, your Surly Editor® will continue to write and produce the daily newsletter through Friday, May 26, at which point Ilerand his staff will take over production. Initially, the website will remain pretty much the same...sort of a NewsBlues Lite. But, later this summer, the website's look and feel will change dramatically. There are big things ahead.

What does this mean for you? Your current NewsBlues membership will remain in place, and we will soon begin selling extended memberships again of 3-and-6 months. The valuable SourceBook will continue.

Mrs. B's Grammar Yammer will live on in re-runs.

Personally, I look forward to working with Rick and his crew and will continue in an advisory role for the foreseeable future. Good things are ahead. Stay tuned. (You can reach out to Iler at [email protected].)

  9. I think Raycom might buy Meredith and revamp WGCL, but then I think "Atlanta 46".

Please God, no more renaming the station brand identity. How many more times can this station changes its name? From CBS 46 to CBS Atlanta to CBS 46 and so on. Just leave it as CBS46.

Raycom & WGCL eh no maybe Raycom should see if it can get a Mobile, Ala station instead. I'm just sayin'.
