1. It's the end of a news department as KMCC Las Vegas cuts its local news.

The MundoMax affiliate had launched local news in April of last year. An email obtained by Media Moves says the decision was made due to "business conditions". It had been struggling to compete, but what foothold it was gaining in the market was wiped out by the name change, cancellation of national news and unpopular programming.

Some 20 jobs have been axed.

I guess those political ad dollars won't trickle down that deep in Vegas.

Or will all the political ads be in the novellas?

2. The Retirement Holiday Rush. Welcome to the after sweeps party! But in all seriousness, well done to him. I hope he gets to enjoy his retirement very well.

This means he will spend the rest of his life cursing at the tv news and drunk dialing the assignment desk, and other stations assignment desk.

Retirement gets easier after you destroy those first few tv's in a drunken and pill fueled rage.

Welcome to the real 'otherside'.

3.

This is who WTVT has lost in the past year:

• Anne Dwyer (this past Summer, June 18th, 2014)
• John Wilson (the day before Thanksgiving last year)
• Denise White (the day before Thanksgiving this year)

Man, WTVT 13 is losing some very good people. And I love WTVT 13. Very sad that she's leaving. I'll miss her there. But now, who will replace her?

Thanksgiving will never be the same.

4. The Social Media on the revamped show amounted to 1 hit during the 6am hour. It's not so much telling as it is reverting to normal... WXYZ doesn't really push social media on the air outside of The NOW...

You guys are lucky then. Scripps is ramming it down our throats everyplace else.

5. The show is likely being converted back to a traditional 2 anchors with Weather and Traffic together format after having been expanded in April to include a live center and social media component... That conversion effort fell very very flat...

I'll upload the full promo later...

Interesting that Scripps may dial back on the SM / Live center portions of that show. They are pushing the hell out of SM in every market...and to revert back to more 'traditional" show may be a bit telling.

KPIX/KBCW San Francisco has been running a sm heavy 10pm called "Nightbeat" after about a year it's been a giant flop.

Is the social media thing working anywhere on tv news?

Can the success of sm formats be based on regional, age or even racial/cultural preferences and incomes?

If WXYZ swings back to traditional...and they get a ratings bump...will it be a reality check?

6. Anybody want a bowl of Scripps brand cereal? This is from WXYZ's brand new morning promo. The show is likely being converted back to a traditional 2 anchors with Weather and Traffic together format after having been expanded in April to include a live center and social media component... That conversion effort fell very very flat...

I'll upload the full promo later...

The problem was the show was too high in fiber...

It gave everyone the shits.

That box is priceless!

7. Is it really an exclusive interview when your step mother, who is on leave after being mentioned in a federal indictment of her husband, works at the TV station? WCAU billed an interview with Chaka Fattah Jr an exclusive hours after he was found guilty of 22 out of 23 federal counts of tax and bank fraud.

She put the kid up as a sacrifice in an effort to keep her job. Does this entire family not have lawyers???

Ever since the indictments on her hubby and the step sons troubles ,she has been making statements to the media. So far she is skating...but keep yer mouth shut lady before you become a "named co-conspirator".

8. Interesting, thanks for the story. Personally, I thought it was stupid when they first started using it. Now with "Stories that matter", well that's even worse than "San Diego's News Source", But not as bad as the ND's haircut, LOL...

Just don't say anything bad about cats when talking to ND Tiffany.

9. So KGTV has done away with "San Diego's News Source" opting for the tag line of "Stories that matter". So that means that they had to modify the opens to get ride of "San Diego's News Source" and as you can imagine, it sucks..

Ownership of "San Diegos News Source" is in question...

Before Paul Anedregg(Breaking News Crapper) was hired he was using www.sandiegonewssource.com... He took that because of ownership issues with his last domain www.citibeatnews.com. The folks that run citibeat magazines nationwide were miffed. So Paul gets hired by KGTV only to rent or transfer the domain to another junior news ranger named Anthony...well Anthony was not happy with the arrangement with Paul so Anthony bolted from that site over to onscene.tv so he could pay less in stringer fees.

The domain went dark a few months ago...but got jump started and paid up this last month. I think he had to buy it back from a squatter.

Now that KGTV abandon it I guess nobody may really care. I bet it's never even been registered anywhere for any reason.

10. So KGTV has done away with "San Diego's News Source" opting for the tag line of "Stories that matter". So that means that they had to modify the opens to get ride of "San Diego's News Source" and as you can imagine, it sucks. Also, they're using a new music cut for the top/bottom of the hour preview-- it's not bad, per se but it has this urgency to it that seems out of place for the AM newscasts.

And.... Can't forget that for sweeps, KGTV is offering $500 for watching ABC's Thursday night primetime! ahh sweeps desperation at it's finest...

The desperation gets worse as they are offering only $100 to watch the morning show. One promo says it's really a "gift card"....but Cha Cha Cimigunga says it's cash.

Hell we have local radio stations giving away $1000 every morning.

But yup...

The ultimate proof your product sucks is to give away money during sweeps.

11. Team-10 would get lost and be late after reading the ticker.

Hey rkolsen...

The wx, stocks, and news are all fine on the tickers here also...

just the traffic....so far in San Diego on 3 different stations now.

Now Maryland???

Are you telling me that you and I are the only people actually reading the tickers ???

I wonder if it's a secret coded communication stream used by the feds to talk to the space people.

12. Also you can add WMAR to the outdated traffic ticker list. Weather seems to be on point.

Amazing...

Does it show San Diego road conditions also???

I wonder if these tickers are locked in some kind of "test"

mode.

Or they lost the instruction book at Scripps Corporate.

13. Yeah, they do the plug during the 11pm newscast here as well. I just found it odd that they would have to constantly need to plug JK's show and retweet it several times on the main KGTV twitter.

There is some form of compensation for the plugs. There can be givebacks of time, special access, promos and visits. These little things are part of affiliate agreements as various "riders". As an affiliate you want little cool stuff...and the net wants your local promo tie-in.

Everyone is supposed to be one big happy tv family. You want to push the viewer into the next hour anyway and it belongs to the network.

Besides, if your station plays ball with the network, you might get Rosie from The View to fly out and stand next to your anchors in the May promo's. She may even do a little dance with them.

14. Hmmm, let's see... There's:

Whitney Southwick

Mark Mathis

Craig Herrera

Greg Bledsoe

Matt Baylow

Shawn Styles

Dave Scott

Brad Wills

I want to say Dave Scott? And if I may ask, why "chaps?"

Because except for those chaps he was buck naked.

Palm Springs is not FAR enough from SD to NOT be noticed.

15. The 4pm offerings in this market are pitiful. KGTV's product blows, KNSD is stale, XETV...Who? and KSWB, meh. Makes me miss the old days of News 8/Local 8 News at 4pm. At least Beth Shelburne and Kathleen Bade made me stick around.

Who's Miss Piggy? Monica Dean?

And that;'s one of the G-rated code names...

Bet you can't guess which weatherman got the name "Chaps"....

16. I stopped watching last week. Terrible show. Ariel looks like he's about to fall asleep at any moment, and Anne seems lost. Angelica looks like she doesn't want to be there. Have you noticed that they're doing more walking around the set/ standing up during the other newscasts? This new ND is really sinking their product even more.

I swear the only place they have not tried as a stand up spot is the restrooms and cafeteria. At any second I expect Anne to wander out on to highway 94 only to be run over by the braking news crapper. I actually found myself watching Miss Piggy and the 4pm NBC7 offering just so I could "come down".

KGTV needs to spend the money for a Steadicam Jr, and a real trained operator like KSWB did.

17. The Now...San Diego.

It's completely unwatchable for me.

Reminds me of ping pong balls on crack. Missed cues, tech glitches everywhere, and very confused and flustered reporters.

We are supposed to be "inviting these people into our homes"???

Well get me a tranqulizer gun for Ann State so I can shoot a tranq into that booty.

18. To be fair Natasha also got married and 3 boys came with the new husband...so she has her hands full for the foreseeable next 18 years.

Now Kimi being out and sick....

Say it ain't so!

19. The traffic ticker at both stations in question is generated by Newsroom Solutions hardware and fetches data from various sources on the web, either public data or from a subscription service. The station can't fix it themselves afaik, they have to get Newsroom Solutions to fix it.

I guess it's easier to run bogus info then to ask "newsroom solutions" to fix the problem.

How many other markets are repeating the same bad info across the country?

20. I see. I still remember when Austell was doing traffic for 8 how they would do more "community involvement" with the chopper. It's been downhill ever since. I get it's a big expense, but if you're going to boast about being the "only chopper" in town, then they need to do a better job. I remember when you mentioned several months ago that Chopper 8/pilot wasn't available to cover the story involving the two elderly people who got lost leaving a casino and ultimately were found stuck in a remote area of SD County. KFMB takes too many things for granted, and thus does not step up their game. The irony is that their best days of covering news was in the mid to late 90s when they weren't #1 in ratings.

KFMB was late in the chopper game. Sky 10 debuted in 1976 or so and KCST launched in 1979 . There used to be a 100 foot tall water tower where the 52 and 163 now meet. On top of that tower someone spray painted "news 8 sucks 9-1-79", so only the choppers and aircraft from Miramar could see.

KFMB wanted so bad to be in the airborn news game that they made a promo campaign for both TV and newspaper ads that included this shot.

Who's helo is this????

It's a Bell 47 from "Joes Whirlybird Rentals" They never mention it in the promo....it's just there like a big pink kitty.

I actually think they stole it from in front of the supermarket after kicking a few kiddies off the ride.754567518_News8Chopper.jpg.b3d7adf7b29b9e74b024b62e76a05d79.jpg
