Rare clip, Today Show outdoors (1972) featuring Frank McGee and Barbara Walters

I understand on the surface level why Nexstar implemented the delay: forcing viewers to watch newscasts live. But that only works if the competition does the same. If I can't stream my local Nexstar station online, what stops me from turning into my local Hearst or Sinclair station which does? There's also less incentive to watch a newscast live If stories are clipped and uploaded to various platforms shortly after being aired. (Granted a station still benefits from impressions to their website for ad revenue) but still less incentive for live viewership.

Thanks. Meant to say Fallon but had Kimmel in my mind.

Not sure but I'm excited to see what they come up with. There are mid market stations with better sets, lighting and camera quality than WABC. Time for some change.

Christine anchored on TV as well as streaming, and it appears it was from the regular CBS studio. But when she anchored it was about 9:00 p.m. Eastern so she probably had time to go to the WCBS studio. -
Good points, but i think all of American media today is a rat race to cover the same thing. CBS's attitude might be, we haven't won trying to keep up with everyone else, they can get that elsewhere, lets be different. To your point I do wonder if viewers will feel like they're missing out when watching this and turn to NBC/ABC to see what happened with say RFK Jr .

To the previous questions about how will the dual anchor pairing handle breaking news, we did not get that answer tonight. Kristine Johnson anchored coverage of the mid air collision in DC. Let's see if the new team will be on the ground tomorrow.

Someone had just brought up the Baltimore bridge collapsed to me, now this. This has not been a good year for aviation! WCBS' Kristine Johnson anchored CBS' coverage. NBC had a huge Chicago crossover going on tonight but even they interrupted limitedly, with the MSNBC bug on screen. Hallie Jackson earning her stripes again. Compared to the key bridge crash where DC stations were in Baltimore, I'm not really seeing Baltimore stations in DC for this event. -
I will say the YouTube comments have been a mixed bag of positive, missing Norah and complaining that the format is too slow. I also saw one or two complaints about having two men and "no women".

Looks like WNYW is Doing a (daily?) 3 p m online news update, this one was anchored by Linda Schmidt

I wouldn't mind if they did a singular tease for their lead. Something out of NBC's playbook... Critics are also chiming in, like us Variety magazine likened the show to PBS NewsHour https://variety.com/2025/tv/news/cbs-evening-news-format-change-john-dickerson-maurice-dubois-1236288061/

CBS is showing Hollywood Squares at 2 pm ET rather than The Price is Right. This fills the gap between The Talk's cancellation and Beyond the Gates' premier.

I don't know if this was already posted, but CBS is showing Hollywood Squares at 2 pm ET rather than The Price is Right. This fills the gap between The Talk's cancellation and Beyond the Gates' premier.

CBS has the strongest Evening News, Political Affairs, and morning shows and News Magazine journalistically speaking. I still don't understand why they/Paramount seem to be struggling much more than NBC and ABC. Hopefully people give this a chance.

@Geoffrey I think the two anchor format is just to be different from NBC & ABC. By God, this may be their best revamp since Bob Schiffer. Hopefully CBS stays the course. Loved the international coverage, more of that please Overall I think CBS shines when they do what they do best: hard documentary style/mature/intellectual reporting, not imitating the competition.

Observations from tonight, Not that you asked for it lol.... This was good. Slower paced, zero sensationalism, PBS quality. Definitely better than NBC and ABC journalistically speaking. 1. Love the return of the 1987 Rather theme. I would love to see the 1991 theme comeback but this is great 2. No headlines tease, straight into the broadcast. This is a nice contrast to the two minute headlines on WNT. 3. They seem to be going for a more discussion-based format because Maurice and John had an extended conversation with Margaret Brennan for their lead story. 4. The CBS EN logo is in the Upper third. European style. 5. Documentary style L3 6. No rapid flips between frames and images during packages like NNN, and WNT 7. No lower third graphic present during the entirety of the story 8. No use of "breaking news" at all 9. Slower paced than the competition, definitely has a 60 minutes feel to it. They did a news Roundup at the end of the A block to rapidly acknowledge the major stories in the world. 10. The set looks good. The lighting on the talent is to washed out though. If they dim the lighting like they did for Inside Edition interview it would look better.

Same as WPLG. Very plain and flat. The previous package's L3s looked better. Again, the flat trend is still going.

Dual anchoring would make the most sense as it would differentiate them from the other two evening news shows. IMO It gels better with audiences to consistently have those two faces there. Split anchoring to me gives a discombobulated feel, like NBC Nightly News when John Chancellor and Chet Huntley were doing it. This was a great way to preview the broadcast, this should have been done more in the last few months. I hope it's a dual anchor situation as well because again, that would differentiate it from the other networks. I'm curious to see how this goes because IIRC, nearly all multi anchor evening news arrangements since Huntley Brinkley didn't work. The exception being WNT in 1979.

As we further examine the decline television news, these two articles say that the days of the high paid television anchor are over. In in the storytellers thread on Facebook someone even suggested the days of the local anchor making over $100,000 a year are done. The articles point to Hoda Kotb's departure from the Today Show after allegedly being asked to take a salary cut. They also point to Jimmy *Fallon cutting back to four new shows a week, and the removal of the 8G band from Late Night with Seth Meyers. https://variety.com/2024/tv/news/anchors-tv-news-stars-pay-cuts-exit-1236180206/ https://jacobsmedia.com/death-by-1000-salary-cuts/

CBS Newscasts arent exactly first place outside of 60 Mins and Sunday Morning. IMO expanding news output doesn't make sense for CBS. US broadcast television schedules are already saturated with local and national news. Yet another newscast would just be just more of the same: Trump, wildfires and the and the lastest mass shooting. CBS is going for a national/local synergy look. Im not opposed to a local set design for national if it still looks good I find the DC set pretty simple. Its just a room full of video walls, but it looked great once they darkened the graphics from light to navy blue for CBSEN.
-
Assuming they move the needle, I wonder what the breakup of their stable and flagship anchor team will mean for WCBS.
-
Snippets of the new set as the new duo was interviewed by Maurice's WCBS colleague Mary Calvi. I'm not seeing Deborah Norville on there as often these days. I'm really hoping the set lighting will look as dim on CBS's cameras because this looks great. I love the diverse landscapes in the background. It makes the broadcast seem more nationally oriented, and not just New York City/East Coast centric. It reminds me of Good Morning America's intro from the early Gibson/Sawyer era. In this era of washed out HD, dark lighting and warm colors look good.
