Media General, Young to merge

Just to drive people like you crazy, I would love to see David Smith figure out how to legally do a 20-opoly, buy up all the stations in San Francisco area, move them into the same building, and show the same news cast on all of them! Haters!

And you would love that. One Owner Rule. Similar to what politicians say "One Party Rule". In your imaginary world, you would love to see a market monopoly. Thank God the FCC is cracking down on that out-of-date UHF discount. Otherwise Sincrap would be a household name everywhere. I hope they don't raise the caps so those devils can continue to get bigger. And it wouldn't drive me crazy because it would never happen that way. But I get the feeling you love that Devil so much, you continue to mention him.

This thread is really starting to make my eyes bleed. Could everybody just PLEASE call it a night on this topic?

Nobody's winning this one right now.

Agreed -- especially now that H-B Lad has shown his true, trollish colors.

Devils. LOL! You haters kill me. How many TV stations do you own again?

Not to get too political here, but let me guess: You're a lefty. Lefties are always covetous of people who are succeessful. Instead of learning from the success stories of others lefties always want to bring successful people down to their level. Maybe there is a gem of wisdom there, maybe there isn't. But that's the way I see things.

By the way, I am a lawyer by day. And one of the things I do is set up entities for people. There are all kinds of things you can do with entities, and they are perfectly legal, In fact, entities were designed specifically for some of the things that Sinclair does with them in mind.

Let me give you one example where an entity is used in a way that is similar to how Sinclair is using them. An engineering firm has to be owned in many states by a licensed engineer. However, there are many engineering firms owned by unlicensed engineers. The way around that is to get a licensed engineer to serve as trustee of a trust that owns the unlicensed engineer's stock. That satisfies the legal requirement. Nothing wrong with this and things like this been done for over a hundred years.

CAN WE PLEASE GET BACK ON TOPIC? THIS THREAD IS ABOUT THE PROPOSED MERGER BETWEEN MEDIA GENERAL AND YOUNG BROADCASTING, NOT TO SPECULATE ABOUT TELEVISION STATIONS IN THE BAY AREA. I ASK THAT YOU ALL PLEASE GET BACK ON TOPIC. THANK YOU.

I strongly agree!! Most of the stuff we've been talking about on here is heavy speculation that MG might sell KRON and many who want NBC to move to KRON or Fox buying KRON, etc...

I do have a feeling that the MG/Young thing would probably be the first one to get the greenlight, before all the other major deals. Maybe a Tribune/Local TV be second, despite them edging over the cap. But that can easily be grandfathered, even after they sell/spin-off the papers.

I apologize, I fell for the troll.

But I agree, I don't think this one will take too long to get approved because I don't think that there are any conflicts in any market compared to some of the other larger deals. And considering that they sold WIAT in Birmingham when they acquired WVTM is probably a plus when the FCC looks at their application since it looks like MG doesn't play the "shell game".

Can the admins move select posts in a thread off to their own thread? That would be a really good thing to do here.

I'm sure we'll find out if anything's going to happen with KRON not long after the merger officially happens.

You know what I apologize too. Same here. Some folks love to make a boatload of noise. And while I'm not let anyone run me over like a dog, I think it's best to just ignore. And I haven't taken my own advice.

With that said, the FCC don't have to worry much. The sole complaint is by one. Free Press and ACA haven't even made their PODs on this deal.

I just have to respond to the bolded bullshit. On behalf of all lefties, please kindly shut up. You have no clue what you're talking about.

Thanks.

And with that, I will offer my prediction.

MediaGeneral will run KRON as is, with no real changes. Maybe invest some money into the news ops, disaffiliate from MyTV, and move to smaller, more reasonable studios. But those are no-brainers.

They will not offer up the station for sale. KRON will remain a MG station regardless of this or that.

Fox will still be on KTVU as an affiliate, and NBC will continue to call KNTV one of their own.

In other words, this thread was all much ado about nothing.

And now, Dish has submitted an objection to the merger, saying that Media General is attempting to extend its retransmission consent terms to the Young stations, which it says could be a violation of FCC rules since the merger hasn't been completed. But the FCC will probably throw this objection out, since it has been well more than 30 days since the applications were filed.

This is why I hate Dish. If they never came out with the Hopper, this retrans dispute would have never happened.

BTW, I'm sorry about my rant earlier. I just don't like seeing a war of words on a thread that I started.

I'm far from a "lefty," and that quote is embarrassing to read. There are no words.

Their retrans problems predate the Hopper by a number of years. Dish always seemed to get involved in retrans disputes a lot. Not only did they hit rough patches with WBRZ, Fisher and a bunch of other station groups, there were also indications that deals were inching toward their end and stations were being threatened.

It's as if Mark Hyman got an account on TVNewsTalk and posted on here. LOL

All I know is that I will never subscribe to Dish Network. It's one thing if you have disputes with broadcasters every now and then, but they seem to get into it more than even Time Warner Cable, and they're pretty bad it at.

Politics is stupid, but math isn't. It would behoove anybody interested in understanding what ails the middle class to spend time reading the first 10 or 12 pages of the blog I linked below. It explains precisely why this country is in deep doo-doo right now. This author claims there has been zero GDP growth in over 30 years.

I'm not saying this guy has all the answers, but from what I see a lot of it rings true. And it's neither left wing nor right wing the way I see it.

This is relevant stuff, by the way, being a TV News forum and all. You can't report politics and economics or even discuss media mergers if you don't understand economics and the way things really work.

Media General had their conference call on Thursday, October 31st. It was mentioned on the call that they expect the Young merger to be finalized. The government shutdown evidently did not have any major delay in the paperwork. There is a meeting on November 7th, 2013 and the board is expected to review and approve the merger.

This is all related to the boards of each company approving the merger. It's still pending FCC approval. It will probably remain that way for some time considering they docketed it. Not that I think it should be held up or there are any issues. That's just the way I see it playing out. Belo's board already completed a similar action approving the sale to Gannett.

So the countdown is on until Thursday's shareholders vote. And on the latest article about it from the Richmond Times-Dispatch, Media General states that this merger could open doors for MG to acquire more stations in the future.

But they can't even manage the stations they already own now (ie: WFLA, WCMH, and WNCN).

They do hint about doing "station swaps with other companies in a way that would 'realign properties in a more logical fashion'.”

I think one station in particular may come into play...but it's been covered to death in the last 16 pages and I think the only logical scenario that would exist would be either FOX or Media General making an offer or selling it to them...

Lockwood could be a target...WBXX is already tied to the hip with WATE.

Even the Hoak and Morris stations divested previously could be targets if they ended up on the market....

And delving deep into speculatron territory...if Sinclair buys WTVD and keeps WLFL....WRDC could be spun off to Media General and run by WNCN. This way, each station in Raleigh-Durham has a duopoly partner.
