Carolyn Johnson Leaving KGO

If that's the case she should stay at KGO. I wouldn't even take the lead anchor position at WPIX.

That's only a guess since she said she was going outside of the San Francisco market, and hey WPIX has said that instead of using talent they already have for the new shows, they were going to hire from the outside.

The Lieberman rumor mill/rag says she's going to KNBC (in between a ton of other BS like Disney prepping KGO and KABC for sale, lulz), but that's a "hunch." Los Angeles is the typical next stop for Bay Area talent so it wouldn't be surprising if that's where Carolyn winds up.

I'd expect KGO will name Ama Daetz as Carolyn's replacement. They have a history of promoting anchors from within, and Ama's been on the rise there for quite some time.

Can't remember where I read it but seems like they have been using Kristen Sze as of late to fill-in for Carolyn. Now if Carolyn does wind up at KNBC I would rather see Kathy Vara get the noon & 6pm slot, and have Carolyn do the weekend evening shift.

...and have Carolyn do the weekend evening shift.

No way would Carolyn Johnson be leaving to work weekends. (Things might be rough at KGO, but they're not that rough.) Wherever she ends up, it will be a primary weeknight position.

Kathy Vara is more then deserving to be promoted to a weekday/weeknight slot and I would rather see KNBC promote her and put Carolyn Johnson on weekend nights. And the weeknight newscasts are pretty well covered at 5, 6 & 11 by Chuck & Colleen. So if Kathy was promoted I can see her co-anchoring the noon show with Whit and reporting at 5 & 6, and being the primary fill-in for Colleen at 5, 6 & 11 when Colleen is off. Would be something like this:

Weekdays

Today in LA: Michael Brownlee & Michelle Valles

Noon: Whit Johnson & Kathy Vara

5, 6 & 11: Chuck Williams & Collen Williams

Weekends:

Today in LA: Adrian Arambulo

5, 6, 11: Adrian Arambulo & Carolyn Johnson

Another option would be: (Assuming Carolyn does get a weekday position)

Weekdays:

Today in LA: Michael Brownlee & Michelle Valles

Noon: Whit Johnson & Kathy Vara (Both would also report at 5 & 6, and would be the primary fill-ins for Chuck & Colleen)

5: Chuck Henry & Colleen Williams

6: Chuck Henry & Colleen Williams, or Chuck Henry & Carolyn Johnson (Carolyn would also report for the 5 & 11 pm shows)

11: Chuck Henry & Coleen Williams

Kathy Vera is not moving to weekdays. She was already there and was demoted to weekends.

And Carolyn Johnson is not leaving weekday nights in the #5 market for weekends in the #2 market.

Even though I really don't like most of Rich Lieberman's reporting, I think he's right that she's going to KNBC. There are so many KGO-NBC ties these days, with former GM Valarie Staab overseeing NBC Owned Television Stations and former KGO news director Kevin Keeshan as the news SVP for the O&O group.

Mark Matthews, who was KGO's lead political reporter until he was laid off last year, just joined KNTV this week. Add that to Janelle Wang making the KGO to KNTV jump back in 2012, Jessica Aguirre in 2007 (though that predates Staab and Keeshan) and a number of managers and I think Lieberman is correct. Staab and Keeshan are installing their people in the big O&Os, which is why Colleen will probably be getting the boot in favor of Carolyn. Kathy Vara is definitely not going anywhere besides the shows she's currently anchoring. Remember, this is television—the longer you stay in one place, the higher your risk of getting canned. Simply being around for a long period of time doesn't buy you job security or entitlement for advancement.

Do you know that for a fact? Do you have insider info for KNBC? Sure Kathy was demoted to weekends...but that don't mean she can't be promoted to a weekday slot and I've seen quite a few stations shuffle anchors around ie moving a weekend person to a weekday position, a weekday person to a weekend position and vice versa. Not saying this is what will happen but it's a possibility. And Carolyn most certainly won't be getting the 5 & 11 shift as that is already covered by Chuck & Colleen and I highly doubt KNBC wants to move them off that schedule. Carolyn if hired by KNBC in a weekday spot will most likely get the 6 and do general reporting for the 5 & 11.

It's possible that she could only be a weekend anchor at first though. Wendy Tokuda left KPIX in SF for KNBC in the early 90s and went from a main weekday anchor at KPIX to weekend anchor at KNBC but she was promoted to main anchor briefly so maybe Carolyn Johnson will start out as weekend anchor and then eventually get a weekday slot.

I really can't stand Lieberman. His writing is very unprofessional, and he has no filter, though if you look through all the bias and weird old man doom-and-gloom voice of God projections, he's well-connected enough that I think some of what he says has some truth to it somewhere. I hate reading him, but a fraction of what he says must have had some truth to it at one point in time.

With that said, Carolyn Johnson is the Bay Area's loss.

It's common sense. You don't demote someone and then promote them in short time. Can it happen? Sure. Is it likely? Probably not. Never said she's taking Colleen's spot. I see her getting the noon and/or 6pm.

Most likely I think she would get the 6 as they only put Colleen on their after they pulled Lucy off the 6 pm show. Michelle Valles is more then capable of handling the noon show as well. And hasn't it always been that way that Colleen never really did the 6 just the 5 & 11 and was just put on the 6 temporarily?

What are you guys going to do when she doesn't end up in LA?

I was thinking maybe she was heading to NYC and WPIX to anchor either the new weekend morning shows or the new weekday 11 am show, but the blog said she's heading to LA and KNBC. She could end up in Milwaukee for all we know but wherever she lands she'll be great I'm sure.

The ND who moved Kathy to weekends is still there. What makes you think that he will reverse course and send her back to weekdays? It's been said before but it's very likely that Carolyn will fill in the vacancy left by Lucy Noland and while I don't foresee Colleen Williams leaving, I can definitely see Carolyn being her primary sub.

Yes, but I don't see her getting the noon. I believe KNBC will have her anchor the 6pm & and be a primary fill-in (in addition to Kathy Vara) for the 5 & 11pm shows. Michelle Valles or Lolita Lopez (Who I have seen anchoring the noon show as of late) are more then capable of handling noon duties. Carolyn would also most likely be a general reporter for the 5 & 11pm shows. Let's not forget some NBC O&O stations have the people who do the morning news, also do the midday/noon shows. WTVJ, WVIT & KNSD are the 3 NBC Owned stations that have the morning team also handle the mid-day shows. So Michelle Valles at KNBC or even Lolita Lopez can do the noon show as well.

With WNBC, WMAQ, WCAU, KXAS, afternoon/evening anchors handle the mid-day, so it's not out if the realm either. Valles and Lopez could just be fillers for the moment.
