Guest Former Member 207
Seriously? All that daytime news coverage from multiple stations and they still have an hour uncovered? For many years, KCAL had a 2pm newscast, plus a 3pm half-hour, with Inside Edition at 3:30; around the end of 2014, they re-arranged their daytime schedule (around the time that Queen Latifah's talk show cancellation was announced), and moved Judge Mathis to 2pm, and cancelled one of the afternoon newscast to make room. Now with Inside Edition (back) on KCBS, KCAL re-established their 4pm newshour. Big Country News 435
Surprise they didn't add a news channel for Michigan? Michigan is well covered by local stations. And plus, in the Traverse City/Cadillac DMA, there's already a 24 hour news channel on Spectrum (WMNN) Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/16254-report-charter-launching-new-spectrum-news-channels/page/2/#findComment-195742 Share on other sites

I think Detroit should have one, considering that they have an all-news radio station in the area in 950 WWJ. nathannah 2428
I think Detroit should have one, considering that they have an all-news radio station in the area in 950 WWJ. Detroit just needs a new news operation, period. It's strange to think in 2018, a market that large is controlled by three TV stations and the News/Free Press with little competition otherwise (and it's all tabloid, far away from the Bill Bonds era). I'm surprised they never launched any kind of local volley in St. Louis, either, where you have the same situation among three stations and the Post-Dispatch (outside of more competitive Cardinals coverage), but a 'hasn't really changed since the 90s' mindset (probably best they didn't try to match the billion dollar contract Fox has though for Cardinals baseball). FiveNews 372
The question is... will KCAL bring back the 2-5pm daytime news block they used to have years ago? Doubt it. KTLA and KABC have news at 3pm. KCAL was gone back and forth many times at the 4pm hour. It goes a few years for an hour, then they scale back to only 30mins. KABC truly OWNs the 4pm hour. I'm not sure how much of a player KNBC is. No need for KCAL to get in the mix just to get a few scraps. compubit 673
There was News 24 Houston and News 9 San Antonio. San Antonio got theirs back but Houston is still waiting for a return. Don't expect to see a Spectrum News channel in Houston - back a bit, during one of the cable consolidation activities Time Warner (most Texas Metro areas except D/FW) swapped systems with Comcast. Houston went Time Warner/RoadRunner to Comcast, Dallas went from Comcast to Time Warner. Would be nice to see a full Spectrum News channel in Dallas, rather than a few Video-on-Demand pieces from Spectrum News Austin/San Antonio/Central Texas (a few random packages and an occasional political show, but no full newscasts... tyrannical bastard 3950
Had Time Warner allowed ONN the time of day on their Ohio systems (instead of refusing to carry them initially and later burying them in digital cable land), they could have made more of an impact. Now that Spectrum has the Time Warner systems, their move since they hold most of the cards.... Weeters 1916
Spectrum recently posted a bunch of new positions on it's jobs website for "Spectrum News Wisconsin", based out of Milwaukee. After years of rumors, it seems like this is finally becoming a reality. Some listings refer to the station as "Spectrum News Wisconsin" and others "Spectrum News Milwaukee". https://jobs.spectrum.com/job/milwaukee/news-director/4673/8343111 https://jobs.spectrum.com/job/milwaukee/anchor/4673/8161219 https://jobs.spectrum.com/job/milwaukee/chief-meteorologist/4673/8161228 https://jobs.spectrum.com/job/milwaukee/reporter-mmj-spectrum-news-wisconsin/4673/8538453 https://jobs.spectrum.com/job/milwaukee/assignment-manager-spectrum-news-milwaukee/4673/8538445 There are also some jobs posted in Green Bay and Madison for Anchor/Reporter and MMJ. https://jobs.spectrum.com/job/madison/reporter-mmj-spectrum-news-wisconsin/4673/8538451 https://jobs.spectrum.com/job/green-bay/anchor-reporter-mmj/4673/8171536 The Chief Meteorologist listing makes mention of a station owned Baron radar, which means it would basically be the only station in the market using it's own radar. I believe all the other stations gave up on their own radars years ago. WTMJ dropped theirs when they got WSI, and I don't recall seeing WITI or WISN's on air for a while. Here in Ohio, we’ve also got some listings too... I wonder if Spectrum is making arrangements with regional “market-leaders” to house this operation? For example, WBNS would be a logical place for this operation in Central Ohio, seeing how much of the infrastructure from the old Ohio News Network is still in place at their studios. LoadStar 364
I do wonder how this will work in Wisconsin. My first thought: Assuming this is a news station with a statewide focus (given a nearly statewide reach for Spectrum), will viewers in, say, Rhinelander or Eau Claire or Wausau sit through stories from Madison and Milwaukee? Or vice versa? Also, Milwaukee is a heavily newsed market, and Madison nearly as much. The two tactics Spectrum could take to try and compete: go big, or go cheap. Going big is expensive with no guaranteed return. Going cheap is what Sinclair did with NewsCentral, and they had their butts kicked up one side and down the other because everyone in Milwaukee could see what a ridiculously cheap operation it was. Again, assuming that this is a statewide news channel, I guess they could attract enough eyes in some underserved areas of the state, and whatever they get in the big markets like Milwaukee or Madison is just a bonus. Are there other markets that Spectrum or Time Warner Cable entered that are similar to Milwaukee? How well did the market embrace them? appleachian 131
The North Carolina Spectrum News (née TWC News14 Carolina) runs a different feed for each market, but it’s all anchored out of the same studio in Charlotte I believe. They do have local stories relevant to each region, plus localized weather and traffic. Don’t see any reason why they couldn’t do something similar in Wisconsin.
