The worst news opens of all time

Alpena may the one of the last markets in the country that's outright missing a network over the air. WBKB's main channel is CBS, and their subchannels are ABC and a FOX/MNTV combo in widescreen SD, but no NBC. The only other over the air station is a satellite of WCMU in Mt Pleasant.

WPBN fills in that slot on cable BTW...

WXTV's massive flat white box look is terrible compared to WNJU Telemundo 47's graphics.

The graphics from WNBC are fine.  The abrupt cold open with no announcer introduction is just too quick IMO, compared to their previous intros.

Better than some other intros on this list but...NNN's truncated open compared to their previous grand animated intro, or the late Brokaw early Williams era open, sucks.

The worst opening montage that KIMA/KEPR ever had...the first version of Action News. This is with the Battery music package that was used up until 2018 when Sinclair finally started transitioning them. The same montage had been used a year prior with a variant of the CBS Enforcer music package and a different announcer.

It's not as choppy as I've seen in other videos, but the graphics scream "yuck"! Compared with KOMO and KATU at the same time, with the same owners, they treated these folks like the red-headed stepchild.

I'd like to induct a new Canadian member of the Worst News Opens Club... Bad 3D, vapid music... Earl Mann's VO is the only good thing about this. What was WIC thinking!?

In 2022, that 'falling windows and breaking building' open does not look well at all. 😬

Yeah...that's pretty bad. They don't even know what they want to be. Fox News? Fox 59 News? 59 News? And Ariel being the theme too? Yeah...🤣😂

They're a CBS station on 59.1, Fox on 59.2. 59 News is the general brand, but with a more specific logo, depending on the time slot. Nothing new in the industry.

They could probably tighten up the branding for each stream since FOX runs at different times than CBS for local news.

For WTRF and WBOY, the generic approach is more necessary since they simulcast their news on their ABC subchannels alongside their respective CBS and NBC main feeds.

WBKB 2022: I think they blew their entire budget for the year on that open.

Wow that's bad! And wow that's a lot of network affiliations!

This is what happens when you have a monopoly on a market.

And when you're the smallest market in the country with a standalone news department. (unless KNOP North Platte has one too?)

I can't put my finger on the lower third design, but i'm thinking it may be one of the default VMIX templates.

I don't want any station to get Gray's Honeycomb gfx ... but even that will be 1000x better than this.

This one is just...lazy

Indeed-- when you bill your anchor team, you need to at least have pictures of them, either with their names or without (and you don't have to verbally bill their functions; WPRI Channel 12 in Providence, RI in 1992 [on what was then Channel 12 Eyewitness News, on the then-ABC station in that Rhode Island capital] had an effective one that had Ernie Anderson billing the anchor team of Walter Cryan, Karen Adams, John Flanders and Barry Diamond for the evening edition; Flanders and Diamond had video of their functions behind their images and names [Flanders w/weather, and Diamond on sports], and that made that evening edition opening in that New England capital work remarkably well, IMO).

Here is that WPRI 1992 opening:

I never knew up until now that KEPR was pronounced as it were a word (Keeper).

Also, it seems like the anchors there introduced themselves backwards.
