This was posted here many years ago, but since we're on the subject of Ron Magers' early Chicago career, it's perhaps worth revisiting... KTCA, the PBS station in the Twin Cities, aired a long, thoughtful report about Magers several months after he had moved from KSTP to WMAQ: 3 Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/869-classic-video-thread-pre-2008/page/385/#findComment-259128 Share on other sites
newsteam13 394
Starting in like 1983, PAUL Magers picked up where his brother Ron left off in the Twin Cities. Meaning that, after Ron left KSTP for Chicago in 1981, his brother Paul came to Minneapolis/St. Paul in 1983 to anchor at rival KARE 11 (WTCN at the time). When it came to giving the Twin Cities the news every night, Paul filled the void that Ron left. Tom Rhyther (sports) and Barry Zevan (weather) couldn't get enough of the Magers brothers in the Twin Cities. After they worked with one brother at one station (Ron at KSTP in the 70s), they went to work with another brother at another station (Paul at WTCN/KARE). 24994J 5575
And the Ron-a-thon continues, with Carol Marin's farewell speech, as she (and later Magers) famously left WMAQ in protest (May 1997). This Vimeo channel has digitized much of Carol's personal archives, and is on a bit of a posting spree this week. WWUpdate 1292
That Vimeo channel is a great find. Among the uploads so far is another farewell by Carol Marin -- the final edition of her 10 p.m. WBBM newscast, an ill-fated experiment from 2000 intended to bring more in-depth, issue-focused reporting to commercial television. You'll find her concluding remarks at the 29:35 mark: 2 Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/869-classic-video-thread-pre-2008/page/385/#findComment-259133 Share on other sites

VHSgoodiesWA 303
WDAF NewsChannel 4 Primetime, from 10/9/1994. This was less than a month after they went to FOX. Dave Helling (now at the Kansas City Star) and Sue Abrams anchor. https://archive.org/details/capture-a-668 KPIX Eyewitness News at 11, 4/9/2000, with Barbara Rodgers https://archive.org/details/capture-a-662 Also, skip to the end of these commercial breaks for the open of WRC-TV's NBC 4 News at 11, taped 2/8/1999. Late and forever great Jim Vance on this one. https://archive.org/details/capture-a-660 Don't forget that most of these newscasts are also being uploaded on YouTube thanks to a friend of mine who agreed to reupload some of my videos with my permission. He mostly specializes in closing logo compilations, but this time went way above and beyond and has put about 20 of my newscasts (and eventually many commercial breaks and sign-offs) back on YT where they also belong. 24994J 5575
Continuing with Carol Marin's archives, here's her appearance on-set with Dan Rather on 9/11, plus reports from the following days. She's clearly in shock in that first spot. And then there's this. Carol was interviewed on many broadcasts, post-resignation, Good Morning America Sunday with Bill Ritter, followed by CNN's Reliable Sources, and Tom Snyder's Late Late Show. Man, who could forget what happened in Denver 25 YEARS AGO? FALL 1995...That was the time Mile High City Television (matter of fact TV in ALL of Colorado) had changed forever. 9 became 4 of course. As you see here, NBC had moved from KCNC to KUSA. 4 became 7, because CBS moved from KMGH to KCNC. 7 became 9 because ABC moved from KUSA to KMGH. Indeed it was confusing, but it grew on some of us. Along with the switch came changes in partner stations, especially in Colorado Springs. KOAA was a partner station to KCNC, seeing that they were both NBC affiliates. After the switch KOAA's partner station became KUSA. KRDO was partner station to KUSA, because both were ABC affiliates. But KRDO's partner station became KMGH and it still is today. KKTV and KMGH were partner stations (both were CBS affiliates), but now, KKTV's partner station is KCNC. See how the BIG SWITCH not only affected Denver stations? ALL of Colorado TV changed forever 2 Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/869-classic-video-thread-pre-2008/page/385/#findComment-259282 Share on other sites
