That was MG/Lin, not MG/Nexstar. Hearst should have taken WJAR, honestly.3 points

I don’t want to belabor the point further but just what does intelligent mean in morning TV? I certainly don’t feel any smarter having watched CBS over any other program lol. They hosts singers, actors, chefs, social media stars too - just without the flashiness. I’ve seen a viral video or two be shared on the show for a “cute” moment. Lipstick on a pig if you ask me.3 points

The first 30 mins of each morning show has decent news quality content. However, CBS Morning’s 8am lifestyle hour is still superior to the Disney sing-a-longs, half decent pop music performances, and deals and steals on GMA … and the laugh, cry, “authentic moments” on Today. (To it’s credit the 8am hour of Today is still more watchable than GMA). GMA & Today feel significantly dumbed down from their former selves. CBS Monings might have a few flaws (attempts to mimic the competition, and Gayle’s constant opinionated side remarks) but it’s still the more intelligent of the three shows.2 points

Thing is when NBC sold the station in 2006, the Telemundo stations were operated independent of any NBC O&Os, they merged many operations later on. The sale was more of NBC getting out of smaller markets, essentially reversing the merger with Outlet 10 years earlier. NBC does not operate any fully English speaking duopolies. Even here in the NY area, most of Telemundo' 47s operations are completely separate from WNBC. It is not the same as CBS owning WCBS and WLNY. At the time when Nexstar bought MG, it was mentioned a key driver in Providence was that both WNAC and WPRI carried Sunday football, which was a major money maker. It outweighed WJAR's then significant dominance in news. Sadly, Nexstar sold WJAR to one of the worst options out there.2 points

I guess intelligent morning tv would be like the Bryant Gumbell/Jane Pauley years on Today as the best example. Extended interviews, news magazine type feature pieces and conversations with people like military generals, foreign policy experts, and introspective authors. Dumbed down would be modern GMA. Stories on some former Power Ranger actor caught up in a murder mystery or secret recordings of dentists’ snarky side comments while the patients were under anesthesia (ACTUAL stories that they have done). CBS Mornings on the other hand would be focusing on millennial home buyer-ship rates, climate change’s threats to Florida’s oyster population, and pandemic exoduses from cities to the rural areas (actual stories they’ve done). They borrow some bits from the competition but the positives outweigh that for me.1 point

Do we think new O&O graphics will roll out this week or next week? WABC used the new ABC logo in their 9/11 coverage, but just during the opening graphics. The bug used the old ABC logo, which is odd considering normal news coverage has been using the new logo in the bug and the old logo in the opens.1 point

A 1990 news report about the hobby of TV DX'ing from WSMV-TV in Nashville, TN. Featuring a rare mid 1980's ID from KCWS-TV, Ch. 3 in Glenwood Springs, CO.1 point

It speaks to the strength of WABC’s news team that they’ve maintained years at #1 with some of the worst graphics and iffy sets in the market. KABC and KGO have better looks and sets. The flat abc logos from the 90s looked better than the 2021 flat logo. Perhaps because it’s surrounded by graphics that don’t match and is on a hd not sd television.1 point

Show sucks now. Used to watch the hard news CBS This Morning when it relaunched in 2012 and kept watching through to 2016ish. When they started making unnecessary changes to the show, including format, anchors, music and graphics even, things started to go downhill. I wanted to give this latest incarnation a chance, I really did, but this show is total crap. Gayle is more aggravating every day and Nate doesn’t look comfortable (none of them do). The random bits and silliness really take away from their mission. And I imagine viewers are tuning out in droves too.1 point

Follow up. The FCC has greenlighted the Lotus acquisition today (9/10). This approval comes with a condition: So close this deal by three weeks from now (10/1). Or you won't be able to until after the FCC renews your license. I've never seen this kind of stipulation before.....1 point

Are you all watching the same show that I am? The reporting is in depth and layered and smart. They have great chemistry and the set is stunning.1 point

Top Ten things we copied from our competitors... 10) Giant video walls 9) location, baby! 8- Giving former Co-Anchors the "Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien" treatment 7) A newfound appreciation for Smooth Jazz 6) Outdated references to bits from retired CBS programs 5) That DJ we found leftover from the TRL days at Viacom 4) Paint everything orange- that got the Today Show 5 points, right? 3) Hey look! We got an couch from IKEA too! 2) Retired NFL players make great anchors! 1) Sure Willard wore a dress, but we gave Tony a fun hat! All possible sarcasm in the jokes is implied.1 point

Sandra & Joe solid pairing that would work well on weekdays, but the current line up is already solid. WABC really has strong anchor talent currently.1 point

100% agree. I’m not sure why anyone is upset by this, it ties in really nicely with WABC’s horrible presentation.1 point

At least it matches the cheesiness of WABC's graphics now.1 point

Considering that KABC ad still uses the current coloring of the 7, I'm not sure that's entirely the final design, but it almost seems like the O&O's are rebelling against the size mandates. WLS just ran a graphic for the upcoming 'Windy City Weekend,' and it features a logo closer to current WABC, who I imagine will also adopt this version. The slightly different circle 7 is straight out of New York, and the ABC placement is sized and positioned in an almost compromise middle ground between what WABC and WLS have been using. Personally, I don't care for it, but I'll adjust. With current WLS over new... Current WABC...1 point
