Look, I’m not some sort of sappy royalist who thinks the American networks should cover nothing but the British Royals for the next ten days. I’m not a fan of the American obsession over British royalty either, and while Queen Elizabeth II was a remarkable woman and head of state, the institution of the House of Windsor is extremely flawed. Also, Prince Andrew can kiss my Royal Irish A$$™. That being said, when a 70-year head of state passes away and news outlets from the UK, the Commonwealth nations, the U.S., and all around the world cover it on the *day* of her death, that isn’t obsession; that’s news. “American obsession” isn’t an excuse for one network’s gross incompetence, ineptitude, and stupidity from the top down. When every network, news outlet, newspaper, idiot with a camera, and their mothers are all reporting on this story, that means it is an event of *international* (a word that NewsNation’s staff likely had to look up in the dictionary) significance. It is not the time to run a Blue Bloods rerun and bitch about the whole thing in prime time. That being said, I will admit to having one obsession: NewsNation itself. As I write this, I am well aware that I am spending WAY too much time and energy on a channel that gets outpaced by Newsmax in terms of both viewership AND news coverage. Yes, even Newsmax, which was born out of an opinion magazine and has always had serious credibility issues, is more of a news channel at this point. NewsNation is not a serious news outlet, and unless there is some cataclysmic event at the network itself, it does not warrant any more of my attention, time, or energy. I imagine many others can say the same. One last thing and then I’ll shut up about this farce of a channel for good: Even NewsNET did a better job with coverage today. They ran this story on their channel at 2:30 PM ET. YikesNation indeed.4 points

Just a polite reminder to all. Not only does not every market NEED a full fall wrap-up, what full-market changes are posted don't NEED to be novels. Short and to-the-point is everybody's friend.4 points

Someone asked if Cuomo's left-wing CNN material is designed to balance out the Shine influence. I believe it's worse and more pathetic than that. Between Cuomo's attempted comeback story and Abrams' constant bitching about the state of (cable) news, they seem to be setting up not an "Us v. Them" political bent, but an "Us v. The World" attitude, where they think the viewer will see them as a sympathetic underdog. I can't even make fun of how lame and sad that is, because they're even sucking at playing the victim.4 points

Not surprised about that given KPRC has essentially become KNBC East (since it is a port city unlike where KXAS is and has ex-KNBC personalities Daniela Guzman and Anthony Yanez on staff), and any day now I expect Graham to cash out, with NBC very likely to scoop up the station and create a duopoly with KTMD, even with the new KPRC+ which could very well be a test case for a potential future independent subchannel with second runs of syndicated shows, additional newscasts, filler and live high school sports (including the very popular Texas tradition of - wait for it - high school volleyball on Tuesday nights...). Also, just for the record, while I am definitely not a soap fan by any stretch of the imagination, the Days of Our Lives finale - set in a mausoleum scene - did not have a dramatic outro. That furthers my suspicion that NBC's earnest efforts to compete with ABC for the afternoon news ratings may be a tad bit underwhelming. Wouldn't be shocked if eventually NBC fills a game show, like Password which has done well in primetime this summer or - prayerfully - a return of Concentration or Sale of the Century, with the latter perhaps as reparations for much of the Jim Perry run in the 80s supposedly being lost, either in the old DOOL slot or maybe in between OG Today and Hoda & Jenna. But if any game show from NBC's past deserves to be brought from the dead, it should be Scrabble!3 points

With the 10am hour, which burnoff is more pressing...her contract or the one with the Blue Bloods syndicator?3 points

Reading the previous few posts there is a common theme. Despite its name, NewsNation is not a full fledged news network. It is part time to begin with, is inflexible with the 24 hour ever changing news cycle. It has many limitations on covering major stories and events. It seems more a read a wire service, splice in some video, make it about the personality service. For those of us of a certain age who remember the beginnings of CNN (and even the short lived Satellite News Channel from Group W) they may have been run on the cheap but committed full time to the news and had agreements in place all over the globe for breaking news. The UK and US are intertwined in their special relationship. Could NewsNation have had a deal in place with the folks who do ITC, Channel 4 or Channel 5 News (assuming BBC has deals in place and has coverage of BBC World on many cable lineups and Sky is owned by NBC Universal)? In some ways you can look at this as a test of NewsNation's ability to cover a major international story and they failed, miserably. The good news is very few people probably tuned in to watch Dan Abrams kvetch (His ratings are minuscule to begin with and the opening NFL game was on last night) and Cuomo and whoever else Nexstar decides to bring in won't increase viewership much. At the end of the day, NewsNation is not the go to channel for breaking news stories of any significance. I'm not sure it ever would be.3 points

Something tells me they may bring John along to do feature reports on certain weekdays; sort of like how Vanessa or any other weekend anchor will do reporting on a few weekdays when not working weekends. We shall see!2 points

I heard it was going to focus on good news with interviews, so not like a typical newscast. Cindy does seem like a perfect fit for that. I remember watching her and Morry Alter as a kid on the morning news and she has always had such a friendly delivery. I really hope they also give her noon but bring John Elliott along with her, because the two of them work well together but especially if it’s a good news type of newscast, John is good at that, too!2 points

Oh, my goodness, NewsNation actually acted quick on big news for once... Color me surprised!2 points

I've aired my grievance before about Brenda Blackmon and Kaity, and I'll say something similar about Muller. It's a disappointment that his tenure in the evenings didn't last (while Tamsen Fadal's still there) and that he was pushed off to weekends (and she wasn't). They should've kept John on weekdays and demoted her. I previously found Tamsen an okay anchor, but now I must ask... What do they see in her? Why is she still where she is? And what is so important about her that the execs insist she's their main face of their news op -- when better is right in front of them? Does she have an ironclad contract or something?2 points

Yup! I don't think Savannah is necessarily the answer for MTP. Plus how legitimate are these rumors that she and Hoda don't get along? What is it about the culture of Today --and NBC News entirely-- that always has hosts leaving in controversy? Kristen Welker wouldn't be bad. An outside face might also help the program.1 point

I'm sure it'll be just a temporary branding. New York and Chicago are sticking with the CBS 2 (News) names for their 9am entries, and we know that won't last.1 point

Oh no, that is such a beautiful set and totally agree it is still in good shape. Time surely flies, I can't believe it's that old. Hopefully they don't get a generic set, that would be a downgrade. Down here in San Diego, I can name a number of stations that totally need a refresh: KUSI, KGTV, KFMB. At this point, I don't think KUSI will ever demolish what they have.1 point

From a purely journalistic standpoint, this is a serious issue. However, I don’t think it will do much to negatively impact CNN here. While the stigma against Muslims in this country has decreased somewhat, news outlets of every sort still have a level of deference toward national security analysts. I’m personally not a fan of having that much deference, but that’s the status quo across every American news outlet, for better or worse.1 point

Oh, but it will be a full-fledged news network. It's just going to take longer for NewsNation to be so, as they won't be going to an all-news schedule until 2024 at the earliest. https://thedesk.net/2022/09/newsnation-nexstar-24-hour-news-channel-plans/ Speaking of, Matthew Keys posted a tweet yesterday that I feel should be worth paying attention to, since it validates what I said earlier about NewsNation being far behind when it comes to news being broken outside of their news hours:1 point

You are very correct. Dan Abrams said on his show that he doesn't understand why cable news loves to harp on the British royal family and how we Americans are "obsessed" with it. One, I beg to differ on the "obsession" part. Two, they're just doing their job! Nobody's harping on anything! They're just telling it like it is and reporting on what they're seeing. Often, they'll also do this while they're on the scene, by which I mean "on location" at the site of, say, London, for example. Gross negligence of highly important news that is being broken literally everywhere else but NewsNation can't be played off as cable news "obsessing" over something trivial, much like how the July 4th shooting in Chicago just a few miles away from the WGN building (where NewsNation is housed) can't be played off as us being "obsessed" about something that we could've very well yawned at, even though this is July 4th we're talking about, you know, America's birthday! The news cycle runs a lot faster than those at NewsNation think, and their choosing to air reruns of "Blue Bloods" over wall-to-wall breaking news coverage isn't befitting of a channel like NewsNation. They wanted to be a news channel. So far, they're still not being it, even when we completely disregard the fact that NewsNation is still airing completely unrelated syndication programming that can be found basically everywhere else, including streaming services! Not having an international bureau is fine, as long as you can still break the news of something that may have importance on us Americans, like, oh, I don't know... Britain's longest-serving monarch in history passing away at 96! It doesn't take a genius to figure this out. When news like this breaks, you need to come on the air as soon as possible. Same for important tornado warnings, flood warnings, whatever! Otherwise, expect to lose a lot more viewers and trust than you've already lost simply because you think we're "obsessing" over news that is being covered practically everywhere else but here! NewsNation should know that by now, and yet, they still don't!1 point

Whatever CBSMV is called this season must've demanded they carry that second-run (and not after the news replay overnight) is the only thing I can think of and it was out of the station's hands. On another note for a show ending tomorrow...anyone working on DailyMailTV must be cursing that they didn't get to end the show with today's news.1 point

There’s a small market station in Minnesota (KMNT I believe) that is taking the noon ET feed so it will air at 11am CT there.1 point

NBC News Daily will air live for four hours every day, one hour for each time zone (minus Alaska and Hawaii). So, KPRC must be taking the Pacific time hour of the newscast with Kate Snow and Aaron Gilchrist.1 point

The channels on Pluto TV, which is FREE look better than channels they want you to pay 150 bucks for with the cable subscription. That in itself says a whole lot.....unless that was the goal in the first place.1 point

Happy to see Alexis Christoforous reporting on the local newscast for ABC News, but they really need to teach their anchors how to pronounce her name. More than one has gotten it wrong.1 point

Speculation but I have to say I wondered what they might do next. NBC is known for making knee-jerk decisions based on ratings. GMA has become the winner across the board in recent months but not necessarily because of its own strength, but because Today is hemorrhaging viewers. MTP has fallen to 3rd place behind FTN and This Week.1 point

I wonder if they're having a chair problem now? The anchors are back at the main desk, but they're standing. Ukee's a foot taller than Jessica.1 point

Honestly it was better when it was the WGN Superstation. Simulcast the WGN Morning News and 9pm news again. Run Blue Bloods and ITHOTN reruns during the day. I’m sure that’ll get them higher ratings than what they’re getting now. Problem solved. Money & dignity saved.1 point

And we have problems already. Muslim groups are sounding alarm bells over CNN hiring John Miller as its chief law enforcement and intelligence analyst. https://nypost.com/2022/09/08/muslim-groups-slam-cnn-for-hiring-ex-nypd-official-john-miller/ Miller, a former NYPD official, "told the City Council earlier this year that the department never engaged in illegal surveillance of Muslim Americans after 9/11." Contrary to what he said, the department acknowledged that they did engage in said illegal surveillance (which was the subject of a Pulitzer Prize-winning report from the Associated Press in 2011) following the events of 9/11, with New York City Mayor and retired NYPD captain Eric Adams saying, "What we did was wrong." It also admitted that the program did not produce any leads to a terrorist plot. Yet, even after those, he continually refused to admit that there was any wrongdoing by the NYPD. Thus, Muslim Advocates have called CNN's hiring of Miller "a cruel joke" and are convinced Miller will pick up from where he left off and continue to "propagandize on behalf of law enforcement and dismiss clear discrimination against Muslims and other marginalized communities."0 points
