I’d rather it take forever and be done right than having it take 8 months and be done completely wrong.8 points

When I think Byron Allen, I think of his Entertainment Studios show from years ago that would be on before the morning news. And those shows were meh at best.. So to consider him a top rate broadcaster would take some time...5 points

KTIV continues to poach the remnants of Siouxland News https://www.ktiv.com/2023/05/30/news-anchor-larry-wentz-returns-home-ktiv-news-4/ And, at least SBG isn't holding the employees they screwed to non-competes. Not that they would hold up in court if they tried.3 points

OMG ABC O&O has got to be the slowest ever in rolling out stuff... This has been going on for way too long. We've been talking about this for 2 frickin' years and barely 1/2 the stations have flipped to the new weather graphics...2 points

Why would you assume that once Ed passed they would sell? Ed never had no reason to sell, and he said it himself. i'm sure he told his kids not to give in to corporate pressure. Yes, the family has other business properties. The small family own stations are trying to hold on to their business holdings, and they come from an old school generation.2 points

Allen Media has a long way to go to decent respectability. Owning the Weather Channel is a good start, but the bottom line is Allen Media (and Entertainment Studios) are the slumlords of daytime TV with all of their cheap "court" shows.2 points

Ironically, Akron's basketball team is probably the best sport they have. As for the rest, it proves your point exactly. The school actually cut their baseball team a few years back, and they've actually debated about dropping out of the Mid-American conference to go FCS. They're one of those schools that falls short of ticket sales, so they have to buy up all of the unsold tickets just to maintain attendance standards to be an D1 FBS school. And to actually watch Akron, it's usually buried on ESPN+ (along with the rest of the MAC) while Stadium truly airs more of the FCS teams and conferences we've likely never heard of!1 point

Look at the sidebar and ticker with extremely inane and degenerate gambling figures and statistics from Bally. Outside of direct friends or family and university students that are only there to watch the game, their viewership is either the lowest of the low bettors, oddballs who refuse to watch paid sports networks for some reason, or sports bars that need to fill one of their eighteen screens during the day.1 point

Gray is now a weeknight anchor, and Walter is not, so the former gets the big show in such a basic hierarchy. I don't know who did the earlier shows, so I don't know that Gray needed to be pulled from his regular 10pm slot, but I'd imagine the 10 wasn't a top priority on a holiday.1 point

WSJV's transmitter was relocated to the WSBT tower several years ago (and will serve as an upcoming 3.0 lighthouse), so it's been extraneous real estate for Gray for that long outside lease money they get from WBYT (WSJV's former FM sister).1 point
-
Another factor for the sale; WFLA and WTTA share UHF High 9. WSNN is on UHF 26. You move that transmitter to Riverview at the same height as the full-powers, and you've got a solid UHF signal serving the most important parts of the market to simulcast WFLA and WTTA and can keep WSNN's main signal in 720p (safe bet they dump all the Scripps subchannels which already air on WXPX). WSNN already news-shares with WFLA, so there may be no on-air changes outside a transmitter move and having WSNN cover the non-prime slots (including the presumptive 10pm WTTA show) in lieu of WFLA.1 point

I think he was referring to the logo at the end. A pretty generic logo IMO, but that's apparently what they're going for this September. I expect the logos for the other seven stations to look more or less the same.1 point

Let's clarify something up... its no longer used on O&Os but is STILL used by affiliates. KWTX Waco and the Griffin duo of KWTV OKC and KOTV Tulsa are such examples.1 point

Los Angeles isn’t New York. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it. All those people that tune in expect the same basic product they are getting now. What you are suggesting is like New Coke.1 point

Just a way better use of the space and a better layout for presenting info, if most of these stations insist on using the ticker for all dayparts. KCAL's is phoned in, with the old ticker that overlaps the lower thirds, and the base version that most others are using is just too empty and hard to read, with white text on blue or orange. KYW and KDKA have the right idea, as well, with the dark gray ticker to match CBS News. Feels like less of a distraction, for them.1 point

One of the plus sides of an anchor suddenly leaving a station is you get to see different faces in new places. At WABC, it’s been nice to see Sandra Bookman and David Novarro in the morning on some days.1 point

I think this thread is losing focus and becoming a list. In the end, an employee was let go for using a slur about a coworker at work (presumably) to another coworker. We can do better than trying to figure out whether the woman deserved to be slurred by her coworker at work.1 point

That may be it. Of course, I'm in no rush to see that man go. He's part of my childhood and he can still go. Let him break the record and then ride off the sunset after. He's only doing one newscast anyways per weekday...1 point

Agreed. IDK about the pay part but Russ Mitchell left CBS News in 2009 to take a lead anchor position in Ohio. Contessa Brewer went from MSNBC to WNBC. I've seen reporters in bigger local markets go down to smaller markets in order to get a anchor position. Example Sheldon Dutes or Jummy O from WNBC going to Orlando and DC respectively. Sometimes taking a step down can make for a more comfortable working/living position, or a larger role in a smaller organization. Exactly. The person who made the claim about Shirleen not being nice to work with, I'm not saying it's false, we just need more context and specifics. Yes, one complaint makes it comfortable for others to speak up, but it also looks fishy if people out of the blue start complaining about someone after one allegation. From personal experience...you can't base your opinion of someone by other people's judgments, BUT you can use it as a warning.1 point
-
If that’s true, then the blame is solely on Camille Edwards and Dave Davis. Not Shirleen. No offense, but blaming an anchor for the missteps of a news director and GM who haven’t been in the building for years is beyond unfair, especially when this talk about Shirleen amounts to nothing more than baseless gossip. Are we supposed to blame Sade Baderinwa for taking Roz Abrams’ old job now? I get it, but in any workplace, you have a responsibility to maintain standards of professionalism. No one claims to know what the working environment was like, nor do I think anyone is trying to “destroy” Ken. However, we do know that WABC fired Ken with cause. I don’t like the fact that he’s gone either, but there are ways to settle your problems without getting your a$$ kicked out the door. I work with plenty of people I don’t care for, but if I called any of them that slur, I’d be gone too.1 point

Wow if that PageSix allegation is true then that is really an utter shame. I'm sure he may have had his reasons for saying that and there are always two sides to every conflict he still handled it in a very horrible way and now this will probably cost him his entire career. Kinda sad too for someone at the height of their career to do such a lowball act like that, even if it is something personal they may have with each other, Ken should have never handled it like that. While conflicts amongst colleagues can be inevitable, they should always be approached with a respectful tone and manner. Now we all know that Page Six is known for their tabloid, inflated, and speculative stories so I hope it's not true but nonetheless, that is horrible and such a self-destructive act, even if it was a fleeting moment. If these allegations are true, then he probably won't be hired anywhere else anymore. Now recently, Ken and Shirleen did the Holiday Cookoff in December together, and it seemed like their chemistry was impeccable on the air. And now all of these promos that they just did have to be scrapped now, talent opens, graphics, etc, it must be a whirlwind right now to think of all of the things they gotta do, let alone find a new anchor to fill that seat. If the allegations are true, then WABC did the right thing and we should all stand by their swift action. That kind of disrespect should never be tolerated anywhere regardless of the career you are in. WABC has an integrity that is unmatched anywhere, so they have to uphold that. Anyway, I guess that's yet another lesson for all of us: Regardless of your career, where you are in life, or how high you are, one simple word or insult can tarnish it all. Respect in the workplace, especially during these times is super important, no one should be immune to the repercussions associated with any violation of integrity and respect of colleagues. WABC did right if the allegations are true.1 point

Well that's disappointing if true. Shirleen to me came acorss warm and bubbly on camera. Unfortunately, the news --much like the rest of the corperate world-- can be a very fake and two faced industry.1 point

This definitely doesn't seem good for WABC in any way. It is good they took action for Ken, but this is suddenly now giving a lot of attention to Shirleen (again, its NYPost commenters, but it seems like most on the comments are actually defending Ken and blaming Shirleen). I suppose we will see what happens in the coming days and months with arrangements. There's still another longtime morning anchor (and more deserving) that should be in the weekday anchor chair, who's name starts with an M. It would be really cool for Phil Lipof to come back, and reunite with Michelle on weekdays! I feel like that would be quite the strong duo, and viewers have already come to know them. Purely wishcasting, of course.1 point

If true, sounds like ABC acted quickly and made the right call. Good on them for prioritizing the workplace environment.1 point

Anyone know the status of the new studios for News4NY and Telemundo47? Any timing? From some plans that were posted last year, I'm assuming it will have some elements from WRC (the circular look).1 point
