I totally understand the phasing out of male co-anchors during the latter third of last century, for obvious reasons, but as women have broken through and feature more prominently in weather and sports coverage, I don't know why even one-off fill-ins of male co-anchors are still seen as a non-starter. It just seems silly that stations look like they're afraid of the virtually non-existent blowback.4 points

No more newscasts. Please. It will just be rehashed packages and VO/SOTs from the morning news. EDIT: I say this also because in some markets, news directors will expect "one man band" multimedia journalists to switch up their packages for multiple newscasts.3 points

One of his claims to fame seems to be having an absurd anti-Asian streak, which is, especially for me, enough not to like him. He’s also a remarkably unserious commentator, even by the standards of this particular network.3 points

Rare indeed. Cool! I was just thinking about this. Some of the most iconic anchor duos -- especially in NYC -- have been two males yet we rarely see it in news across the country anymore. In sports and radio however, it's commonplace. My assumption is networks trying to appeal to a certain demo? IDK.3 points

Just because one country's show had more winners than the other doesn't mean it is better. IMO, they both were boring. Also, "you heard somewhere?" Where did you hear it? And what are you *even* talking about with Seacrest being married?2 points

I don’t know why stations think it’s taboo or something. It was commonplace back in the day. KYW did it earlier in the week too.2 points

WFSB announces new set on-air WFSB-Hartford CT has been working on a new set. Expected completion according to their site- end of summer. I think they’ve had a long history of pretty great sets (my opinion) but the most recent one, while probably the most technologically advanced, was rather bland and one dimensional.1 point

WCBS made another interesting anchor decision this morning- teamed 2 male anchors together (Doug Williams with Dave Carlin). I believe the only other NYC station to do this was WNYW a few years ago? Interesting how 2 women anchors are so commonplace and 2 males are incredibly rare, at least in the NY market.1 point

I see that too, which is funny in hindsight, considering HLN’s shift away from news.1 point

Someone has uploaded the full hour to YouTube. They've recreated more than one Local Forecast intro plus there was some limited narration, regional conditions plus satellite and radar and even a travel cities forecast! This is an unusually decent effort for something that runs at 4 in the morning.1 point

He is their media reporter writing for their media newsletter. He thought he was being clever tying the bolder font with a bolder direction. Perhaps you disagree. It's not just "some Trump tape from 2021." It is audio of the former president of the United States, currently under federal indictment, admitting that a document he was so cavalierly showing off to a writer was classified and that he could no longer declassify it. It completely blows up each of his public defenses since last August. Yes, it is news, and MSNBC led with it last night at 9. And don't worry, CNN devoted much coverage to Russia as well. The fact that it's from 2021 does not make it any less newsworthy. Hearing the former president say this stuff, instead of just reading transcripts, is rather incredible, and gives new insight into his tone and the tone of those around him. Any news organization wishes they had obtained this.1 point

Incorrect; it’s a third of the article. Oliver Darcy managed to pump four whole paragraphs about the font, the graphics, and how the new graphics were somehow emblematic of Chris Licht’s tenure. Forgive me for expecting better from a major American news outlet, but I think it’s rather childish for a reporter to ramble on about this sort of thing in an attempt to air the network’s dirty laundry. Of course, that’s just my opinion; others are available.1 point

I'll be curious to see how many different cities are covered on the Retro 8s. Going to have to remember to DVR it tonight. Also of note, because "Weather Doesn't Happen On Weekends™", both Retro 8s and Twilight Live are only scheduled to air on weekdays; however, because the TWC programming day starts at 5am ET, this means that Retro 8s actually airs Tuesday through Saturday morning at 4am ET while Twilight Live airs Monday through Friday morning at 5am ET. Also, it looks like they have already dumped the Byron Allen game show from their schedule. They must have gotten some backlash for that.1 point

Looks to be permanent, as it’s scheduled for next week as well. There’s another automated program on TWC’s schedule, Twilight LIVE (presumably using the same night maps seen on Pattrn and TWC en Espanol) which airs right after it.1 point

Give it a few weeks, as I think that source said. The changes started yesterday, and they're slowly going back to the old one. I think they're recreating it from scratch, or finding the files to help do it from.1 point

The classic LOT8s is back (sort of)…but you’ll have to get up very early to see it.1 point

Yeah, that is definitely the oddest part of the article as far as I’m concerned. Fun for those of us who care about such things. Weird for the other 98% who could give a hoot1 point

Both Puck and CNN's own media reporters are reporting graphics changes over the next 2-3 weeks with initial changes already underway. That suggests to me that the changes in font may be a temporary fix or part of future changes.1 point

CNN covered Russia/Putin excessively over the weekend and the first part of the day yesterday. CNN Obtained the Trump tape and broke the news exclusively and ran with it throughout primetime. If MSNBC (don't think FNC would) have obtained the tape they too would be running it exclusively.1 point

Watters may be the dumbest and most lightweight host Fox has (and that's saying a lot).1 point

Even this temporary set looks better than what WNBC has. Well lit, smooth, not too washed out. EDIT: This is a tired discussion but John Elliott belongs on the weekdays again, especially doing feature segments for the 9am. Give Cindy Hsu the noon as well.1 point

A few updates for Scripps, mainly that as of Friday, The List and The Upside were cancelled, and have been replaced with a live hour of Scripps News a la NBC News Daily, which connects to the integration mentioned above. For The List, here's their goodbye video. The second thing is that the withered corpse that was the original HD graphics package for The Morning Blend from the Journal days (2008 vintage!) is gone and replaced with a sunnier Scripps-generated package. It's been on for months on KTNV, but just got to WTMJ. And here's the TVNC article regarding the change; it looks like it'll roll out to more stations in the fall, and KIRO is actually carrying it in Seattle.1 point

I should've known; I really don't trust Puck to get story basics right, so this is just another confirmation of that and it was just the graphics people adjusting, so my last post doesn't really stand (though I'm sure the meddling is there all the same).1 point

Actually, The Weather Channel ran live cut-ins during their docuseries block, at least in the afternoon. I caught one that ran during their 2:00 p.m. CT airing of Mayday: Air Disaster (about 20 minutes before the Greenwood, Indiana tornado touched down). Wasn’t familiar with the meteorologist they had doing the updates.1 point

Any bets on how long it takes Watters to become radioactive? That's not just Carlson's old timeslot -- it's O'Reilly's, too.1 point

It's a minor change, and it's....ok. Still way too much mix and match on font weights, the now no-longer rounded edges on things like location bugs feel misaligned since I think the space is still there for the curve but now it's just an edge, the gaps between the name of the reporter and title like above feel way too big, that all caps on the flipper is a big no... Ok, so maybe OK is a little strong. Slapdash feels better. I wonder if they might be experimenting a bit to see what may or may not work rather than just loading up the old graphics template and calling it a day.1 point
-
I don’t think I would have noticed the changes if you hadn’t pointed them out. I really want CNN to succeed…1 point
-
Looks like the graphics change has been implemented. Keeping the new graphics but making some adjustments: Person's name and title is again displayed under the headline, which is bolder. Locators have been squared off, as has been the CNN bug (except for the top-left corner, not pictured here), but the curves remain elsewhere. The flipper is now written in all caps and is often nearly impossible to read (I'm sure this will be addressed quickly). So definitely not the "back to the old style" that Dylan Byers reported but more of a hybrid adjusting the new design.1 point
-
Granted the old graphics are better than what's on screen now but they should focus on getting an entirely new look. I'll give it to current CNN though, if something isn't working such as CNN Plus or their new graphics package, they'll get rid of it quickly. Keep the flip ticker though.1 point

Give me an old John Wayne or Perry Mason/Raymond Burr classic any day. Cheers, Seinfeld, Home Improvement too. The Conners is one of the few first-run sitcoms left that still follows a classic comedic format, not modernized and PC. It's been the trend for a good 10 years and especially took over during and post-Covid.1 point

Frank Field, longtime WNBC (and WCBS and finally WWOR) has passed away at age 100: https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/pioneering-former-wnbc-meteorologist-dr-frank-field-dies-at-100/4471040/0 points

WNBC News 4 New York just reported that longtime former WNBC meteorologist, Dr. Frank Field has died. He was 100 years old. It was announced on tonight’s 6pm newscast. It was a great tribute reported by Chuck Scarborough. I’d include a link, but doing a quick search I couldn’t find anything; not even on nbcnewyork.com!0 points

CBS is partnering with The Weather Channel to provide weather segments/reports during CBS' morning shows and their Evening News. There will be a viewable Weather Channel feed through CBS' website, also. https://cordcuttersnews.com/cbs-teams-up-with-the-weather-channel/0 points

Speaking of UK game shows, Noel Edmunds' version of Deal was 100x better than Howie's. No fancy models opening cases (or in this case, boxes), Noel had a sense of humor, the contestants came from all walks of life, and it wasn't gimmicky. Most of all, it had NINE £250,000 winners, the highest prize on the show. US Deal only had two $1,000,000 winners after they added numerous million-dollar cases to the game. UK Deal never did that. I suspect Person, Place or Thing will go to my local FOX station in central/SE WA, just like with Pictionary and 25 Words or Less. I heard somewhere that Vanna will stay on with Ryan Seacrest in 2024-25 on Wheel of Fortune. Seacrest has never been married so that takes away a female 'Seacrest' from taking over Vanna's role.0 points
