  2. Or a certain orange-skinned individual. This would be a very good time for Sinclair to sell some of their stations, and not just small ones, either. But something tells me the company's response to that would basically be, "If we can't control those stations, NO ONE CAN!"

  3. I think that Kristen Welker has improved the broadcast (Meet the Press) since she has taken over, especially the editions produced outside of the studio. My only problem is that NBC News (or Welker) doesn't give shout outs to the venue that temporarily was home to the broadcast. I feel that this is missed opportunity to make long lasting connections to the communities that Welker goes to. That said, I am trying to figure out where the broadcasts done out of the studio originate from. When it originated in Iowa last week, the broadcast was done from a furniture/salvage shop in Des Moines (West End Architectural Salvage). Today she is in Manchester, NH, in what appears to be a event venue, if anyone knows anything else, I would love to know.

  6. If ABC was truly that concerned about St. Louis, then the affiliation would have been taken elsewhere a long time ago. ABC could have even bought a station and started their own news operation if they were that concerned. But, I think they know St. Louis is news saturated and doesn't need another newsroom. They don't have to be "happy" about it, but they also know there's a slim chance that the affiliation would end up on any of the existing news-producing stations, and it's not worth building a new one.

  7. And the tragedy in that is these local newsrooms and network affiliates. Despite being run by Sinclair and pushing out all of their garbage, there are still a lot of talented, competent journalists they employ who know how to cover their communities, and are great at breaking their own stories that often uncover actual corruption.

  9. Yeah, I can confidently say, (in my humble slightly biased opinion, of course) that WABC for the first time in pretty much forever, is the clear winner with the graphics in the O&O group (and arguably in all of NYC at this point.) WNBC comes close but I think WABC has the edge with their new graphics. Finally, and major props to WABC! It's so crazy how it took them a very long time to "perfect" their graphics. When I reflect on my time here on this great forum, some of us TVNewsTalk veterans talking about WABC's on-air presentation in the local New York Forum way back when TVNT was not even born yet (Local News Discussion) those who have been here long enough remember that forum haha, the graphics were always WABC's biggest gripe and chief complaint from the astute viewers of Channel 7, and we just felt that it just wasn't fair for "the top station in the nation" to have a lackluster boring, and pretty much subpar look. We collectively felt that WABC deserved to have a graphic package that is representative of a top local news station. And I gotta say, they sure as hell nailed it now with this new group O&O package! Above and beyond really, sure its flashy here and there but it's smooth and it works for them. Finally, after all these years of complaining about how WABC has had a lack of luster on-air presentation with their graphics, most people can probably put that to rest. Their news set while starting to show its age, (debut back in 2012 and over 10 years old now) to me still works, considering what they had prior which was pretty awful. The set still looks great and it still works to this day, as we've discussed on the New York forum for the WABC thread, the accompanying studio can be very versatile and just needs to be used more creatively and if they use it more they can squeeze more life out of it before the big move to Hudson Square. I think WABC is pretty much perfect right now and is finally looking like the #1 Station in the nation. I hope they continue with this package even through their move to Hudson Square. The graphics are so incredibly refreshing overall. Great Job!!

  10. Never in a million years could I see them doing that. What’s likely going to happen is the full theme with the typical scenes of people in the city and the “Action News, Delaware Valley’s leading news program, with…”. The only thing that will change will be the graphic at the end, which will be the new intro that all the stations are adopting.

  11. Studio space might not be an issue. KDNL's old studios at 1215 Cole Street were up for sale last year, as they jumped ship to Brentwood, MO where the Allman Report was being filmed. If Scripps and/or Weigel wants an in town studio that's turn-key, 1215 Cole is it. https://www.loopnet.com/Listing/1215-Cole-St-Saint-Louis-MO/27232037/ If we are "news saturated" that seems to be news to people here. A quick look at any newscast that KMOV has proves a lot of news is being left on the table. KPLR isn't really producing much of anything, other than essentially a rebroadcast of the previous KTVI newscast. It's leaving KSDK and the Post-Dispatch to find rest of the news out there, but they don't have the resources. We need another functioning newsroom. Spectrum News doesn't really have any sort of obvious presence.

  13. Not to sound speculative, but I do think the prospect of networks dumping affiliations with certain station groups is becoming more feasible. The networks (except for Fox) are already able to distribute “network-only” feeds of their programming; ABC did just that when Sinclair and Hulu had a carriage dispute last year. Sure, it might be a loss for OTA viewers, but I’m sure the networks would find a way to get their feeds carried on streaming/cable. It’s not as though the networks care that much about OTA antenna viewers anyway; if they did, we wouldn’t be seeing Peacock-exclusive NFL playoff games. I don’t see it happening anytime soon, but I do think there will come a time when the networks won’t need the affiliates, especially if they’re run by a company like Sinclair. I’d be intrigued to see what the TV landscape looks like 10 years from now. Disney can’t be happy to associate with Sinclair, and I imagine if the opportunity presented itself, they’d want to rid themselves of that association.

  14. NBC is probably their weakest link. Despite them owning stronger stations like WJAR, WCYB, WTOV and WJAC, they have weaker stations like WOAI, and self-created abominations like WPMI, WTWC, WEYI, WNWO and WNBW. Despite WNWO and WTWC being the only ones Sinclair owns outright, it's a black eye on the markets these other stations serve. NBC can't be too happy with them these days. Even MSNBC recently eviscerated David Smith's recent purchase (and Sinclair in general) on Alex Wagner's show the other night. While the whole group going away is unlikely, it may be like what happened with WJMN in Marquette. If there's a more willing station to take on NBC and provide a better path, NBC would happily oblige. It happened years back (pre-Sinclair) to WRDC when Outlet plucked the Peacock to their-owned (at the time) WNCN after decades of failure in Raleigh-Durham.

  15. Not sure if this is is a harbinger of new graphics... WISN has a very competent Creative Services team, and this is pre-produced. This seems in line with their recent promo work as well, and if you look closely, there are still a lot of the design language of the current "diagrid" package within those. Plus, WISN has a history of straying from the standard graphics """mandate""", so...

  17. Absolutely no sane person, no person with a shred of mental competence, would willingly allow themselves to be made a target like David Smith has. This is worse than your typical delusions of grandeur that the likes of Elon Musk have. This has a good chance of not just killing the Sun outright, but coupled with the $500M in legal fees from Diamond's bankruptcy case, could damn well be the death penalty for hundreds of television newsrooms across the country, if not a financial death penalty for David Smith and Sinclair as a whole. I'm going to say it. Something is very, very wrong with David Smith and his mental state.

  19. At the very least, I like that talent opens still exist. It allows anchors to own their slot rather than being interchangeable. They're also more grand than the boring two second opens we get on stations like WNBC. Overall, the new ABC O&O package isn't the best BUT it's better than anything WABC has had in decades and I'm just greatful for that. I enjoy their use of gradient blue L3 rather than the over proliferated paper white box look.

  22. I’m getting dangerously close to deleting the weather apps for KTUL and KOKH from my phone. I’m disgusted at what Sinclair is doing to the stations, especially KTUL. Don Woods is rolling over in his grave right now. The only other Sinclair stations I have weather apps for are KATV, WEAR, WPDE, WSBT, and WHAM.

  24. Three potential reasons for this: 1) The open is being generated live out of Ross. Like a Viz, there needs to be dedicated system resources for playback, and any video save for MP4 or the platform's preferred codec would be an enormous resource hog. 2) Video probably makes the whole canvas look too busy with everything else going on around the main frame. 3) Licensed stock stills are less expensive than video

  28. Here's the thing: David Smith's inability to understand how a newspaper works will make this a disaster from the start. A newspaper is not insulated by retransmission revenue like his Sinclair stations and cannot withstand any loss of subscribers or advertising. The Sun also has competition from the Banner, which has clearly found footing as a digital enterprise and would benefit if there was an actual "cancel the Sun" campaign. If David Smith wants to literally blow hundreds of millions of dollars with a good chance of no return on investment, that's bad for him, bad for his other commercial enterprises, and ultimately good for the rest of us.

  33. Ok I thought it was just me! I'm glad I'm not the only one. I think they added texturized elements. Diamonds, lines, and the stars are all 3D. It's noticeable in their set in the background and on the desk also in the L3. But they're still keeping with the same red, white, and blue theme. Its a subtle change. They also used a drone over the river in Des Moines which showed augmented reality graphics. Similar to what NBC/MSNBC does with Rockefeller Center during election coverage. It is more noticeable in the NY studio that Anderson uses. Seen here on this video on cnn.com.

  36. Yeah overall its crazy how it took WABC this long to finally look like the top station in the nation. These graphics are finally on par with their identity as the #1 Station in the nation. The look of WABC is elevated by far, and they quite frankly are the best-looking station now. So I echo the same sentiment with everyone on here since I started writing on these forums nearly 20 years ago the chief complaint has always been how lackluster WABC's graphics always were compared to the rest of the local stations, but now finally we can say they are up on top now. The news theme is old but it still works and sounds modern enough, way better than what their sister, WLS in Chicago did for their new opening which sounds like a mess. WLS should've kept their old News Series 2000+ themes that were iconic for them, hopefully, they'll revise it in the future, but I highly doubt it haha. Seems like news stations are holding on to their themes longer now and changing themes isn't as a big thing anymore as it was back in the day. The Eyewitness News intro sounds a bit different, with the removal of the "news ticker" sound as someone mentioned, also the opening tease cut is a bit different too more of a beat to it now and less melody you hear the drums and bass more I guess haha for lack of better words. Here's an Evolution of WABC's Graphics from the early 2010s to Today for comparison. Giant Octopus Graphics Package (2012 - 2016) Previous Package "Downgraded Look" (September 2016 - January 2024) Current Package "Best Overall" (January 2024 - Present)

  37. A sad day in Baltimore, since the Sun was a vocal critic of David Smith and his escalation of Sinclair into a national powerhouse of propaganda. Given their current state under Alden, it sadly may actually be an improvement, since the paper is once again under "local" ownership.

After a seven-year stint at WCBS, she returned to PIX11 in 1993, where she has remained since (spending 14 years of that tenure as weekend co-anchor, before moving back to an assignment reporting role in 2009).

  41. This is why I avoid posting most newscasts from 2010 and later. Besides, why should I? I collect *VHS and Betamax*, not DVR recordings... On the other hand, videos will be coming slowly but surely to the AVTB account. There is now a 10-video limit per day, then it forces the account to verify with a QR code or picture or some random thing. I guess the site thinks we're spamming it or something...

  42. I've always viewed WABC's visual format as a take on print-tabloid aesthetics. While the newspaper age definitely on the wane, in a lot of aspects NYC is still a tabloid town, especially among working class people. The large text probably doesn't hurt with an older demographic either. While I haven't been a fan of WABC's previous looks, I kind of got what they were going for: legibility, bold flat colors, a general "punchiness" - a loud look for a loud town. This new look is a nice 30 year time warp to the present, but still within the realm of WABC's overall visual tradition, can't complain!

  43. WPVI still holds out, but their current lower thirds are pretty decent. Very Graham like. I almost hope they don't change. PVI's flat graphics look cheap though. These can definately stand the new upgrade. Just like the new Cox package, 3D and flat look awkward when mixed. Reguarding tone which was brought up during the WABC's discussion...Having seen snippets from their evening newscasts, especially when Jim *Gardner was there, 6ABC has a real national evening news like presentation. Very clean and ultra professional news product.

  44. I mean, they sort of always have been on the flashy side when it comes to their presentation of the news. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think their product is anywhere near the level of sleaze and shameless tabloid junk that WSVN was pumping out in the 90s, and the station does (and has done) plenty of serious journalism. But their newscasts have always had a “man on the street” feel to them, at least imo. This is an Eyewitness News promo from the 1960s. The subject matter would still shock some today, so imagine how it was received back then.

  45. I think the only way that they would start selling is if they start losing network affiliations. Most of their stations rank dead last in markets in news ratings.

  46. The issue with the set is that WABC is not using it to its full potential. You can see just from the 10am show how versatile the set and the lighting elements are.. but it took them over 10 years to try anything different. Even the secondary area with the big screen for weather/traffic and interviews can look dramatically different with the flip of some switches. That said, I’m glad they made the switch to cleaner, brighter and better background images. It does give the set a minor but nice facelift to match the new graphics. As for @Vlad’s wish for the new HQ set to be a street side studio — sorry, there will be no street side studios at Disney/ABC’s Hudson Square campus.
