  1. Nextar and Tribune before them have always had good Fox looks. This continues the trend.

  2. What's the point of calling that out publicly on air? Bragging rights? All the networks take turns doing pool for all of those kinds of big events.

  3. It's all just for show. WBD doesn't have a leg to stand on. I helped work on a $1.5 billion bid package about fifteen years ago (not for the NBA) and it was rejected because a clueless executive missed signing one section that was required in a part of the proposal. Our proposal was only within $100,000 of the winning bid.... And we almost sued, but the company lawyers said good luck with that. I jumped ship and ended up working for the winning company instead, so I guess it worked out for me in the end.

  4. Wow! Didn’t see this one coming: KPRC/Houston is canceling its 10a newscast after less than a year. The Drew Barrymore Show, which has been airing at 3a on Nexstar’s KIAH, takes over the KPRC 10a slot as soon as the Olympics end in 2-ish weeks. https://mikemcguff.blogspot.com/2024/07/kprc-2-replaces-10am-news-with-drew.html?fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAAR1jyb61wnrmGLopO8_mw9g9zM_nnKc9uVcjIlj7866SHhG8KU_xCoNBsuc_aem_4uxUJF846hSOEl9FEtULQg

  5. Scripps needs new graphics altogether. This flat blue plainness is completely uninspiring compared to their old graphics package (minus the ad box on the left of the L3)

  6. It looks fine. I suppose it's better than the current standard Nexstar Fox graphics. I don't think I'd say this is better than the O&O BNF graphics.

  7. Perhaps. But from experience, when you love/are passionate about the field, coming in on the weekend (once in a while) for historic events can be more exciting than a chore. It gave me serious FOMO on an off day to see huge breaking news and not being there to cover it. But that's just me.

  8. Remember when WBNX was an up and coming WB affiliate that had the Ninety and Nine Club on twice a day? Here's a clip of the intro circa 1998 featuring a much more jovial (and mockable) Rev. Angley. I was testing a new flying erase head S-VHS VCR at the time, and I figured it would be useful some day.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4MeBfVdGcb4

  9. So have some of the main news anchors at ABC, NBC, and CBS been forced to cut their weekends short 2 weekends in a row now? I hope they got overtime pay - I know I wouldn't want to have to work two 6-day weeks in a row...

  10. Let's save some time here- Most markets have an established newscast in that timeslot that would likely beat the NBC affiliate's fledgling entry. WGN>WMAQ, KTLA>KNBC, WITI>WTMJ, WVUE>WDSU, the list goes on. Is it set in stone anywhere that it has to be a newscast in the timeslot, or could smaller markets opt to run a true crime/Dateline syndication? Does a larger owner like Gray produce more InvestigateTV pieces for their affiliates to differentiate their newscasts in that timeslot?

  11. Kansas City wouldn't be the only place where the NBC affiliate would have tough sledding against an established Fox station's newscast at 10/9. In my neck of the woods WXII would find it rough going against WGHP; in Atlanta WAGA would crucify WXIA, which can't beat WAGA anytime it seems like; Birmimgham: WBRC would easily beat WVTM, what with its shares consistently hovering around 60; Tampa: WFLA does well against WTVT but that's on an equal footing like 5 and 6 PM; WTVT has an established 10 PM newscast. And I don't feel confident about some of the o&o cities: WNBC would go in as an underdog against WNYW, just as WRC would against WTTG. New York and Washington are two cities where the Fox (formerly Metromedia) stations have had 10 PM newscasts for decades. In short, this is risky business because if the NBC stations do get the time back they are going to start 10 PM newscasts and the odds are not good in a number of markets.

  12. I mean, this is what the Scripps package should be and what the Fox O&Os should be using too. Granted I don't like the modern flat era at all, but this makes it palatable.

  13. I still remember the story about how WTMJ Radio in Milwaukee lost the rights to produce Badgers content to Learfield because someone at Journal submitted the paperwork late, being overconfident because before the 90s, the UW programs were a national joke and they figured 'we have a long relationship, they'll understand' (the UW Regents did not). They still carried the radio broadcasts, but it was one of the balls that started the inevitable roll towards Learfield/IMG producing anything college and after Journal/Scripps decided not to move the Packers to FM, the team did it for them with iHeart. WBD had two years to seal this up, and I think the dumping of the Turner Sports brand for that awful long WBD Sports monicker was the start of their doom; they quickly adjusted to TNT Sports, but it isn't Turner Sports. Really, I think it was lost the moment they decided to start throwing game simulcasts on TruTV surrounded by gambling and sports talk dreck; you've got Inside the NBA and Kevin Harlan?! Nobody gives a crap about some random multicast only out there for degenerates and to satisfy 'new content' checkoffs in provider agreements because you can't keep running Impractical Jokers all day and all night. The ESPN multicasts make sense to someone, but the TruTV content never will.

  14. Yes, those lower thirds have been used for specials, but they originated on 20/20, with a red line instead of white, and that episode's salacious true crime title.

  15. Really good looking set! Nearly thought it was Tegna based on the quality. But in all fairness Nexstar does have some good looking stations.

  16. They've been using those L3s for what they've dubbed "Specials", such as the retrospective on the Trump assassination attempt, and Biden stepping down, over the last two weekends.

  20. Saw that WKRG has picked up Judith Sheindlin's latest venture Judy Justice, and they will be airing it at 3pm weekdays, pushing their hour of Big Bang Theory repeats likely over to their CW station WFNA once and for all. WPMI has been airing Judge Judy repeats at 3pm for the past several years. Are those continuing, and I wonder if WPMI is keeping them if so?

  22. https://athlonsports.com/nba/nba-reportedly-leaning-one-way-following-major-tnt-media-rights-announcement There's a quote in this article that says the NBA is expected to reject wbd offer. It's an opinion held by New York Times Andrew Merchant. Other articles have stated similiar opinions as well. NBA hasn't officially rejected the offer, but many assume they will.

  24. I had no idea that WBNX had a different owner when it was launched. I thought Winston Broadcasting owned it from day one. I do remember reading an old article that WBNX was going to face some "must-carry" difficulty like what WOIO faced when it was launched more than six months before the double nickel went on-the-air. Speaking of WOIO, a lot of people think that station and WBNX were what helped WCLQ ceased being an independent station (with four indies in Akron, three of those Cleveland-based, it was too much to support all of them in the market in 1985-86) and flipped to the Home Shopping Club/Network.

  26. Fox issued a press release back in May highlighting their NFL coverage for this upcoming season (including Super Bowl LIX), and as many know that Tom Brady will make his NFL analyst debut with Kevin Burkhardt on September 8th (week 1), when the Cowboys face off versus the Browns in Cleveland. However, those in Tampa Bay, Washington DC, and their teams' respective secondary markets will see Commanders at Buccaneers instead. Greg Olsen, who served as Burkhardt's partner the previous two seasons will join Joe Davis as their #2 team, and there will be also some shuffling amongst the other broadcast teams. The only non-change will be the team of Kenny Albert and Jonathan Vilma. As per the USA Today, here's Fox's lineup of main broadcast teams (excluding the sideline reporters, although it's confirmed that Erin Andrews and Tom Rinaldi will work with Burkhardt & Brady) Kevin Burkhardt & Tom Brady Joe Davis & Greg Olsen Adam Amin & Mark Sanchez Kenny Albert & Jonathan Vilma Kevin Kugler & Darryl Johnston Chris Myers and Mark Schlereth

  27. I'd go as far to say looks better than Market 1 WPIX, and outside of Nexstar this looks way better than WABC.

  28. Not necessarily, but I suspect that a newscast would be what most stations would opt for. I don't have a Gray station where I live so I can't answer your second question.

  30. (sarcastic) Wait, did Gray buy WXIN? Because those opens and supers are Gray One wearing a bad disguise. (end sarcasm) The Nexstar election supers not matching the height or placement of the bug is just sloppy and, in theory, preventable.

  33. Didn’t want to make a new thread unless it’s official, KPIX this week has been using the “morning/sports” set on the other side of the studio for all of its newscasts except for its Noon newscast which is done in the newsroom. not sure if they are doing studio maintenance or possible speculation of getting KCAL’d with the new mandate set. the shots are so tight so I’m not sure if they moved the “set” next door where the virtual weather set is currently located. mind you, PIX never got the whole makeover mandate look. In 2020 they refreshed its 2012 look by getting the 2016 KCBS anchor desk, updated the duratrans walls, got rid of the traffic center in place of a couch set that never got much airtime which was converted into a secondary set now used in the mornings and sports. They kept the framing from its 2012 Jack Morton design look based from WBBM’s 2008 street side studio. I guess we will see……

  35. Large journalism schools like Syracuse and Missouri (among others) have the means, resources, and industry clout to keep offering courses in on-screen reporting even if the demand is not there. Smaller schools do not. For example, Arkansas State University discontinued its MMJ program last year due to low enrollment. TV news does not interest today's college graduates, and therefore, these schools have an incentive to offer courses in subjects that do interest students. After all, who wants to pay tuition for college courses that prepare you for a job where the median starting salary — according to a RTDNA survey — is $37,500?

  36. Sure seems like a cluster. It’s hard to understanding the decisions CBS is making.

  37. The opens no longer mention the time of the newscast, which feels cheap to me. The lower-thirds and anchors still say "CBS 2 News" and the CBS 2 logo remains everywhere. Are they trying to be gradual or is this really as uncoordinated as it looks?

  38. Wasn't their last cut of music a custom piece? I never heard it on another Tegna station....may be the same with this one. The open music sounds like Al Jazeera to start and the sting sounds similar to the Tegna elections theme. Not really liking the tease bed though. I wonder if there is a longer or alternate cut? I know a lot of the newer additional themes Sixième Son made for Tegna are just a bunch of mini loops strung together to make a 1-2 minute track, sometimes resulting in a disjointed theme. I do like the graphics in the open. It's obviously designed with their logo in mind, so I don't think it would translate as well to other stations.

  39. Effective Monday July 29, KDFW is moving Judge Judy to 3pm in favor of a new 4pm newscast. They are also launching a 6:30pm newscast that same day, moving TMZ to 11:30pm.
