  1. Veteran WANF reporter Rebekah Schramm has announced she is leaving the industry after 23 years at WANF and 7 more in the industry as a whole. For most of this news operation's history, throughout the numerous rebrands, she was one of the only constants. Personally, she really helped us when we first launched "Magnet Newsroom", gave us some great advice and I'm truly going to miss seeing her in the mornings. https://www.linkedin.com/posts/rebekka-schramm-ab60b67a_this-station-has-been-so-good-to-me-its-ugcPost-7235355559481257984-r2B9

  2. So, I didn't watch any of the DNCC 2024 Coverage because I was AT the DNCC.

  3. As I have said before, I think everyone did a good job overall. Glad to see everyone taking the opportunity to come up with DNC-related enterprising stories in addition to offering viewers streaming-only special newscasts. 'Tip of the Hat' to WFLD for bringing Flannery out of retirement to help with DNC coverage.

  4. A lot of WFLD's 'struggles,' if you will, stem from the fact that they have gone through a lot of behind-the-scenes people (NDs, Executive Producers, etc...) which effects what we see in front of the camera. If they could hang onto those executives, producers, etc... for more than 2-3 years, then they could establish a consistent look/feel for their newscasts. As far as the overall team, Jackson is a weak link on GDC; but they made a smart choice in re-hiring Gabriella Premus as traffic/feature reporter instead of outsourcing traffic. They're solid at Noon, 4P, 5P and 9P, but they need to hire more reporters to improve overall news coverage.

  6. It mentions Seattle so it looks like he’s moving within Cox to KIRO. Not uncommon. Many WFTV alums moved to Cox flagship WSB in the past like Zach Klein and Jorge Estevez.

  7. I was more so thinking CNN International Newsroom. Same thing with CNBC, I've always wondered why they don't just simulcast CNBC World in the overnight and evenings rather than random reality shows and American Greed reruns.

  8. Anyone fancy Amanpour, First Move, or Quest Means Business on the main schedule? Also, if I can expand a little bit on This Morning, I feel CNN needs to find a balance, hard news with a warm, welcoming feel. First, get rid of the panels, save that for "Inside Politics". Second, to address the warm and inviting part, let Kasie get loose some! Let her move around, personalize her sign on/sign off, heck, get her a couch like on the ATL set. I'm not saying she has to go full Robin but anything would be more welcoming than her current, cold, robotic tone, no fault to her, she's just going by the teleprompter! Story wise, TUNE DOWN THE POLITICS! Obviously if there is a breaking political story from overnight, then do that but if it's not breaking, viewers who are waking up early to catch the bus or drive to the big city to get to the job site don't want that, so don't give me two hours non-stop on what some politician said! In addition to the top stories and politics, make international stories part of the main news line up, and not a little "around the world in a minute" second or something. In July, the UK, a major US ally had a major election which resulted in a new party in power in a decade and how much attention CNN gave it domestically was just sad. Health stories, sports, and feel good stories are all good, and encouraged. Also, if we have to have a roundup segment, why not a local watch, short stories from CNN's partner stations from various sectors of the country. Do all of that, or even just some, and ladies and gentlemen, you'd have a decent morning newscast!

  9. If you mean what's shown throughout the ad, I think that IS the old set and the promo is acting in a way to show a "We're moving out of the old place" kind of thing. Still, very excited to see it, and if we get new graphics as well! This time of year, after Labor Day, can almost be like Christmas for us into the industry, so happy to know that we'll know at least get this new set!

  10. Its baffling how obviously clueless network news brass seems to be these days! Totally agree. American audiences are very insulated from global affairs because we lack international news coverage outside of a few countries. I wish more day parts on CNN were devoted to CNN-I simulcasts to differentiate itself from non stop politics on FNC and MSNBC. Like I've said before, CNN International would be a better use of HLN's basic cable space.

  11. I tend to view veterans as someone who has been at the station and/or market for at least 10 years. Yes Dorothy Tucker would be a veteran, as for the others you mentioned they are well on there way. Oh and Dane Palcko is also a WFLD veteran.

  12. Nexstar would have to sell off a few stations in order to acquire any additional stations they see as lucrative and keep WPIX.

  13. And I realize that this is possible because WCBS has canceled its 9am news in favor of an hour of Drew Barrymore.
    1 point
  14. Same here, that was surprising. I figured the low hanging fruit would be the ones where CBS was on a separate affiliate (and they are worthless to Paramount). However, I thought the next ones to sell would be the smaller O&O's (i.e., outside the top 10 markets).
    1 point
  15. As an O&O, the “option” isn’t much of one of the ultimate powers that be state otherwise. Moving Drew to a full hour at 3 certainly made sense, more so than that random Feud hour, but it becomes an interesting case at 9 am. Would it be odd to axe the just-expanded newscast? Sure. But could it become a casualty of what the network wants to do with its own properties? Also sure. It will be interesting to see how the various pieces come into focus.

  20. Since KCTV is channel 5.... WEWS capitalized on their channel number (5) to launch their 5:00 p.m. show years ago. There are a bunch of "Live AT Five" shows, but being on Channel 5 gives them the opportunity to brand their show as "Live ON Five"

  22. They kept the lightning bolt in the "12" of the Storm Team 12 logo, probably the only vestige of the Media General era. That was a common theme on their "crescent-era" stations that even made it on to stations like WCMH after they were sold by NBC. I"m surprised it took so long to de-Media-Generalize this station. Now it's KAKE that still looks like an old Gray station under Lockwood... It just goes to show you how circular the ownership in Wichita has been over the years.
    1 point
  23. Basically just CBS and whoever is running WWL right now, some of whom were there under Belo ownership. By the way, we should definitely have a logo discussion thread.
    1 point
  24. One "vintage logo" we'll never see on TV again for sure is likely the 1980's WVUE logo. During Hurricane Katrina, the station was badly flooded by the levee failures in the area, resulting in the station having to be re-built from the inside out, literally. Since then, the station has risen to become the #1 station in New Orleans, with it's own doing, and helped by the declining fortunes of WWL, mostly at the behest of their owners and CBS.

  25. Seeing that new WAVE logo reminds me of other local TV stations that got on the retro logo bandwagon: * KSTP-TV 5 of Minneapolis, Minnesota switched to a logo resembling their red and white 1982 logo. * WMAR-TV 2 of Baltimore, Maryland is currently using a logo that resembles their original 1975 logo.

  26. Number 1 isn't a reason, friend. WLKY uses Strive because all* Hearst stations use Strive. It's a group standard. *WMUR uses Hearst B because it has significant cross-coverage to WCVB.

  27. Why would WAVE, an NBC affiliate, use CBS Local?

  28. Actually it's the original version; been there for years. I do like the modern touch of merging in the 'A' and waveline in the new variation.

  30. It's a fantastic reboot of their old-time logo. I think it's going to be the next design trend as stations resurrect and re-boot their heritage branding because of how homogeneous and "networked" broadcast affiliates have become. WKBN doing what they did a decade ago was another great example of using their heritage "WKBN" sign as part of their logo.

  32. So what's the likely technical reason why this would happened? Could this be a flashcam studio that's shared by multiple networks, and the crew is responsible with changing the background between live hits? Or could this be a setup in Vance's home / hotel room where he himself would have been responsible for changing the background between live hits?

  34. Nothing wrong with a bit of Quest! The man is a legend. I'm surprised domestic doesn't make more of Amanpour. She's been with CNN more or less since the start and they could make a big deal out of that. As for First Move... what a waste. An Asian breakfast show that runs Tuesday to Saturday (Hong Kong time)... just whom does that serve? It's such an awkward show, both the timeslot and the content. And I think it's a waste of Julia Chatterley's talents - she knows financial news inside and out, whereas I don't think general news really suits her. Put her back on at 9am ET and make it a proper business show again. If CNN really wanted to push the boat out, they could even give her a co-host in London, a bit like the old World Business Today. I don't think Kasie is at all suited to the early morning show. I get why she's there (the show is obviously aimed at political junkies) but I don't think either she or the format really work at that time in the morning. There was nothing wrong with Poppy and Phil. I think in 6-12 months CNN will throw in the towel and bring back a proper breakfast show. New Day Mk II, anyone? You might remember, about 15-20 years ago, when CNN used to show an hour of Your World Today from CNNI every weekday? Something like that might be good again, to break up all the US news and political talk in the schedule. RE: the UK election - CNNI did a special marathon broadcast (which was actually very good) and I think it was also streamed on CNN Max. I wouldn't be completely surprised if, 5 years from now, CNN, CNNI and CNN Max all merge into one channel, shown in the US and around the world. I can't see CNN, certainly the domestic channel, lasting too much longer in its current form. I don't know if the cable companies will want to keep paying for CNN if a) ratings keep falling and b) they keep streaming parts of it on Max. Who knows, a merged CNN could even be a good thing, if they covered a lot more international news than they do now.

  35. Starting Monday, September 9th, WFXT is going all out for local news once again which I'm not so sure will work considering the amount of people who continue to leave the station. Regardless, WFXT is doing it. They're cutting the 4:30am half-hour of their morning news so it can then air from 5:00-11:00 a.m. (leaving WCVB all alone at 4:30am), plus all brand new: two hours of midday news from 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. They're also bringing back their hour-long 4:00 p.m. news after a years-long hiatus, returning the local news block to three hours. Finally, its all-night news starting with their usual 10:00, 10:30, and 11:00 news, then National News Tonight at 11:35, then Gray's Investigate TV+ (repeat from 1:00pm) just after midnight, and then... repeats of their 10:00 and 11:00 p.m. news from 12:35 a.m. until the morning news begins anew at 5:00 a.m. No, this is not a joke or a made-up schedule. This is according to TVPassport and partially confirmed by Zap2it as of this post. WFXT is really gonna go with this.

  36. A year or two ago, KOCO launched a midday newscast at 11:00am but it was temporary to make way for a 4:00pm newscast. It looks like they're bringing it back and it looks to be permanent. https://www.koco.com/article/koco-5-relaunching-11am-newscast-cameron-sibert-sabrina-bates-joseph-neubauer/61995987

  37. WBBM has been a disaster for decades. The reporters they have are awful. Im sorry. There are some good young reporters that are good. But then you have some who are so sleepy and dead in their delivery its like watching paint dry. I do like the new weather people. But the anchor team is just plain awful. And sadly because everything is automated now. Its been stripped of any creatively in camera shots and graphics and music. Its terrible. Thats partially down to the News Director. I look at KCBS/KCAL and WCBS and they are far more livelier productions. WBBM is just s l e e p y for a market the size of Chicago. Its too many small market people bringing small market ideas. And now that Paramount Global is broke its not like they can afford to bring some top talent. Im not sure anything will ever help them climb out of the basement. SAD

  39. The third hour of Mornings is optional. It will primarily be on CBS News 24/7 with a few affiliates carrying it. The 9am was recently expanded to an hour on TV and isn’t going anywhere.

  41. Paramount May be looking to sell some local TV stations From TV Spy — “Paramount Global may be looking to sell some of the local TV stations it considers ‘non-core.’ The CBS parent is exploring an option to sell independent stations in markets including New York, Philadelphia, Dallas and Tampa.” Also — CBS Mornings will be expanded to a third hour this fall. That might explain why The Drew Barrymore Show was moved to 3pm. I am guessing the 9am hour of CBS News Philly will end or be moved to a different time.
