The idea is interesting. Maybe it works maybe not. Trying new things with partners who handle their areas of expertise is fine. Live and learn. Years ago, like all the way back in the last century, WPVI Philly ran a store at the King of Prussia mall. Had a small space for reporters to do live reports though I can’t say I remember that part being used much. No coffee, but it had an assortment of station and ABC-show branded merchandise. Travel mugs, hats, pens, shirts…all that kind of stuff. Lasted a few years and quietly closed down. But it got them some branding in a high-traffic location for a while. It’s easy to find all the potential negatives and things to pick apart, but in a rapidly changing landscape, taking a calculated swing now and then can be worth the shot.4 points

A little bit of a tidbit for everyone. This week is the 4th of July holiday. It's known that employees can take a week of vacation. So wait about a week after, and if Johnson and Quinn are still off, then maybe that'll be where suspicions can be raised a little bit.3 points

Just going to flag that this shouldn't be a list. Airport newsstands and what WDIV is doing are very different ventures.3 points

This is common enough that I'm sure it's just a licensing deal.3 points

A little birdie told me uncle Warren said no to a sale - if he sold it would have tax implications given how he acquired wplg. I still think Fox will buy 10, and that the ABC deal was a hedge by wsvn management since Their fox affiliation expires 2026 so...2 points

That is what it feels like to me, they are keeping the seat warm for now just in case CBS decides the current Evening News format isn't working. Shall we start a betting pool for when Maurice will be back at CBS 2?2 points

Sunbeam Properties, so yes. Now they have a website devoted to it as well: https://www.sunbeamnbv.com/home EDIT: They've even included a PDF with detailed plans as to what they'll construct in NBV to replace the WSVN complex: https://assets.courbanize.com/sunbeam-north-bay-village/info-plans/5c4f61e19ee3eaf708ee5cb07d1630b9.pdf1 point

I wonder if this means that Haley Meier is permanently picking up Kendall's old shift, or maybe something entirely different.1 point

“We want to be a local news brand that builds community,” said Ellis. “By creating a space like this where everyone is welcome, we will be more local than ever before, and we believe that means something special.” Audibly laughted at 2:04am in the dark. They've no clue what to do to get eyeballs1 point

Yes. Back to WDIV... it is an interesting concept. I'm excited to see how it comes through and how its implemented. At least its something original because you don't see anyone else doing this.1 point

I'm guessing since a majority of the airport stores are NBC affiliates they're connected to CNBC deal with Paradies Lagardère. WRAL confirms that's who operates the store using their brand. https://capitolbroadcasting.com/2018/06/13/wral-opens-new-travel-store-at-rdu/1 point

WXIA had (has?? Not sure if still there) the same thing at Hartsfield-Jackson in Atlanta…it was funny that they continued to use the 90s era 11Alive logo and never updated the signage to the current red logo1 point

Network 10 in Australia recieved a brand refresh coinciding with the debut of 10 News+. 10 Bold Drama changed to 10 Drama, 10 Peach Comedy changed to 10 Comedy, and the Network 10 logo no longer has a circle. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q0R2DEGX2eM&t=105s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=okD6JRi5U4s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FqP2XJIUcI4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JBGcMTXFrYM1 point

CNBC has shops in multiple airports, though they're also just news/convenience stores with branding. I remember seeing one in Charlotte back in 2007.1 point

Nothing will happen Biden said the F-bomb when Obamacare was passed. I say let the F-Bomb fly it isn't that big a deal in my opinion, and I don't get why lots still get offended by the F-Bomb in this day and age broadcaster should be allowed to have the F-Bomb fly in primetime maybe for 10PM to 6AM that is safe harbor but seems that the broadcasters don't use it for some reason.1 point

Looking pretty good. I’m sure they will be happy to have some breathing room given their current situation. My guess is a November reveal [in time for sweeps].1 point

This looks like something that could work, and I like how they're doing this. TEGNA stations across the West are joining forces to bring you a weather-only program called Weather Out West on streaming. Stations featured? KXTV Sacramento KFMB San Diego KING/KONG Seattle KGW Portland KREM/KSKN Spokane KTVB Boise KUSA/KTVD Denver KPNX Phoenix/KMSB Tucson (TEGNA owns the latter and airs KPNX news there too) It appears to be a daily occurrence, but I'm not entirely sure. Today, its KING 5's Ashley Ruiz hosting (and delivering the Seattle forecast) with a national summary from WXIA-TV Atlanta's Julie Martin (remember her? From TWC?).1 point

Over 17.1 million Americans watched a national evening newscast last week. In this fragmented media environment, that is a sizeable audience. What's your source on this? Have you spoken to his successor? Is he set on selling to Nexstar, or will he entertain offers from other groups?? I'll put my sarcasm aside to say, I don't understand this overly dramatic doomsday prediction for WPLG. Dropping a costly network affiliation is a "self-destructive" effort that is a"recipe for disaster" and "the biggest blotch" on Warren Buffett's career (as if he made the decision himself). The people who made this decision at Local 10 have a wealth of data to consider. They know what they are paying to ABC. They are aware of their news production costs, syndication programming costs, and so on. In short, they have made a business decision that leaving a 70-year partnership is the more financially beneficial path. Now, not all business decisions work out for the best. WPLG may very well come to regret this decision. But it may be a success. Remember, you don't have to be #1 to be a financial success - owning all of their inventory sure makes that revenue column balloon. I'm not trying to force anyone to root for WPLG's success or failure. I just think it is a bit extreme to make such a bold prediction of a catastrophic collapse without knowing the business factors and fiscal numbers that went into this decision.1 point

I don’t know. I turned it on at 5 and thought it was the wrong station due to ads.1 point

Yeah they were using tight shots in front of a smaller video wall. The news and weather reports shared the video wall. Some tech issue in the main studio I guess.1 point

Agreed, and it was announced in August 2024 that Maurice was moving to the Evening News. Meaning they’ve had 10 months or more to make a decision. Very odd.1 point
-
Definitely weird for them not to have picked a replacement as it's been about five months. Such a long gap makes it seem like they're hiring from outside, otherwise it should be easy to promote someone from within. I wonder if all the uncertainty around CBS/Paramount and the new CBS Evening News has them keeping a seat warm for Maurice just in case.1 point
-
Will they ever announce a replacement for Maurice? Schedule since he moved to network seems to be Jessica Monday thru Wednesday and then Allan/Dick/Alice on Thursday and Friday. I would hope something more permanent would go into place?1 point

With the leadership being in flux at CBS News, I wouldn’t be surprised if Lonnie’s role is greatly diminished (or eliminated) somewhere down the line. Plus, I don’t get the impression he wants to solely focus on CBS Evening News.1 point

Different folks have different framing, especially if they've transitioned from presenting on a chyron previously to a display behind the back. As long as most of the imagery is seen, that's the most important thing, along with the met's comfort. Also, someone smaller is obviously going to need some zoom so they aren't dwarfed by the background, while a tall man needs their own proportions on-screen.1 point

I was watching FOX-29 a few days ago, and noticed something. Why do most of their meteorologists, except for Sue, stand so close to the camera? On most stations, you can at least see from their stomach up. But on Fox-29, when Scott was on, he was so close, to the point you could only see half of his tie. He was taking up the entire left half of the screen! Tonight I watched FOX-29 again, and Sue was on, but at least I could see down to her stomach.1 point
