  1. Assuming this is true, I don't believe it's the end of their news department - that is, if Bahakel allows it. The CW, as with networks in general these days, only add so much value to a station - which arguably is the actual priority access to certain streaming platforms. They are more than capable to continue operations without a network affiliation provided that Bahakel is on board with it. People can spin this how ever they want, but The CW is not the major player as a network they want people to believe them to be. And sometimes the cost-benefit analysis is just not favorable for continued affiliation. WCCB is the only truly "independent" station (affiliated or not) in Charlotte at this point. All the others are owned by corporate conglomerates. I wish WCCB the best as they navigate this next chapter.

  3. While I agree with the scheduling part and I agree that redeye shifts running well after lunch is not healthy, has it actually been proven that working those hours contributed to the deaths of any of those reporters? I recall Lisa Colagrossi's husband speculated that in her case. In the case of 4 & 4:30 am newscasts I don't mind what Scripps is doing with recorded anchorless shows. Very little new news is actually happening, viewership isn't that high, and its easier on the the talent/photogs.

  4. Mark Johnson, who was dumped from WEWS, has accepted a role with Tegna as a contract meteorologist... https://www.beaconjournal.com/story/news/2025/07/29/mark-johnson-hired-by-wkyc-parent-company-tegna-meteorologist/85418856007/?tbref=hp We all know how this story ends... Once the non-compete expires, cue Mark on WKYC in 3, 2....

  7. Sooner or later, Nexstar is going to put the CW wherever they can in the markets they serve. And if it's not a large company like Gray or Sinclair as the station owner, the contract will be toast when it's up. Here's looking at stations like WFMJ 21.2. An easy move to put the CW on "My YTV" and send MyNetwork packing or off to midnight. And in the markets where Nexstar has O&Oed them as duopolies, they promote the HELL out of CW content during news and sports coverage. Probably worse than Sinclair trying to ram tennis coverage down our throats. The question is, which "other" network is going to walk first? CBS seems the most likely once Skydance finishes driving them into the ground. Perry Sook is turning more into George Newman by each passing day. When will Stanley Spadowski get his own kids show? All they would have to do is sell off WJKT in Jackson, but it's probably in "Failed Station" territory since it's a low-rated FOX affiliate that simulcast's WREG's newscasts. Montgomery would be complicated since they're already a virtual triopoly with WAKA, WBMM and WNCF with SagamoreHill owning the latter.

  8. If this comes to fruition, WCCB is well-suited to become a news-intensive independent station. Somehow, Bahakel soldiers on despite the likely overtures that Tegna or Gray could easily swallow the station as duopoly bait and subsume their news operation.

  9. I'm taking this from a user on RadioDiscussions, so take it with a grain of salt, but here it is, word for word... If this is true, Nexstar gains another CW O&O (in a major market nonetheless), WMYT receives a genuine network affiliation, and WCCB will become an Independent station after 12 years with The CW, and for the first time since 1986.

  11. It's great, however I wish it was possible to select a date to view the day's newscasts, as it takes quite a long time to constantly hit the "show more" button and scroll down to find newscasts from earlier in the month or those that are even older.

  12. Surreal to see the WBBH goes HD in 2007 or 2008 graphics are still in use somewhere in 2025. Perfectly fine graphics for the time, but they aren't hold on to for 15+ years great graphics either.

  14. I don’t have an answer but Sam hasn’t been on the 6am news in several months and they stop playing the talent opens after 6am. I think he still appears on the 10am regularly.

  16. I got confirmation that they're switching out the monitor bank behind home base for a seamless wall, the last of the O&Os to do so. They're still playing with the lighting, but the new larger green screen space in the secondary studio looks quite nice. The average viewer likely wouldn't notice.

  18. Are they going to add another Meteorologist as Sam is on GMA all the time lately? I don't really like having the morning meteorologist staying on air until 1pm after being on air since 4:30am. Schedules like this contributed to the deaths of Lisa Colagrossi, Katherine Creag and Elise Finch.

  19. At 11am today, Val and Terrell anchored from a temporary desk set up but Mark McGinnis still did weather from the studio. It's interesting as it is almost 10 years with this set and it doesn't look like an overhaul is likely soon.

  23. Cablevision & LIN TV then owner of WOOD TV did battle quite a bit in the 90s which started in 93 for a few months they couldn't reach a deal wasn't until closer to Super Bowl 28 when they agreed to a new deal. I didn't have Cablevision at the time I had Adelphia Comm before I moved in 96 only without WOOD TV for 6 hours returned at 6AM in fall of 93. Then in Jan 96 WOOD TV was taken off Cablevision once again they found loophole and that was returned just before Super Bowl 30, 97 was off for the whole year and I had to watch WOOD TV on rabbit ears put a crappy cable network in its place called Romance Classic UGH, it wasn't even about retrans it was about putting the weather radar and the weather radio in the background which became general entertainment channel WXSP in 1999. Suckyvision always seem to get a deal done right before you guessed it Super Bowl 2 days before SB32 otherwise had to watch it on rabbit ears and Cablevision didn't put the weather channel on the system as LIN wanted that on basic and Cablevision didn't want to put it on basic. May 2001 was when Charter Spectrum put WXSP in the lineup which was UPN at the time and airing Tigers, Pistons, & Redwings as well. WWMT wanted to do a news update which was on Headline News at the bottom of every half hour with their agreement with Cablevision which was taken off I believe in 2002 on Headline News.

  24. I'll second. We're seeing massive attrition of qualified journalists and an industry bowing to fascistic autocrats, but we want to continue to debate time/temp bugs. People, we have a significant editorial independence crisis on our hands! What the actual f*ck?!

  29. @Viper550 flagged it in the "2019 NFL Season" thread, so I'm spinning it off into its own thread. Fox is debuting a new graphics package for Super Bowl LIV. Hopefully they learned their lesson from Super Bowl LI.

  31. For those outside of Central Indiana, this move, like the one from ABC to NBC is big. The Indy 500 is seen as a state holiday. Trust me, the people at Fox59 are very happy right now about this. When WTHR (NBC) got it from RTV6 (ABC), they were very happy and started planning right away. Now, the blackout is still probably in tact and will stay that way from now until the end of days. How are the people at WTHR feeling? Not happy. for a number of years, the big three network stations in Indy had a share in The Month of May. WISH-TV had the One America 500 Mini Marathon and Indy 500 Parade, RTV6 with the race (tape delay), and WTHR with the awards banquet the next night. Shortly after WISH said they were losing CBS, they also lost the rights to the Mini and Parade to WTHR. I should add the Mini Marathon and Parade are outside of IndyCar and the IMS. The awards banquet is also something outside of IndyCar and the IMS. Unless Fox59/CBS4 make a move for those, don’t expect those to change.

  33. USA is among the channels that will be spun off to Versant. If anything, in my opinion, NBCU should just reconsider keeping Golf Channel and making it into an all sports network.

  34. Is KGUN still a mix of live and pre-recorded newscasts? The Scripps model is painful, you’re right. I wonder if it would suck less if the flow was sped up a bit and the music was better. Probably not.

  35. I'm surprised that Bill Steffen didn't want to start Michigan Weather Network since he is a legend after all he now has his own website kinda wish he would still do text and not all video from YouTube or have a mix of both in my opinion. Kinda surprised that Wood TV still has his blog up from 7 months ago I thought they would get rid of it.

  36. Then why did NBC get rid of NBCSN in 2021 to bring it back from the dead maybe because of the NBA rights deal. Why not just use USA wasn't that why they shutdown NBCSN in 2021?

  38. I know this was posted via a reply in another thread, but I feel this bit of news deserves its own. IndyCar moves to Fox Sports in 2025 after 16 seasons with NBC. Fox now has Daytona 500 and Indy 500 (yahoo.com) This also means the Indy 500 will be the latest big event to be added to Fox's roster, as they have rights to the World Series, the Belmont Stakes, Super Bowls LIX, LXIII, LXVII, and the Daytona 500 to name a few.

  39. Fox will have the doubleheader as they also air the Coke500 the same day as the Indy500. Has CBS ever got the rights to Indy500, I know ABC had it for decades before NBC a few years ago and now Fox in 2025.
