WPLG executed their independence better than WANF will. The former at least has the Merv Griffin Fun Hour and Live with Kelly & Mark on their schedule.4 points

Another day, according to OnTVTonight. It looks like WANF will have weekend news from 8-10am, 5-7pm, and 10-11:30pm. Obviously, it may be different depending on when the weekend after that may look like, but right now, this is what it has. Sunday, August 17th: 07:00-08:00 AM: Local News Live Sunday 08:00-10:00 AM: ANF News LIVE Weekend 10:00-10:30 AM: Inside Edition Weekend 10:30-11:00 AM: Positively America 11:00-11:30 AM: On The Record 11:30AM-12:00PM: Paid Program 12:00-12:30 PM: Investigate TV+ Weekend 12:30-01:30 PM: Opry 01:30-02:00 PM: The Song 02:00-03:00 PM: Paid Programming 03:00-05:00 PM: To Be Announced 05:00-07:00 PM: ANF News LIVE (this means Atlanta will have their very first weekend newscast at 5:00pm). 07:00-08:00 PM: Uncovered: ANF Investigates (x2) 08:00-08:30 PM: Investigate TV+ Weekend (repeat) 08:30-10:30 PM: WNBA - Atlanta Dream (ANF is the local flagship for it, thanks to PSN) at Golden State Valkyries 10:30-11:30 PM: ANF News LIVE 11:30PM-12:00AM: Paid Program 12:00-01:00 AM: Uncovered: ANF Investigates (x2; repeat) So as you can see, a little mix of everything from news to music to investigations to even live sports on this particular night. I'm excited to see what Monday's schedule looks like, which will give us an indication as to how much more weekday news WANF will be producing.4 points

Finally, what y'all have been waiting for and curious to see, just like me... the weekday schedule for WANF and it is about to pump out a WHOLE LOT more news. Yes, its OnTVTonight again as my resource for this. Monday, August 18th, WANF's first full day of a news-heavy independent schedule: 04:00-07:00 AM: ANF Early Edition (they're expanding to 4am to compete against WSB) 07:00-10:00 AM: ANF A.M. LIVE (the 9am goes back to an hour) 10:00-11:00 AM: ATL LIVE (new timeslot and expands to an hour) 11:00-11:30 AM: Inside Edition (the new episode will remain on WPCH) 11:30AM-12:00PM: Investigate TV+ 12:00-01:00 PM: ANF News LIVE at 12 Noon (expands to an hour now that it doesn't have to worry about CBS Daytime anymore) 01:00-02:00 PM: ATL LIVE (repeat) 02:00-03:00 PM: Local News LIVE 03:00-04:00 PM: ANF News LIVE at 3:00 (going back to an hour on WANF proper though its been that way on WPCH for quite some time now ever since Investigate TV+ premiered on syndie) 04:00-06:30 PM: ANF News LIVE 06:30-07:00 PM: ANF First Alert Weather Extra (yep, they're getting their own 30-minute all-weather program just like a handful of other Gray sisters out there, i.e. KCTV and WBRC) 07:00-07:30 PM: ANF News LIVE at 7:00 07:30-09:00 PM: The Big Bang Theory (x3) 09:00-10:00 PM: ANF News LIVE at 9:00 (the primetime newscast it once had, for WPCH, is back and on WANF proper) 10:00-11:30 PM: ANF News LIVE (no word if WPCH will continue to simulcast WANF's 6-9am, noon, 3, and 10pm newscasts) 11:30PM-12:00AM: ANF Sports Overtime (new to WANF proper but just like what KTVK/KPHO is doing with The Extra Point plus WANF has done this on streaming for some time too) 12:00-12:30 AM: Young Sheldon 12:30-01:00 AM: The Conners 01:00-01:30 AM: ANF News LIVE at 11:00 (repeat) 01:30-02:00 AM: ANF Sports Overtime (repeat) 02:00-03:00 AM: Georgia High School Sports Daily (from PSN: Peachtree Sports Network) 03:00-04:00 AM: Law and Order: SVU3 points

WANF, Your Official Shovelware Station!! Seriously... they knew this was coming and this is the best they could do??? Gray might as well have moved Peachtree Sports to 46.1. Would have saved them a lot of time and trouble. What a freaking waste.2 points
-
They could turn it into a satellite of WDCW or WUSA, and technically run all 3 stations on it for the benefit of Western Maryland. And the irony of the old WDVM calls coming under common ownership... Plot twist: Tegna could end up trading out WTSP and others like KHOU to CBS. But what would CBS trade out in return?2 points

WTVJ has released a promo branding themselves as the stable station despite the changes in Miami tv. Ironically in the 80s and 90s they were the center of instability with the affiliation and channel dial swaps. From IG, hopefully you can open: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DNDWs7WuQcB/?igsh=eGZiemNrZTU5NGpr2 points

I remember what a mess it was when they merged KWGN with KDVR... Not eager for that sort of thing to happen again!2 points

I'm not sure a strongly-worded letter written by Newsmax is going to sway many opinions in Congress and at the FCC. What ulterior motives could Newsmax have for wanting a bunch of full-power TV station licenses to be available at low cost? Keep in mind, the FCC's mission is to regulate the wireless spectrum, not business and commerce. The cap exists to prevent a company from monopolizing available, finite radio spectrum. The stupid simple solution to this issue (which I suspect we might see play out if this merger is attempted and fails) is to make that work differently. Sinclair and Nexstar have been pushing ATSC 3.0 datacasting quite heavily, to the point that datacasting is often the only time ATSC 3 comes up in their quarterly and annual investor reports. All they need to do is make the argument that, because the spectrum can now be used for multiple purposes, they are no longer "television stations" but "data transmitters". Multiple stations sharing one transmitter is already happening (both "sides" of ATSC3 lighthouses, post-repack channel sharing), and the FCC has not really addressed the multiple questions this raises. If everyone is on one frequency anyways, what exactly is the FCC regulating? The next step is to decouple the transmitters from the broadcasters themselves (hey remember EdgeBeam Wireless?). The UK has been doing this since 1997, and I believe most, if not all, of the transmitters in the country are owned by Arqiva. The UK Government still regulates the use of the "Muxes" on these transmitters, but the US has a pesky "Constitution" that would probably make that difficult for our government to do. It would likely end up with "let the free market decide", and pitched as "anybody" can now operate a "TV station" over these transmitters, as long as there is available bandwidth, and you can pay for it. Not enough transmitters? Oh well! Should have formed a consortium and bid on the spectrum that was freed up when every television broadcaster consolidated onto 3-4 frequencies in each market. We're kind of already doing this. What are cellular networks if not wireless data providers, available to anyone who can afford a phone and the subscription to use it? We don't regulate what websites can be accessed on cellular networks, so why would we regulate datacasting differently? Something is going to give, eventually. Whether it be the scenario above, or the FCC/congress/etc. just throwing up their hands and saying it's pointless when all this is available online, anyways.2 points

This is kind of disappointing, on what world does Atlanta need an hour and a half of TBBT? Something smarter would have been to make the 6:00 an hour long, and move the weather show to 7:30, and then air an hour of LNL at 8. I personally would not complain if they go the WPLG route and have a ''world news'' newscast, possibly at 7 or 8?1 point
-
The schedule was just as I thought it would be; KVVU/Arizona's Family East, though with some more sports programming. They have a successful template in those stations (even back to Meredith), so I think it's worth a try in Atlanta. Be relieved there's not a single Byron Allen program on it at the very least.1 point

Local News Live is a Gray streaming news channel that has since expanded to become an OTA news program on Gray stations that decide to air it.1 point

Welcome to visual radio, where you get news, talk, and sports on your OTA TV. WANF's schedule is showing us that it is starting to happen, and it is abysmal.1 point

Most people don't care because, in their view, they've already long since replaced whatever local TV brought to the table with streaming and the internet. I also assume this is ultimately why the FCC has checked out of regulating all this consolidation. They probably don't see much of a future in local linear TV either, just a few sclerotic companies haggling over what's becoming a razor-thin slice of the pie.1 point

I can't believe that people are under this belief that a court ruling will stop this when this regime has purposely ignored all court rulings they don't like. Let alone this false hope a decimated and useless FTC and Patel/Toasterhead DOJ will do anything. It's a fait accompli and exercise in right-wing political patronage. The worst part won't be the shuttering of newsrooms wholesale, it'll be when the remaining newsrooms will be weaponized as a front for far-right propaganda, which Uncle Perry will gladly engage in.1 point
-
If this gets approved, they're absolutely gonna force DC News Now on WUSA. And I think they're going to try to find some way to keep WDVM since it's not technically a DC station (and judging by the recent format change of it's morning show, people are probably not flocking to it).1 point

In the Hampton Roads market, Nexstar owns WAVY (NBC) and WVBT (Fox) and Tegna owns WVEC (ABC). I have no idea how the three stations rate, but I'm guessing it's a more complicated situation than what could happen here in Hartford-New Haven.1 point

Good points. I hadn't considered the possibility that Nexstar and Tegna would find a way to make situations like this work. Also, as someone who believes we're eventually going to start seeing broadcast stations disappearing, Hartford-New Haven may actually prove to be an example what I expect to see in the next few years.1 point

It seems like OnTVTonight has finally given us a first glimpse into what that will be like. Granted, its only next Saturday that's available for now but still... something. 07:00-08:00 AM: Local News Live Saturday 08:00-10:00 AM: ANF News LIVE Weekend 10:00AM-10:00PM: High School Football (Four matches back-to-back-to-back-to-back; they've done this for years though, mainly on WPCH, so no surprise here) 10:00-11:30 PM: ANF News LIVE 11:30PM-12:00AM: Investigate TV+ Weekend1 point

It will be the messiest acquisition ever. At least 2/3 of them overlap, many of them with triopolies or quadropolies created. In Little Rock, it forms a quintopoly. I see no way they would be allowed to own THAT much, even though I am sure they will keep quite a few duopolies. The latest Gray moves do, interestingly, help somewhat in that the triopolies they have created can become trade pieces in some markets to possibly help both parties - to an extent. But there's going to almost certainly be a challenge.1 point

And when do we get the magical assurance from the FCC (or our lord and savior DJT) that all of this forthcoming consolidation is legal?1 point

Little public service announcement. Please don't report posts that you simply don't like. That's an abuse of the feature. Don't let it happen again, and I hope to not see anyone else report a certain post in this thread. No rules are being broken by having a differing opinion.1 point

"wind-down of its operations" and cut a majority of its jobs by the end of September" commeuppance, as they say. PBSers snickered and thumbed their noses at local newsers losing their jobs bEcAusE tHeY d0n't d0 rEaL nEwS and serve the cuhmuneteeeh... now the chickens have come home to roost. "Much health" as we would say in Bulgaria all the people bitching about PBS/NPR could just donate, they pay $10 for tub of "latte" every day we've been lectured about how essential PBS is, if it were essential PBS now won't have to lay anyone off just like they didn't during the 2008 crash when stations like WTVJ were almost wiped off the map1 point

The start of something BADASS for KCNC. Around the time KCNC's parent company, GE, acquired NBC—of which Channel 4 was affiliated—KCNC became an NBC-owned station and, notably, the first TV station in Colorado to be owned by a major network. This transformation was marked by two initial news theme packages featuring the "This is Colorado" motif: Image IV (for First News at 4:30 p.m.) and Image V (NewsCenter 4 at 5 p.m. and 10 p.m.). A key aspect of this launch was the accompanying promotional campaign, which included KCNC announcer Suzy Nelson singing during the promo—definitely a bonus! KCNC fully embraced the partnership and collaboration with Denver-based Jerome Gilmer, even after NBC sold KCNC to CBS in 1995. The news packages featured the KCNC 'This is Colorado' music logo. One specific package from 1993, titled Image IX - Altitude, included the NBC chimes, which was fitting since KCNC was nearing the end of its tenure as an NBC-owned affiliate. However in 2003, KCNC had to discontinue its relationship with Gilmer to comply with the CBS O&O Mandate regarding music packages and logos. CBS required KCNC to use CBS O&O news themes, starting with the Newstime package from 615 Music, alongside its sister stations KCBS in Los Angeles and WBZ in Boston. Subsequently, KCNC began using the "Enforcer" theme by Frank Gari.1 point

Not to invalidate his claims, but he's making some pretty serious accusations. Sounds like he wasn't happy in his role (which I'm guessing was as a morning reporter??) and wanted to move up. Anchor slots (or even anchor fill-in roles) often go to station vets and/or those with a lot more experience than he has. If he was looking to move up the ladder, WGN was the wrong station for him.1 point

This is thread-worthy in itself. While it's not the end of PBS and NPR, it could very well be unwinding the network of stations through the elimination of federal funding and oversight of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/corporation-public-broadcasting-begin-shutting-operations/story?id=124284902 Basically the result will be any surviving "Public Broadcasting" stations that rely on viewer and state/local support. PBS will likely survive in name only and through their ongoing member stations. Are we great yet?0 points

This is not good and very sad actually, this literally could happen and no one is gonna care. The average American citizen may not notice a difference there not ya know interested in tv ownership like us but this would effect them. If stations are sold it’s gonna be stations that are a shadow of a bigger station they might get sold. But you’re talking about acquiring stations and shutting down competition because one of those stations in higher rated that the other. I’m thinking about doing something personally to warn people about this I don’t like this. Yesh I’m gonna try to explain this to the average viewers how bad this will be if it happens. I been thinking about writing a book about tv stations it just when I try to explain the concepts to myself it sounds confusing to me I mean I understand it completely, but I just don’t know how I’m gonna explain this in a series of TikTok videos and not confuse people. It’s like a math professor who sucks at explaining math concepts to you and make it hard to understand.0 points
