I just saw something on KTVD's schedule. First off, I didn't know that KUSA added another hour of news at 9am on KTVD. Then, I further looked at the schedule, and it looks like KUSA is about to copy KDVR. Starting Monday, Sept. 8th, KUSA will add an extra two hours of weekday news on KTVD from 10am-12pm. In other words, if you watch KUSA's news solely on KTVD, then you'll be able to watch the whole block from 4:30am-12 Noon, just like how KDVR does it.2 points

The forthcoming tragedy in Cleveland is when WKYC is integrated into WJW. WJW has lived off the fumes of Tribune since 2019 with the set and graphics they were gifted at the last minute, and still exist today. Yes, they have all of the typical Nexstar garbage like "Remarkable Women" and "Your Local Election Headquarters" but they never got fully Nex-star-red. Other markets like Indianapolis have already shed their Tribune-ness, and even went through different generations of the Nexstar looks (WXIN) since the Nexstar merger. And it's still hard to believe WISH is still going with ANOTHER active Nexstar look! Hopefully it's not something boring like "Ozarks News First" which repurposes the ABC package on CBS, FOX AND their MyNetwork stations. Only difference is the station logo bug slapped on it.1 point

His bio at WSVN.com is gone so that should tell you something. Totally unrelated to that... More retirement news: KETV's Rob McCartney signing off at the end of the year and retiring after 43 years in the industry (all of it in Nebraska), the last 33 at KETV. https://www.ketv.com/article/ketv-rob-mccartney-announces-retirement/659241421 point

Here is KXII’s new logo first alert weather branding and GrayOne graphics as of the 4pm newscast they haven’t aired the new logo or full graphics (only a few on the weather segment) but have changed them on the website kxii.com. Well tomorrow is the date of the debut of the new logo and GrayOne graphics. https://www.facebook.com/share/r/1B9bGYEyqM/?mibextid=wwXIfr1 point

From the comments on her instagram, it sounds like she is going to NYC and will remain with ABC on the network level. She referenced an apple (as in the Big Apple) and said we would still be able to see her on TV.1 point

I just don't like the early and long hours as it contributed to the early deaths of Lisa Colagrossi, Katherine Creag and Elise Finch.1 point

Bah, per usual, they botched it... Looks horrendous.. I hope this is just a tease and will be fixed1 point

I actually miss both. I even miss the days when TBS had Braves games as well as WCW Wrestling. As for WGN, fans of Chicago teams out of market could get some Cubs, White Sox, and Bulls games without having to pay out the ass for a league subscription package to follow them, while the same could not be said for Braves games on TBS. It's sad that those days are long gone.1 point

I miss Superstation WGN. We had that one for about a year after we moved to NH from the Chicago area, only for it to be replaced with VH-1.1 point

Looks like KDVR could be getting the new Nexstar FOX graphics soon. For now, it's just an updated open. Video Credit: Broadcast News & Sports Time Capsule via YouTube1 point

TBN is countersuing, claiming among other things that Dr. Phil Primetime isn't the continuation of the syndicated series that McGraw supposedly promised would air on the channel. (An interesting point, given that Primetime was much more politics-oriented than the lifestyle-focused syndie program; Wikipedia considers them separate shows.)1 point

3rd? Don't they outperform CNN? They kept the MS in MSNBC after Microsoft left due to brand recognition. MSNBC was so ingrained in the media lexicon that it would've been like Twitter rebranding to X. In that same vein I understand Versant keeping "MSN" is their name. They want the public to immediately recognize MSNOW as the successor of MSNBC. I was initially skeptical of the name, but I can tolerate it. Agreed, the logo is . Versant probably paid consultants and this is the best they could've done! I'm all for NBC distancing itself from that toxic partisan cable network, but if CNBC is keeping it's name, MSNBC might as well. We're already supposed to ignore that MS originally means Microsoft so they can keep that up for the NBC part. CNBC is already covered with Consumer News & Business Channel. I'm surprised the star of their network coverage didn't suggest "MSDNC" as a rebrand.1 point
-
Good lord, you're a condescending know-it-all. I honestly wouldn't give a rat's ass what they call MSNBC once Versant is officially its own company...it can be the Furry Network for all I care. I just merely offered an idea, and that's it. Save your hostile attitude for someone else.1 point

She debuted today. Nothing groundbreaking, just plugged her into the current opens.1 point

The deal likely sets in stone any branding standards that the Fox affiliates have to abide by. Aside from stations like WBRC, many will have a tough time trying to rebrand like many of Gray's other stations.1 point

she wasn’t laid off - that would imply budget cuts and her position eliminated. Her position — general assignment reporter— was recently listed as open, as was the position of weekend anchor/reporter. It sounds more like she and WABC couldn’t come to an agreement on a new contract and/or she was told the anchor position was not something she would be offered.1 point

80 or so years in is anybody really confused on where to find what channel or what’s gonna be there when they turn it on? Honestly I think the network names and logos in the local branding is way worse. Most of the people watching are 902 and their dials are rusted on whatever channel they prefer.1 point

I guess Scripps doesn't want to continue paying royalties to Cox-Apollo for use of the "Action News" trademark.1 point
-
I really hate how generic Scripps newscasts are known as now; WTMJ had its branding as "Today's TMJ4" built in for so long, so having to hear "TMJ4 News" instead is so grating. I also assume since WXPX is now programmed as "The Spot" they needed to drop the specific ABC branding to avert confusion (and avoid absurd newscast titles like ABC Action News at 9 on The Spot Tampa Bay 66), along with the Cox branding royalties mentioned in that thread. ETA - Thanks for bringing up WTOG (aka "Tampa Bay 44") in that thread @TheRolyPoly; on top of that and "10 Tampa Bay", it's both clear there's a dearth of creativity and confusion among brand managers in that area.1 point

nah. I recall reading interviews with Sinclair reps and their main talking point was always about how 3.0 will give the ability to localize advertising and being able to see TVs tuned in so they can do ad attribution, which broadcast admittedly needs. Now they're mad that Lon, from Lon.TV, and AntennaMan whipped up the 3.0 early adopters against encryption, telling the FCC they were astrotufers . Even had SiliconDust HDHomerun, which sponsored Lon a couple times, blocked from getting certification to decrypt 3.0 channels. retrans $$$. For now. They might make OTA 4K paid given that they already encrypt the signal, and conditional access with subscriptions is baked into 3.01 point

They don't seem interested in doing anything to win consumers over. I never hear anything about one of these station groups launching a diginet suited to showing off the 4K and Atmos or whatever. A Discovery HD Theater sort of thing.1 point

Is there proof that Skydance/New Paramount doesn't want CBS? I can see them selling off the O&O stations, but they might see the point in holding on to the network itself for a while. As for Nexstar being the only available buyer... well, I'll believe it when I see it.1 point

If approved: Lafayette is a tiny one-station market. Terre Haute, Rockford, Lafayette, Fort Wayne and Evansville are Gray/Nexstar markets, while Columbus-Tupelo and Montgomery are Gray/someone else (that said, Morris and Bahakel would be prime for Nexstar). Huntsville remains a 3-station operation, while Paducah would be Gray and a local owner (as long as Paxson doesn't walk away, since Nexstar would probably love WPSD). Probably because that would leave them with the #1 and #2 stations in the market and likely would create bigger hassles than a #1 and #3 station acquisition. Also, someone else might be shopping that station like Scripps. What this means for the three new markets: Indiana - Only missing Indianapolis. That will be a difficult one barring a trade. Mississippi - Only missing Greenville. They missed the chance with The Delta News, but if Deltavision doesn't complete the acquisition, Gray could jump on it for peanuts.1 point

In the Scripps swap, Gray exited a couple of markets in the West as well.1 point
-
I just noticed something... Gray is only picking up stations in the Midwest or South. NO stations in the west. This means KDRV, KEZI, and KHSL/KNVN won't be sold, though I'm puzzled as to why not them. Gray isn't in any of those markets.1 point

Gray + Allen would result in a NBC/ABC/Fox/CW triopoly in Fort Wayne, right next to their incoming Big Four WLIO/WOHL duop in Lima. Plus it'd marry WJRT with WNEM and WCOV/WIYC with WSFA. Given how badly Allen ran those stations into the ground, integrating them might be an easier process than you'd think. And thanks to pure political favoritism at the hands of hacks Brendan Carr and Olivia Trusty (let alone the disemboweling of the DOJ and FTC), this and all other deals will clear with total ease.1 point

looks like FOX rolled all their cable nets retrans fees and called it FOXOne. Great for those into sports I guess but my Disney+ and Hulu no ads subscription is $20/month. lack of money as we saw recently. Definitely no cash to start clean from zero with investors who can stomach losing money for 5 years hoping it sticks. Add Byron Allen as the CEO and you have a death timer Spanish TV also isn't raking the big bucks either. Univision was sold in 2020, after 14 years of no losses, for the $10B debt it had, plus $800 mil in cash for 64% equity, valuing it at $1.2B - 91% loss of value. It sold in 2006 to big private equity for $13.5 billion, the future of Spanish TV. AmericaTeVe - imploded after their sugar daddy bailed on them and took what he paid for with him. SBS - sold MegaTV three years ago for $64 million but the buyer reneged unable to scrounge up the cash. Telemundo has NBCUniversal to prop them up but even WSCV can barley make more than WSFL-TV after 20 years, and being #1 in Miami. Jorge Ramos is only who he is because the network invested in him over time. Another one of those things that are not coming back, especially if more talent is doing well for themselves just sitting on their kitchen table talking at a camera. Judge Brown is enjoying the podcast circuit, though he probably had potential to be one of the star talking heads in his younger years but instead chose 2-3 months of a work a year for the same paycheck. Candace is doing 1 mil views on a bad day and $$$$$. Shannon Sharpe got his 2 million subs on YT too. Stephen A Smith also doesn't need an employer though he's on SiriusXM.1 point

We need a black Telemundo, with news, shows I don’t know about sports. I never watch anything Byron does keep in mind he killed the only black news outlet and merged it into TheGrio, saying we need a “good news channel”, I could rant about older black people for hours anyways we need a news outlet targeted toward us or a digital multicast network that has both news and shows. We need a Jorge Ramos (like the former Univision anchor) but for black people we could name him Laquerious Holt lol. We could have commentators like Dr. Umar Johnson, and Tariq Nasheed, and Judge Joe Brown, Paris Denard. but no Roland Martin (I don’t like him).1 point

My takeaways from your analysis... It sounds like WDRB's news department will be a goner. That stinks, especially for folks like Candyce Clift, Valerie Chinn, Scott Reynolds (going back to his old home, if it happens), Marc Weinberg, and others. WLKY is #1? With WDRB, WAVE, and WHAS in that order behind 'LKY? I mean, its great analysis from you, but man. I hope this is one of those few times where Gray divests WDRB just to keep a fourth news department operational in the market (not counting SN1 KY, of course).1 point

Watching dayside NewsNation and it's getting to be very clear that they barely ever need the studio or even a mic, because their anchors never get to appear on screen unless they're just handing off to the pundit to blather on, and usually it's in a quad box to add insult to injury while the same video loops over and over for ten minutes. It's absurd; LiveNow and Local News Now do a much better job showing off their talent during their shows, and I couldn't name one of those folks in a lineup. They'll only show the talent on this channel that they overpaid for to get ratings that are much worse than the edited movies WGN America they showed in primetime a decade back. Sorry Markie, Marnie and Nichole (not sorry to any of the talent that saw the writing on the wall two years back and fled). This network outside of primetime can literally be handled by their local stations, and it's no wonder to see why cable providers really don't want to have to carry it in order to carry a local Nexstar station. They'd be better off just airing various WGN, WPIX and KTLA newscasts and probably get better ratings for it to boot.1 point

In a story that I can't link to, due to the website not allowed to be linked on here, Scripps says that the implementation of the new package will be "aggressive", based on technical considerations... Also they claim that audience feedback has been "beyond expectations"... So we shall see what "aggressive" brings us in the upcoming weeks/months...1 point

Telemundo Deportes is good but it can’t compare to Univision Deportes which has all the soccer matches.1 point

KTVI and KDVR would be great candidates for this package... Nexstar has some big FOX stations in larger markets that would make them stand out1 point

And it makes sense considering their overall competition is a Scripps disasterpiece in WRTV and post-Dispatch WTHR stuck in Tegnaization. Both stations have to deal with whatever corporate foists upon them, while WTTV is just bonus ratings and revenue and WXIN is pretty much left alone by Nexstar and has a solid news operation and coverage across the day. It's pretty much a "Luigi does nothing and wins" market as the others flail around. Same with Miami; outside WPLG and the Spanish stations, WTVJ and WFOR are subject to the whims of whoever's in New York. I will say though I'm impressed by WDAF's new presentation; the older one was fine but just never felt real cohesive, while the new package just feels big-market and more defined with a full theme. ETA - Forgot to account in WISH-TV which is fine, but being associated with Allen stations outstate trickles down to them and as an independent, they can only do so much to stay competitive. But at least they are compared to WRTV.1 point
