Yeah this desk is from BDI. It mimics the 96 Rather desk. It’s smaller. We had the same desk at my former station. BDI did the 96 set and the Couric set. I think this desk was used for Up to the Minute.3 points

Interesting developments I was hoping it was the other way around WABC would adopt KABC variation of the Circle 7 logo. I like KABC logo I’ll miss it.3 points

Maybe if he actually pushed back on the blatant lies and misinformation. And it’s not remotely childish to point out the SecDef has zero qualifications for the role. That hardly makes him unique in this regime, to be sure. But someone who never was in a command position and has expertise you could fit in a thimble should be scrutinized, not treated like a buddy at a bar.3 points

What is this I saw that Tony commented on a social media post that he claims he will surpass Cronkite? Edit: Found it https://www.thedailybeast.com/maga-coded-cbs-anchor-tony-dokoupil-ripped-for-walter-cronkite-jab/2 points

Just info here. 1991-2006 CBS Evening News theme is the longest-running CBS Evening News theme, lasting for 14 years, 9 months, and 25 days (November 11, 1991 to September 5, 2006) and most remembered CBS News theme at the time (it was also used by CBS Morning News during similar timeframe). It is the theme that associated with the majority of Dan Rather era as the anchor of the newscast (although 1987-1991 theme also associated with Rather's era, their usage were much short-lived than 1991 one). So, if anyone watching Dan Rather's tenure as the anchor of the program during 1991 to 2005, anyone will remember this theme. It is composed by Patterson, Walz and Fox Music Productions. Although it contains the signature melody of the 1987 theme by Trivers/Myers, all the other music is original. Fun Fact: In the first six years of Dan Rather's tenure as the anchor of CBS Evening News (1981 to 1987), CBS News adhered to a policy, imposed by then-CBS President Frank Stanton, that prohibited the use of music. To distinguish itself and demonstrate that it used original footage, CBS chose to forgo music entirely.2 points

I believe the prohibition was on lists of the "Here's a list of stations" variety, not specifically bulleted lists. More importantly, though, that wasn't a list. It was a timeline in outline form. As far as I'm concerned, the prohibition doesn't apply.2 points

Agreed. Neither are a major deal breaker for me though. The L3 is about what I expect for CBS at this point, but wish they would reduce the CBSEN logo by a third or half. Most people watching know what they are watching. NBC does the logo well by rotating the Peacock, NN, and full Nightly logo... CBS could learn a thing or two there.2 points

KGO 100% would've used the "Eyewitness News" branding if it weren't for CBS O&O KPIX using that in the past.1 point

I know there are much, much, much more important things to be concerned about with this broadcast, but is that wrapping paper or some sort of tape stuck to Tony's laptop?1 point

Here's hoping Chris Ruddy and Newsmax kill this deal. https://www.ftvlive.com/sqsp-test/2026/1/5/newsmax-tries-blocking-nexstar It's one of the few (if not the only way) I'd ever agree with them. And even their delusion towards Nexstar as part of the "liberal media" when in fact Perry Sook and Nexstar is trying to be the next Fox News or NewsMax mogul, we're still better off with Tegna surviving another day as opposed to being swallowed up by Nexstar. Let the next suitor have their shot at Tegna, or just let them die off in the open market.1 point

Yeah, that was a bizarre story choice for an inaugural broadcast. Hoping they eventually play the climactic portion of the Rather theme.1 point

Now THIS is a news desk! Seriously, hoping that the one they found at a Savers and refurbished with $20 of supplies was just temporary since they thought they had a few more days before the new set would be used. By the way- how much did the John/Maurice set cost to be used for only a year? This is not what anyone in America wants to see on their TV during the dinner hour.1 point

That sax rendition of 'Good News' during the NBA scores at 1 hour in of the WEWS clip is pretty epic1 point

Positives: Loving the Dan Rather era score, headlines theme and logo font's returns. They've constantly recycled the *1987-1991 theme so I'm glad that this lives again. I hope CBS News Special Reports get this music again. When Tony is eventually replaced, I hope they keep it. Love using the newsroom as the broadcast set, an updated version of the Dan Rather era. Tony's desk looks like Rather's. I'd say Tony's set looks even better than the sets used by Nora and Maurice/John. CONS: L3 graphics are boxy and ugly. The format is a copy of the competition. Everything is breaking news in the intro, but at least everything in the A block wasn't "Breaking". The camera seemed to bounce whenever it came back to Tony's main shot on set. Overall, I'd say Maurice and John's broadcast was superior, but I do prefer the set and news theme on Tony's show. I wonder what the CBS evening news with Nate Burleson will look like in 2027 Even ET is leading with Tony's debut.1 point

I hope they're not stupid enough to dissolve the partnership with WPXI to supply news to FOX 53 WPGH. But Sinclair's gonna Sinclair so they can air their own garbage content over local news. We're coming to the 20 year mark of their 86-ing of the "News Central" model that stripped away some news departments, including WPGH's.1 point

Tony wasn't sure at one point which story was next and it seemed to take forever to get clarification. He drew attention to it. Ever since that moment, he's seemed very flustered, even two blocks later, still speaking very quickly, tripping over his words, and even getting Dr. Jon LaPook to speak pretty quickly. For the second block, they returned for Tony to read just one story, then tease the same story they had teased in the first tease. I get that they were planning on doing this broadcast from San Francisco until news dictated two days ago that they do news today but I was expecting a more polished product for the big debut. Edit: Bafflingly, they closed with a segment called "Only in America," a story read live by Tony, about something a small town did to raise money last winter. Last winter! And we thought the Evening News of 2025 was taking their time to report stories...1 point

Reverting to the Dan Rather era music is certainly a choice. Maybe, Tony's replacement in a couple years will revive the James Horner composed Katie Couric 2006-2011 music.1 point

I'll break this down... Whatever it was before Meredith owned them... WHAE from 1971-1977 (CBN; Independent) WANX from 1977-1984 (CBN; Independent) WGNX from 1984-1998 (Tribune from 1984-1998; Independent until 1994, then CBS), the most famous era before all the Meredith stuff came through. Meredith's ownership... WGNX from 1998-2000 (CBS Atlanta - WGNX 46) WGCL from 2000-2021 (CBS Atlanta, Clear TV, CBS 46 - Atlanta's NewsChannel, CBS 46, CBS Atlanta, CBS 46, you know the mess) Gray's ownership... WGCL from 2021-2022 (CBS 46 during the transitional phase) WANF from 2022-present (Atlanta News First; CBS until 2025, back to being an Independent) I know... no bullet lists, but a point had to be made. I hope you enjoyed this little history lesson.1 point

My wish for 2026 is for a station to build a set and not stick a desk 5 feet in front of a LED wall with a static city skyline background. Just one station. Please. I beg you.1 point

I'm pretty sure that was a virtual set at KPIX designed from the outgoing look. I would imagine we'll see a different look tomorrow.1 point

That seems generous. Me, I look forward to CBSEN being completely and utterly buried in the ratings by ABC, NBC, CNN, MS NOW, Fox News, NewsNation, Newsmax, OAN, PBS NewsHour, BBC World News America, local stations, and every flavor of Spectrum News 1.1 point

Only spent two years at "WLNE" but this week is Kristina Shalhoup's last. It looks like the last of the consolidation on the weather side between it and WJAR is about to be complete. https://www.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=1242958934316103&id=1000580602398870 points

The anchor of the CBS Evening News actually said "Marco Rubio, we salute you!" at the end of the broadcast tonight. The "story" was an "Only In America" puff piece on the fact that Rubio has many titles in the Trump administration and made it seem like The Entire Internet is celebrating him with AI pics. Seems like something The Onion might have imagined CBS News pulling these days. Ridiculous.0 points

There's been an internal East vs. West "fight" going on since they decided to standardize graphics. The earliest demos of the package, spearheaded to a degree by the Chicago brain trust, used the WABC layout, and this was before the 2021 network logo change and short-lived co-branding rules. That said, there was a point around that time, pre-2023 launch, when the KABC/KGO layout would have spread to all four 7s, but they ultimately decided to keep the Ws and Ks separate. ...until now. The word I've received is that the new KABC set will be without any ABC meatballs, anyway, only solo Circle 7s, but that that logo change will happen by the time the set debuts.0 points

Perhaps we will see new mic flags around that time, as well. To me, the WABC-style mic flags (which I know KABC had a similar version years ago) has always been more stylized and flashy than ABC7's current mic flags in Los Angeles.0 points
