One of the best news anchors New York ever had.2 points

NBC News Daily replaced Days, because Days was doing very well on streaming, to the point that since the move, the last couple seasons have charted viewing minutes in the billions and often one of Peacock's top shows. Streaming is the natural home of soap operas, considering how frequently they used to be recorded on VHS/DVR for later viewing. It made sense to move it streaming-only and free up the linear time for even lower-cost programming. Basically, Days is a draw for Peacock, so I doubt they will be reversing that anytime soon. I could see NBC just expanding NBC News Now programming and making that available to local stations. MSNBC's departure from 30 Rock has left them with several studios and control rooms sitting idle, so the resources are there to just come up with some podcast-format show that they can produce for cheap.2 points

Could they bring back DAYS OF OUR LIVES to the broadcast/linear/mother channel? I also don’t think it’s a bad idea for them to make a syndicated version of Password to air at 7:30.2 points

Looks like WREG is going to the simplified Nexstar graphics train.1 point

Will he be joining his toupee in South Florida? (That was sent there after Marty Bass found himself under... interesting circumstances.)1 point

Ernie was still well known by younger generations aparently. Even the "New Yorker" IG page was posing about him. He looked really great at 82!1 point

I'll say the one relevant thing left for celebrity shows is that they are a reliable source for celebrity gossip unlike many online bloggers. Stefon Diggs and Cardi B breaking up sounds more reliable coming from Access Hollywood than some blogger. Because the situations on Maury (likewise with daytime court shows) are evergreen. Are one of these 6 men the father of my baby? is a timeless dilemma lol. Talk shows however rely on current events and guests promoting current projects.1 point

That might be a licensing nightmare We might end up seeing shows originally on Netflix air on broadcast linear, this year through 2030 a lot of the rights to Netflix "originals" from its growth spur are starting to expire and they probably have limited monetization potential but enough to fill airtime1 point
-
NBCU is continuing to offer Steve and Karamo as reruns, and apparently the Maury reruns they distribute get surprisingly good numbers in a number of markets (Milwaukee being one of them). I also wonder if simulcasting blocks of stations’ diginets could be a strategy; maybe Sinclair stations could simulcast parts of Comet or ROAR’s schedules1 point

I really wonder what's going to happen to the CW, MyNet and independent stations, since the trash talk was a staple.1 point

Rose Ann Scamardella!! on Ernie's passing Ernie's WWOR days (1998) Ernie's last day at WCBS (2005)1 point

As much as I would like to see Today condensed, I doubt that will happen. At this point the affiliates seem to be struggling to fill airtime so I'm not sure one or two hours less of Today is a benefit. As for Days... was it doing badly compared to NBC News Daily that it had to be cut from the tv schedule?1 point
-
Well, keep in mind that all of the shows that are ending are syndicated, so not every NBC station would need to fill gaps. If they wanted to bring back DOOL, they would need to either replace NBC News Daily (which wouldn't solve the problem since there would still be two empty hours), take another hour from the affiliates, or syndicate DOOL/make it exclusive to the O&Os. None of those seem all that likely to me, but I guess anything is possible.1 point
-
No. Not really. The host of Philly Live left the station, and the station decided to end the program, thus returning WCAU back to a full hour at 11am.1 point
-
It would be interesting if they expanded their lifestyle shows to a full hour and moved them to the afternoons, but I don't really see them doing that. WCAU's is only 15 minutes long anyway, since their 11am newscast is 45 minutes.1 point
-
Steve Wilkos never changed his format It was the same thing for 19 years That's not a bad thing!1 point
-
The FOX O&Os will need to replace "Sherri," so we may be seeing more of that. Or they could just bring "The Jason Show" to the entire group.1 point
-
I wouldn't be surprised if they did something like that. They could air Law & Order reruns to pair with Dateline.1 point
-
I don't see the other O&Os expanding to an hour at 11. The second half is their pay to play lifestyle show like NY Live. It is followed by NBC News whatever (the streaming feed) and a Deadline repeat. It does leave a 2 hour gap in the middle of the afternoon (AH live and Kelly Clarkson's hour) but I'm not sure another repackaged version of the news is the right move, especially if they end up with a full hour from 7-8 pm. We'll probably won't know the plans until late summer.1 point

I grew up watching Access Hollywood and Steve Wilkos since I was very young. Now to see them (and more) ending later this year is a big bummer.1 point
-
This means, WTVJ Miami will have the following gaps (others may have similar gaps as well)... 11am first run and 2:30am repeat (Kelly Clarkson) 1pm (Access Daily) 7:30pm first run and 3:30am repeat (Access Hollywood) I can see NBC O&Os expanding their midday news to an hour again (except for WRC and WCAU which already do an hour) while shifting their lifestyle shows to earlier or later times.1 point
-
Also, WRC doesn't need to do anything early evenings since they still have an hour-long 6pm newscast plus an existing 7:30 newscast.1 point
-
Well, looks like NBC O&Os (except KNSD, who has the Sony Fun Hour) will be launching hour-long 7pm/6pm newscasts this fall. And they need to figure out what's gonna replace Access Daily and Clarkson, too. Access Hollywood ending is a total stunner. It's like syndication finally flatlined this year.1 point
-
This is a setback for Access Hollywood viewers. The show takes us back to the Pat O’Brien and Nancy O’Dell hosting era and it’s a huge loss for syndicated television and episodes will continue through September.1 point
-
So does someone else pick up the production of some of these shows? Access Hollywood and Wilkos have to have some life left in them, don't they?1 point

Ugh, , Damn. This is some difficult news to bear. I really revered him. Im honestly a little bit heartbroken. I seemed to believe he could live much longer because of how well he l had taken care of himself. Even though he was no longer on TV, it seemed like he was always available in someway. I mostly remember him on Fox 5. The face of that channel really at the time. I remember watching him leading in, after American Idol in the late 2000s and 2010s. He was so respected and well liked here on these forums, we always talked about him. Especially during the earlier days of this forum. Ernie Anastos was is on par with all of New York's great anchors we all know, Roger Grimsby, Bill Beutel, Chuck Scarborough, etc, he was the face of WABC in the 80s and then of course WNYW in through the 2000s. I miss his calm demeanor and his smile. Great wholesome man with a lot of integrity, valor and trust. He will be missed. May he rest in peace and may our memories of him keep his spirit alive.1 point

Haven’t on WNBC. All the rest. Previously at WPRI in Providence1 point

This one is really sad. He was a legendary news figure in this great city.1 point
-
There are other posts on Ch. 7 board too. He also worked for WCBS2, and prior to moving to NY to work for almost every station (WNBC and PIX are the exceptions) he was at WPRI in Providence where some of us first saw him. Because he worked at so many NY stations, perhaps all further posts should go into the main NY thread?1 point

That's the joke. Like the third place station in a two station race. Dish has always been scum so it's probably Sling TV that keeps them in business.1 point

And the stations are gone. I'm surprised that Dish is still around. They're the third DSS provider in a 2 way race to the bottom with DirecTV.1 point

Honestly, Gray dropped the ball with WOIO moving to Independence. I wouldn’t be surprised if Gray is chomping at the bit to move to Lakeside. It is a technically advanced studio and WOIO could easily spruce up that newsroom.1 point

I believe the WJW facility is much larger and has two studios instead of one. And the WKYC studios would probably fetch more on the market.1 point

I'm also glad that KY3 hasn't made the switch. With all the corporate conformity across the majority of stations regardless of ownership, it's good to see them maintaining some autonomy.1 point

I'm really not surprised. The internet has made celebrity newsmagazines pointless and it has been that way for at least a decade. I'm sure every NBC owned station is thrilled Access Hollywood & Access Daily are being cancelled. Ratings have fallen dramatically over the years and it was pretty clear they were only airing in high profile time slots on NBC O&O's because they were produced by NBC Universal. If you look at markets where NBC doesn't own stations, these were not airing in high profile time slots if even cleared at all. Access Hollywood had been demoted to overnight on a lot of non-NBC O&O's and there are a lot of major markets where Access Daily was not even broadcast. All these shows were doing is bringing down the ratings for NBC O&O's. It's a better problem to have to find new programming than be stuck with dying shows that you are only buying because they are produced by the network that owns you. My guess is the NBC O&O's either launch another local daytime newscast or start broadcasting a 2nd hour of NBC News Daily to replace Access Daily and I expect all stations to expand their 7pm newscasts to a full hour to replace Access Hollywood. NBC stations have the benefit of little local news competition in the 7:00pm hour as most ABC stations are committed to Wheel of Fortune & Jeopardy while FOX is with Extra / TMZ and CBS is with ET / Inside Edition. I do think it will be hard for local news to rate worse than Access Hollywood.0 points

Former longtime FOX 5 anchor Ernie Anastos has died at the age of 82. He also worked at ABC 7 prior to FOX 5 as stated in that thread. As many of us know, he was one of the remaining living legends in New York news, and his storytelling made a big impact on the entire Tri-State area. May he rest in peace.0 points
