28 WBRE/WYOU 22 continues to slowly phase out their Eyewitness News branding, and this week they have introduced “Future Alert Weather”, to replace “Eyewitness Weather”. 
 

It looks awkward as all get out in the graphics banner, and as a brand I’m really not sure how I feel about it.

It makes you feel like they're going to have red LEDs all over the studio even when its 85º and sunny as they Future Alert you that thunderstorms may happen in the month of April. Baffling brand; it feels like it belongs solely as a forecast model brand rather than one for the entire department.

Agreed.  They and Sinclair want to own multiple channels in every market if left unchecked.  That's not good for viewers.

Problem with this tactic is that much of the public either doesn’t care about or opposes the idea of the type of media monopolies Nexstar wants. Considering the animosity many conservatives have against the media (fed further by Trump’s attacks on the press), I doubt many of them support the idea of big media getting inordinately bigger with no limits, either.

 

The only support comes from Beltway conservatives (including those who want to entrench their political power) and billionaire media moguls, so Nexstar isn’t reading the temperature of the public well.

This is a losing strategy for sure, and in the smaller markets where there's already no other choice but Nexstar (aka the first ones to be sold off to vultures like Standard and AMG so they can get pointless pipe dreams like a WGN/WCIU duopoly) this will not go well for them. Less competition has been nothing but bad for them, and the 'competition' they've provided in SouthernBorderNation (does NewsNation report on anything else) has not been close to worthy at all.

The tactic of a TV station group encouraging people to call a MVPD when they can't reach a retransmission agreement has been a major cringe of mine since it became a thing.

 

Trying to get your viewers to cosplay federal lobbyist by posting messages with growth and investment as a euphemism for consolidation on the site formerly known as Twitter is several steps worse than that. 

 

If a company wants to advocate for itself, great. Find something authentic to demonstrate how deregulation benefits people who aren't named Perry Sook.

 

A low-energy social media astroturfing campaign where they don't explain what they want is pretty weak.

 

Especially considering the biggest hurdle to stop it from happening with the current balance of power in DC is it gets put on the back burner and forgotten.

Luckily some Nexstar stations like KTLA has not been airing those segments that they are trying to force on all of their stations. Nexstar is clearly going the Sinclair route here with this and you might remember Sinclair got a lot of criticism for running the same pieces on their stations a few years back.

As long as they can slap a sponsor's logo on it... pretty sure they don't care what it's called.

Any outreach event Nexstar puts out has a "insert logo here" mentality to sell to the first willing client.  Whether it's band-wagoning a major sporting event with a special program or running their "Remarkable Women" promotion, everything has a dollar sign attached to it.

Question: Last year or so, WHO in Des Moines introduced former KCCI meteorologist Metinka Slater to their station... I've yet to see her do anything on-air and a search of their website only shows the same introduction clip... Has anyone heard if she's even doing anything there?? (Not sure if this question belongs here or in Out & About -- move if needed)

I was wondering what on earth that "Remarkable Woman" special was on the CW Sunday night; it seemed so vague as to be a time-buy from some group you expect to carry a generic 'salute to gospel' or 'independent film showcase (of whatever they could get cheap)' that you see on Sundays on a station that doesn't have the NFL doubleheader and the home team is on the other station. It felt like some kind of bizarre Queen for a Day rehash.

 

It also seems kind of insulting to anyone not in a Nexstar market, because the states without a station just came off as having very 'unexceptional women' (they drew 11 randomly from NewsNation but like...just spread them across each state. There's no reason outside Perry's ego that Alaska shouldn't have a 'remarkable woman').

Outside of sports and the good shows they bought, The CW is really no better than the 'i for infomercial' era of Ion at this point.

It looks like WROC-TV Rochester is finally going to be adding some weekend morning news as they're currently looking for a Meteorologist for that position.

 

However, the pay... is why this company is shitty.
