I may be the only soul who liked the format of What You Need to Know, sort of a throwback to the old days of GMA/Today, with a somewhat less sensational and fluffy approach than is currently employed on the mothership.
 

So be it; budgets and numbers are what they are and if the decision is to change, they have the data that gives them the reason to change it. More power to ‘em if they are pivoting to a new approach. Or an old approach as the case may be.

Sam Champion confirmed the producers want to change up the GMA3 format and try different things.  He and Lara are subbing in intentionally.

Strahan, Sarah and Keke was my favorite incarnation of the program, but it never took off.

They (DeMarco) still referred to the program as GMA3 in a teaser I saw this morning on WLS-TV (which also included the GMA3 logo). Plus, there is still a separate link/section for GMA3 on the main GMA website, so they haven’t completely given up on the name just yet.

If this becomes a long term pairing it would be Lara's second time in a similar role. Reminds me of when she hosted Good Afternoon America.

 

This is cool for Sam who (speculation) seems to have wanted a network position again after leaving GMA years ago.

If the buzz is true about DeMarco and Eva getting the boot, that especially sucks for DeMarco who was overjoyed to the point of tears after getting the job.

 

He's had some pretty prominent anchor positions over his career so I'm sure he'll get another opportunity at ABC.

I would assume both DeMarco and Eva are safe, but you never know. With the rumors of Strahan likely leaving (at year’s end) and Stephanopoulos being unhappy; it sounds like there are bigger issues to worry about at GMA.

 

Plus, there is speculation that Robin, George and Michael don’t want to take on an additional hour, so that may work in DeMarco’s and Eva’s favor (if the plan is to have 4 co-hosts).

Today GMA3 started out without the goofy 8:30am theme or 'This is the third hour of GMA' from the announcer, but plenty of mentions of 'what you need to know' in a couple of feature stories, so it looks like they're experimenting week-to-week.
