Thread Note: Since Scripps has indicated they intend to run ION Media as a separate entity from their existing (mostly) news-producing stations, ION discussion has been relocated to a new thread.

Well… they got some nifty new preview graphics in a light blue color:

Also a new background for use in a multiple person box, not sure how well it shows up but it’s using some of the same light blue color. They’ve had the blue on their jackets for years now. It’s about the same shade that Honda uses for its commercials. Lower Thirds are the same.

7 News Detroit Sponsorship Bumper:

What's with the Hearst-like rip off diagrid L3's for their 11pm bumpers??

In the scheme of things, losing a heritage brand to a corporate one these days is just another letdown of what local TV has become.   And Scripps' rollout of stripped-down playlists of packages masquerading as newscasts take even more out of it.

I dont know what Scripps has up their sleeve for their soon-to-be independents, but from what they've been putting out, it's a far cry from ever being able to be a dominant player in TV.

Why? Because they are dropping a name that hasn't really meant anything since Bill Bonds got fired 30 years ago?

Good lord, this fandom is so unbelievably out of touch with reality.

I don't mind the "7 News" branding at all; direct and to the point, though the 'Detroit' suffix just adds clumsiness to the branding just because all the other stations in the market append 'Detroit' to their branding. Nobody is thinking it's a Southfield station despite it being based there. And 'Action', at least for Detroit, is long out of date for a station that sticks to the studio or grabs either pool feeds, municipal-provided video, or freelance video from 'Hank's Discount Detroit Crime and Traffic Videos'.

'7' and '7 News' is simple, and this reminds me of WTMJ under Scripps deciding to add on 'News' to their news branding (i.e. the clumsy 'TMJ4 News Today') because some out-of-town researcher found the one guy who thought 'TMJ4 Live at 10' wasn't a news broadcast and needed it literally spelled out in the title. It's just a pointless 'crouton' word that adds word salad to intros; leave 'Detroit' for the ID small type or for the slogan instead.

Thank God that mostly (See KSHB) didn't happen in Kansas City.

Yea, I agree. They could call it 7 News. I mean, come on, it's an DETROIT station.

Something's telling me that KILM Channel 64 in Los Angeles, California is going to turn Bounce TV affiliate into an Independent station to air Syndicated Programming what KDOC-TV showed, live local news, live local sports and live local events there's a chance for the Los Angeles Market to bring back Independent station but it's got to be KILM Channel 64 owned by Scripps that's what something's been telling me

Scripps is looking to sell Bounce TV.

https://localnewstalk.net/topic/13768-scripps-general-discussion/?do=findComment&comment=296724

I wonder if Scripps finds a buyer for Bounce if Bounce will be leaving their subchannels for good or if they will keep it. WXMI Fox17 has Bounce on DT3 wish they kept Court TV on DT3 put Bounce on WZPX DT's in my opinion. Bounce was on Wood TV DT2 from 2013 to 2021 as LIN TV, Media General, & Nexstar aired the Scripps diginets before they bought Fox17 in the Nexstar & Tribune merger in 2019.

I think Bounce TV will leave KILM Channel 64 and move to KPXN's subchannel 30.6 and move Jewelry TV to 30.7 which this subchannel is unused for a long time to make KILM Channel 64 to turn Bounce TV affiliate into an Independent station possibly branded as California 64 to air live local news, live local sports, live local events and Syndicated Programming what KDOC-TV used to offer because people have been complaining about Independent station from KDOC-TV is gone since July 28th, 2022 that's could be a good choice for KILM Channel 64 to become as an Independent station that's a possibility

Well my station wftx got the scripps treatment fired alot of anchors and has a lawsuit on them etc. And hired and fired the subsequent successor news team and in this new style newcast all you see is the "community correspondent" reports don't even see the anchors anymore

Hot off their Stanley Cup victory, the Florida Panthers will now air on WSFL and WHDT, with a Fort Myers affiliate to be named:

Ft. Myers will likely be a WFTX subchannel, which is already crowded enough as it is since Ion has no Ft Myers station alone. You'd hope though they would just affiliate with another station just to keep it in HD.

Short of a sidecar LMA with commercially licensed godcaster WRXY, which seems unlikely, that market is full-power duopolied out. So a 36.x scenario seems most likely.

Free TV Networks has acquired the naming rights and programming inventory of Defy TV from Scripps, which repurposed the (original) Defy’s former channel space for an OTA relaunch of Ion Plus (a farm of 2000s-2010s dramas carried by other Scripps networks, former Ion/Pax originals and obscure CanCon and ‘90s-early 2000s first-run syndicated series that Scripps relegated to AVOD streaming shortly after acquiring Ion Media in 2021).

Free TV Networks relaunched Defy (dropping “TV” from the name, but keeping the logo used by the Scripps iteration) on Monday (July 1) with much of the same programming lineup as the original network. The Free TV Networks iteration of Defy was originally announced in April to be launched as Dare, intended as a copycat to the original Defy (similar to how The 365 and Outlaw are copycats to Bounce TV and Grit, both of which FTVN CEO Jonathan Katz once oversaw), with FTVN cutting a deal with A+E Networks to air unscripted content from its library (the network also initially intended to reuse The CW’s former “Dare to Defy” slogan, which was changed to “Dare to be Bold” for the “relaunch”).

One of the most confusing network 'launches' I've ever truly seen. They knew the CW wasn't going to let that slogan and name fly, they had the same library and it was still a last-minute decision where Scripps just handed them the Defy name? And right now their affiliate body is the decaying husk of HC2 and whatever full-power crumbs they could get from Gray?

Scripps is the clear winner here; they got to throw back on a popular channel over-the-air in Ion Plus (I think it should've never left but Katz got his way for a bit after the Ion close before he got pushed out), gets completely out of this gender-segregated network nonsense that has never worked (TrueReal already died last year) and Free TV Networks gets that A&E reality inventory that has become an absolute viewer repellent, aging like raw milk. About the only positive thing is they're adding Live PD reruns, but who wants to watch old crime coverage from six years ago?

Makes sense that FTVN paid to get the DEFY branding from Scripps what would they do with the name other than it being a footnote on Wiki and other media history websites. on Spectrum channel 193 in Kazoo they have the ION+ lineup on the guide and not DEFY lineup. Only thing I'd watch on DEFY is Pawn Stars & maybe Live PD: Police Patrol which isn't the OG Live PD for 3 hours just the spinoffs Sat is a full day of Live PD: PD Cam & Live PD: Police Patrol from 10AM to 2AM.

Scripps got some money for the DEFY name so they won big time, surprise that Kratz didn't want to bring back TrueReal LOL for FTVN.

Scripps is getting out some new opens and re-orchestrated music for the Olympics; WTMJ started rolling them out on their 5pm today.

Scripps needs new graphics altogether. This flat blue plainness is completely uninspiring compared to their old graphics package (minus the ad box on the left of the L3)

Oh boy, time for KSHB-TV to get them since they are an NBC Affiliate, yippee.

There isn’t enough reorchestrating in the world that can fix the music. It’s way too slow to sound serious.

Is Susan Kim WTMJ’s 6pm anchor or was she just filling in? I don’t watch 4 much but I’ve notice WTMJ’s weekend morning news is recorded, weather is the only thing live. Also, Scripps Wisconsin fill in (former?) meteorologist Michael Fish is recording weekend weather for WXMI Grand Rapids from it looks like a home studio the last several weekends.

What I don't understand is why WXMI let 3 mets go in less than 1/2 a year... Each of the girls that left (with the exception of Haleigh i believe) were told their positions weren't needed, yet they have a posting for a weekend meteorologist.  Candace could have easily filled that spot seeing that she just came back from maternity leave... There's something fishy going on there....

Scripps did Candance wrong along with Esabella I don't get why they let both go and in Candance's case why did she return after maternity leave and then let go 2 weeks later I just don't get that. Couldn't Candance sue Scripps for letting her go like that.
