I wouldn't be so sure! The October ratings for Phoenix show that KTVK continues to be strong in the mornings and weaker in the evenings. Usually, the November ratings are not released to the general public for Phoenix.

Meredith's impact has yet to be seen on KTVK. We'll see what happens when the KPHOification of 3TV goes into effect, and they haven't even hinted when that will happen.

No big surprises in Chicago. I got the impression from Feder that WLS was tops in total viewers in every slot in which they compete. That would exclude after 7am and at 11am. WGN has seen a bump from 4-6am after a September anchor change, and the #9 has pulled into a solid 2nd at 4pm, though WLS is a juggernaut in the hour with the 3pm IE/J! lead-in.

Late Ratings (Total Viewers - 35,000 per point):

  1. WLS: 9.4 (+0.4 year-to-year)
  2. WMAQ: 6.6 (+0.7)
  3. WGN: 4.7 (+0.5)
  4. WBBM: 4.2 (-0.4)
  5. WFLD: 1.7 (flat)

(For the unfamiliar: Gannett8 = WFAA, Fox4 = KDFW, NBC5 = KXAS, CBS11 = KTVT)

(changes in parentheses above are comparisons to November 2013's sweeps)

Uncle Barky's article also brought up the lesser-covered news blocks, midday, 4pm, and 9pm.

Midday (total viewers): 1. KTVT (11am) 2. WFAA (12noon) 3. KXAS (11am) 4. KDFW (12noon) [no exact numbers listed]

Midday (25-54): 1. KDFW 2. WFAA 3. KTVT 4. KXAS

4pm (total viewers): 1. KXAS 2. KTVT 3. WFAA

4pm (25-54): 1. KXAS 2. WFAA 3. KTVT

(KDFW airs back-to-back Judge Judy eps instead of local news at 4pm.)

9pm (total viewers): KDFW -- 148,476; KDAF -- 8,718

9pm (25-54): KDFW -- 73,403; KDAF -- 5,897

(I'm not sure there's been a sweeps in recent years where the CW station (KDAF) has come even remotely close in the 9pm ratings to KDFW's 9pm newscast)

Didn't they also have this game show called Wheel of Fortune that aired right before the 6pm news? I think Wheel was #1, but Scripps only see the bottom line....hmmm

They did, but surprisingly they managed to do well with Let's Ask America in its place.

I don't have to say who won here...

The surprising news though? WOAI is actually #2 in some timeslots now. Making progress... Their new co-anchor was a solid addition to the team and surprisingly doesn't butcher our names like some newbies have...

Pushing 5 to 3rd place which is where they should be, the quality of their newscast has third place written all over it.

"SA Live" on 12 also won its timeslot. It's a well-produced show. The only thing is that one time a couple of weeks ago Fiona Gorostiza was away for the day and they had Jeff Roper do the show by himself. In other words they have not addressed if or who would co-host the show if one of the hosts are away yet. Maybe sometime next year we'll find out. They'll probably go the "let's have someone from a radio station" fill-in route...

Ratings from Phoenix!? Color me shocked! These are for 10pm.

Adults 25-54

#1. KNXV (1.8)

#2. KPNX (1.3)

#3. KSAZ (1.1)

#4. KTVK (0.9)

#5. KPHO (0.8)

HH

#1. KNXV (4.2)

#2. KPHO (3.3)

#3. KPNX (2.4)

#4. KSAZ (2.1)

#5. KTVK (1.3)

That KPHO discrepancy is massive; they're second in total households yet fifth in the demo. KTVK is the worst of the bunch, and I don't think their 10pm will last much longer. And...KNXV, what are you doing here? Having flashbacks to the News 15 glory days of the mid-90s, huh?

I imagine some other dayparts show very, very different scenes, though, as in Phoenix just about everyone can lead in something.

Wasn't KNXV a bottom feeder not long ago? Scripps biggest market and now #1 at 10... not bad for what we can see. I wouldn't be surprised if it's a mixed bag elsewhere.

My opinion on Phoenix November Ratings:

#1 - Who knew KNXV 15 would be #1?

#2 - Weird that KPHO 5 is there, since they are taking over KTVK 3 and that both stations are plain-ish.

#3 - What happened to KPNX 12?

#4 - FOX 10 is #4? Wow, actually like how they do news now.

#5 - Nope. No surprise KTVK 3 is at the bottom.

Each station has a specialty; KTVK in the later morning hours, KPHO at midday, KPNX at 6pm, KSAZ at 9pm, and evidently KNXV at 10 (I suspect the network is responsible for the jump here).

KNXV has an unusual history. In the mid-90s it got off to a roaring start (it dominated the Emmy awards in 1995 and 1996, it produced prominent personalities like Bob Woodruff, and it was fighting for #2 in late news), but it was quickly weakened by changes in management and news philosophy. They made a good run in the early 2000s (2003-05 period) after Scripps relaunched the station. But yes, aside from really once every decade since the beginning of their news operation, KNXV has been in bad territory. Theoretically, legacy concerns should not matter as much in Phoenix as in some media markets (e.g. St. Louis), but KNXV has somehow just never gotten it going.

KSAZ's always had a better 9pm (where they are the better of two stations) than 10pm.

KPNX I think has kinda held steady in a slow decline, which I'd have to say is related to talent.

And 10pm is KTVK's worst hour and one they only returned to in recent years. They've been much better at other dayparts (mornings).

I think it's also worth noting that KNXV has really copied KPHO in some things in recent years. It seems to be working.

It not the first time KNXV/ ABC 15 had the #1 status; when they had Wheel/Jeopardy from KTVK the first time their 6pm was #1 and 5pm moved up to #2, and the 10pm was a dog fight. I'm happy for the folks at 15, but deep down inside wish ABC would return to KTVK and 3 & 15 could be Indy outlet and Scripps could owned both station. The set up of 3 & 5 eh doesn't fit too well.

It's funny that you say that because when Gannett had to divest KTVK, I always thought that Scripps was the best fit, and had hoped the ABC affiliation would've also went back to 3 with 15 gaining the CW affiliation, and KASW disappearing into thin air. I don't really like the 3 & 5 duoply. Never thought it was a good fit. Something about it just doesn't sit well with me.

I have two comments about ABC15. First, I believe that Katie Raml was out for most (if not all) of the sweeps period (pregnant). Stephanie Hockridge is surprisingly good paired with Steve Irwin. Second, ABC15 is finally reflecting the work of the newish news director Pat Costello, formerly of KING in Seattle. Pat was known in Seattle for a relentless focus on "harder" news.

Obviously, ABC15 is not doing well in the mornings. Connie Colla (anchor) and Brandon Hamilton (traffic) are out. Perhaps the poster who said 3 and 15 would have made a better combo is correct. With a 3 and 15 combo, ABC15 would have acquired the successful GMAZ morning team!

As for the 3 and 5 pairing, we shall see how the staff is combined. I'm guessing that the 10pm news on 3 goes away soon.

KNXV's expansion of their 6pm newscast to one hour really helped, I think. KNXV did not have one block of news in the evenings longer than 30 minutes until then.

And as I expected, KSAZ's numbers were low, just like the other Fox O&O's. They're still able to beat KTVK though.

Just look at KSAT 12. Their noon, 6:00 and 10:00 p.m. newscasts (all hour-long) are #1 - just gives you an idea that an hour-long 6:00 p.m. news concept does work under certain situations.

Here is Houston's ratings (25-54 demo). Guess who's number one. You'll be shocked!

http://mikemcguff.blogspot.com/2014/12/kprc-claims-1-spot-in-november-2014-sweeps.html

Speaking of Houston, Univision 45 dominates the prime time ratings in November (Adults 18-49).

To Pittsburgh we go. KDKA is still dominating the noon, 4, 5, 6, 10 (CW) and 11pm timeslots
