Jase 1068 Posted May 29, 2016 Posted May 29, 2016 Wait. What is SOW? South of Wilshire. It's a game show from the creative minds behind TMZ.
ABC 7 Denver 1729 Posted May 29, 2016 Posted May 29, 2016 South of Wilshire. It's a game show from the creative minds behind TMZ. I thought it was a game show about beef distribution.
mardek1995 200 Posted May 29, 2016 Posted May 29, 2016 I think the answer is simple. A lot of Time Warner shows (TMZ, TMZ Live, SOW, The Real and soon Extra) air on WPWR, so there is already a working relationship, if you will, between Time Warner and Fox. With that said, it would seem like a logical choice to go with WPWR as the new CW affiliate.Isn't extra also going to air on all other MyNet stations owned by Fox besides WPWR (even though it'll have MyNet as a secondary affiliation)?
Jase 1068 Posted May 30, 2016 Posted May 30, 2016 Isn't extra also going to air on all other MyNet stations owned by Fox besides WPWR (even though it'll have MyNet as a secondary affiliation)? I can't say. The deal between NBC-owned stations and Telepictures to air Extra runs until 2017. A deal was reached between Warner Bros. Domestic and Fox to move Extra from WMAQ to WFLD/WPWR to pair it with TMZ and ideally, move them to the 6-7p CST timeslot. I'm guessing that since there was only 1 yr left on the deal and with WMAQ wanting to start a 4P newscast, all parties involved were in agreement to make the move.
T.L. Hughes 903 Posted May 31, 2016 Posted May 31, 2016 WCIU has so much programming inventory that it would need to be displaced by the CW, along with the WLS 7pm newscast. Most of that programming is contractually obligated to a certain timeslot and can't take a shove over to the U Too. The Saturday morning death star that is Litton's five hours would also need to be split out somehow. The only commitments WPWR is stuck with is MyNet, and that network has absolutely no power within the halls of FTS or 21CF in any way, nor does the poor soul who books the Weekend Marketplace infomercial slot where Litton is heading. The CW's reverse comp agreement would probably be overwhelming for Weigel in the #3 market; much more manageable for South Bend, but trebled in Chicago. In any case unless it somehow got paid to be on WJYS, MyNet isn't airing in primetime in Chicago at all after September 1st, no matter the station. Well, One Magnificent Morning is already timeshifted by WISH, XETV, KMAX and KTLA, all for Saturday morning newscasts (WISH, IIRC, airs the block on both Saturday and Sunday), so whether that would have been an issue if WCIU wanted to take the CW affiliation may be moot (if anything, the syndicated E/I content it airs would probably have had to been shifted elsewhere on the schedule, rather than OMM). Ironically, it has been inferred that WGN hasn't been able to expand its weekend morning newscasts past 7:00 a.m., because of its obligations to air the block. But given one of its sister stations received permission from The CW to move OMM two hours later when it decided to expand the weekend editions of the KTLA Morning News when the block launched a year-and-a-half ago, it seems odd that WGN wouldn't have gotten permission to do the same... assuming station management even contacted anyone at the network to do so.
Eat News 4745 Posted June 1, 2016 Posted June 1, 2016 .... it seems odd that WGN wouldn't have gotten permission to do the same... assuming station management even contacted anyone at the network to do so. Why contact the network if your intention was to leave the CW anyway?
T.L. Hughes 903 Posted June 2, 2016 Posted June 2, 2016 Why contact the network if your intention was to leave the CW anyway? I meant why didn't they try to contact the network to get permission to timeshift One Magnificent Morning so it could expand its weekend morning newscasts, when that block started in 2014... before Tribune decided to disaffiliate WGN from The CW. Unless they didn't feel it was a good idea, since the station already aired Bill Cunningham earlier than the network-standard 3:00 p.m. slot and deferred CW prime time programs to weekend slots because of sports 50 some odd times per year?
The Frog 435 Posted June 20, 2016 Author Posted June 20, 2016 The question, what will CW put in the daytime slot? Will they return the time to the affiliates, or will Tribune force them to run some other dreck? It turned out to be the latter. Here's Bill Cunningham's replacement: The Robert Irvine Show, another conflict talker from Tribune. https://variety.com/2016/tv/news/robert-irvine-daytime-talk-show-cw-tribune-1201799041/ The article also reveals that Tribune is in charge of programming for CW's daytime slot.

The CW will still try on Daytime? They should just give that up and let affiliates program that hour (whenever its on, depending on the station).

Another random dude I've never heard of before with a crappy CW conflict talk show I can definitely care less about.
Guest Former Member 207 Posted June 20, 2016 Posted June 20, 2016 Great. Another random dude I've never heard of before with a crappy CW conflict talk show I can definitely care less about. If ever seen "Bar Rescue" or "Kitchen Nightmare", Irvine's Food Network show is more of the same. Personality-wise, Irvine is more like a Steve Wilkos-type, minus the police background.

TheRolyPoly 2592 Posted June 20, 2016 Posted June 20, 2016 Never watched Tyra Banks or Bill Cunningham. This will be no less different. Thank you Roku for letting me watch France 2 or BBC One or even TVA while The CW has that crap.
mre29 1563 Posted June 20, 2016 Posted June 20, 2016 Why does the CW even have a daytime hour, anyway? Do they really think their target demographics tune in then?
T.L. Hughes 903 Posted June 20, 2016 Posted June 20, 2016 Why does the CW even have a daytime hour, anyway? Do they really think their target demographics tune in then? The daytime hour was a remnant of one of its predecessors, The WB. The CW chose to utilize that network's scheduling model when it launched, since The WB provided 20 hours of programming a week to its affiliates (five hours of prime time on Sundays and two hours Monday through Fridays, daytime programming on weekdays and Kids' WB on Saturday mornings), compared to the 12 hours (two hours of prime time Monday through Fridays and a two-hour rerun block on weekends) offered by UPN when they both shut down. Presumably, The CW's daytime hour targets a broader demo than the 18-34 target base that it focuses on for its prime time shows, which is probably why they still provide one.

nathannah 2505 Posted June 21, 2016 Posted June 21, 2016 Tribune is programming it. It's their call. Going by the fact that Cunningham turned down a compulsory three-year deal, Tribune has the slot until at least September 2019, though I hope they don't do the same month-long shoot for the season with Irvine that Cunningham did (I'm sure he'll do it because the Restaurant Impossible shooting schedule is just as time-pressured but it's still creative insanity). Hopefully they'll finally kill the embarrassment that was the timeslot being the last standard def show in American television, at least.
tyrannical bastard 4036 Posted June 21, 2016 Posted June 21, 2016 Former Sony Chairman Steve Mosko could make a play for Tribune.... http://www.thewrap.com/steve-mosko-goes-shopping-tribune-media-tops-on-his-list-exclusive/ I hope we don't have another Sam Zell / Randy Michaels, drawn out bankruptcy disaster on our hands....
The Frog 435 Posted June 21, 2016 Author Posted June 21, 2016 Going by the fact that Cunningham turned down a compulsory three-year deal, Tribune has the slot until at least September 2019 According to the article, Tribune's right to program the slot is part of their affiliation agreement. (It's unclear if that was stipulated in last month's renewal, or if they came to that agreement in 2012 with the Bill Cunningham deal. Perhaps not so coincidentally, that was the same time that the "CW Daytime" branding was dropped.) They'll have it until at least 2021. Presumably, The CW's daytime hour targets a broader demo than the 18-34 target base that it focuses on for its prime time shows, which is probably why they still provide one. Correct. They handed over programming responsibilities of their daytime block to Warner Bros.' syndication division in 2008 to do exactly that. https://web.archive.org/web/20080508000108/http://www.broadcastingcable.com/article/CA6557272.html

Thanks for the clarification; I didn't know the affiliation agreement tie. I'm guessing then that they held off on informing Cunningham of what his new deal was until the new affiliation agreement came down on the 23rd and that's when he turned them down shortly after; the timing all makes sense. I thought it was odd when we already got the death warrants for Crazy Talk and FABLife so early in the season and 2016-17 renewal notices after that, that the CW 3pm fate was literally tied to the Trib agreement.
Jase 1068 Posted June 27, 2016 Posted June 27, 2016 Definitely makes sense; the CW has pretty much killed the tired and Ostroff-loved 'CW channel number' or 'CW region' schemes in the last few years, and Sinclair just allowed WVTV in Milwaukee to resume using their old 'Super 18' branding that predated their WB affiliation. "Power 50, The CW Chicago" looks most likely (notwithstanding the FCC lip service they have to give to Gary in the TOTH ID's). Chicago's CW 50 is the winner. The logo was featured on the Fox 32/CW 50 float in today's parade. Barring any last minute changes, the logo will look similar to Detroit's CW 50.
24994J 5630 Posted June 27, 2016 Posted June 27, 2016 From Dawn Hasbrouck's Facebook stream at the parade. I'd say it's the same 50 as the My50 logo, but it's definitely similar to Detroit's. I think Chicago's is just a heavier weight of Detroit's font, in the first place.
