AT&T buying Time Warner?

TW Cable split from TW during the divorce of AOL and TW in 2009 as part of their larger reorganization to go to a pure-play content company. And If you ask me, AOL Time Warner wasn't as big of a mistake as everyone claims it was -- it actually is what is spurring these new media - tech relations. AOLTW was just ahead of it's time by about a decade.

Also, I don't think content management will be an issue -- they'll probably be mostly hands-off like Comcast is with NBCU. They'll have way too much content to actually hands-on manage. This is nothing but free cash for AT&T to throw at their shareholders.

The REAL question is who's next to be consummated?

Time Warner's cable holdings predate the merger with AOL. They even predate the merger of Time, Incorporated with Warner Brothers. Both Time and Warner Brothers each owned cable systems.

Maybe you guys are missing my point: YOU ALREADY HAD A CABLE + CONTENT COMPANY THERE IN THE FIRST PLACE!!!

Well, maybe the difference here is that Time Warner isn't buying AT&T. AT&T is buying Time Warner.

Maybe Time Warner couldn't run Time Warner Cable that well. Maybe Time Warner Cable was too small to do anything like a Comcast or an AT&T could. Maybe it is just that Time Warner did not want to run a distribution company. After AT&T buys Time Warner, Time Warner still won't be running a distribution company, AT&T would be.

A little thing I thought about...as Hulu prepares for its own live streaming service, if the Feds pass this merger, you'll have two TV rival providers who will be part-owners in that joint venture--AT&T/DirecTV and Comcast. That's not to mention that DirecTV will have its own streaming service launching around the time. They'll both have the nearly same identical channel lineups, give or take a few channels; this might venture into speculation territory, but it wouldn't be surprise me if Hulu Live (or whatever name it'll use) gives way to DirecTV Now, and merge operations in the near future, even despite Comcast, Fox, and Disney's interests.

AT&T has already stated that they plan to take DirecTV (in full) to streaming-only in the future, and that's after they migrate their Uverse TV subscribers (and new potential customers) over to the DirecTV platform.

These media companies, especially as streaming media grows, know that the game is changing...they have to adapt to stay alive.

Much like AT&T and Time Warner, these threads have been merged.

:smash:

Great,

Now the price of a collect call to Bugs Bunny just went up 16%...and continued crappy customer service from a new call center in (generic 3rd world country) Bupastan.

Trump said today that he's not going to let it go through. And given the way CNN has been treating him this election cycle it would be well deserved. Candidate Trump got virtually no corporate donations. He doesn't owe them a thing.

FTFY.

Like that's gonna happen. He's not gonna be president, so how can he do it if he can't even run his own companies right?

(plus CNN can't deserve it if he keeps dogging them [and the mainstream media as a whole] during his rallies and TV appearances because of him once saying he'd sue and basically silence them if he'd become President (and that's a bigger if than the Great Pumpkin coming.))

And who would honestly give a rat's ass what Trump thinks about the merger deal? After all that's happened throughout this election cycle, I couldn't care less if I tried about what he thinks about the cycle of curding cheese.

Yes, because clearly the system of checks and balances does not matter... BS if he thinks he can stop this merger. And FWIW, if CNN treats him like shit, then that's part of the game- he wanted to run for president, then he needs to suck it up. Clearly people turn a blind eye when FOX News treats the Democrats like shit, but only call out CNN's b.s.

Can't have your cake and eat it too...

The only thing TW and Trump really have with each other is the short-lived 1990 game show Trump Card, produced by Telepictures and distributed by WB Domestic TV- and even then, the connection was a bit tenuous, as it taped at what was then Trump Castle (now the Golden Nugget) and Trump himself made a cameo in the premiere ep- other than that, nothing (the show was actually based off a British show called Bob's Full House, with Bob Monkhouse).

Seems like there's a lot of confusion in the media as well. I've seen reports where they have included the cable company in with the content company. When I first heard the news I immediately thought of the cable company being taken over by AT&T as they don't have any serious content divisions.

Someone at Spectrum is probably regretting not trying harder to phase out the Time Warner Cable name right now.

What makes AT&T think they're going to buy Time Warner, despite the fact that AT&T tried to buy Deutsche Telekom (corporate parent of T-Mobile here in the U.S.) five years ago? And why is Time Warner getting back in the telecommunications game. Even though Time Warner Cable was spun off in 2009 (which merged with Charter this year), will DirecTV become of the *new* AT&T/Time Warner empire? I just don't know what to make out of this..

This really reminds me of Fin-Syn( big rabbit hole)...and even worse, the regulations that prohibit movie studios from owning the theaters where those movies are shown.

This won't be approved as it is, but just wait for the giant PR butt-kissing machine to get revved up, because you are gonna see all kinds of promises about improved this...and diversity that...and helping the poor...feeding the elves...bla bla.

Don't kid yourself. The public is on to your game. Your media is owned by big corporations and big corporations fear anything other than the status quo.

Internal polls right now are showing them tied. The IBD poll, the most accurate poll of the three last three presidential election cycles, is showing Trump + 2 after they adjusted the data. If they had used the raw data it would have been Trump + 8. Now back to the main point of this article. He has a fifty-fifty chance of being president and we all know Trump punishes his enemies. If you don't think he can do anything to stop the merger, I have two words for you: Keystone Pipeline.

Trump has already thrown down the gauntlet. He said he will not approve the merger because he does not believe in consolidation of the media. Left unsaid, however, CNN is his mortal enemy and CNN is part of Time Warner. It will be interesting to see if CNN starts softening coverage because of the threat. Just making it balanced and not so Trump bashing would be an improvement. Pussygate was a disgrace as was the Journ"O"list or whatever they call it now.

I like it when they trot out the ageing porn "stars".

What mud hole at Woodstock did these people come from?

Remember this is just a warm-up for 2020 when Kanye runs against Madonna for the White House....

Vouge!

Neither AT&T nor Time Warner have anything to do with local news.

I do have relation for this story and local TV news...

This morning, WTTG is running the story on their Sunday morning news and the images are cycling through multiple AT&T pictures, multiple Time Warner Cable pictures (trucks rolling, TWC cable offices, etc.), and a single shot of Time Warner's HQ...

o_O:rolleyes::confused:
