LoadStar 364 Posted February 20, 2017 Posted February 20, 2017 I just finished watching the news on WISN, and they are now running a station editorial by station president and general manager, Jan Wade. WISN has shown what they labeled an editorial a couple of times in the past, but they really ended up being just a promo for a school supply drive the station was doing. This is the first time in a *long* time that this or any other station I watch has done an actual editorial. Which leads me to wonder: are there stations out there that still regularly do station editorials? Or is the editorial I saw a rare anachronism, something stations simply don't do anymore?
rkolsen 1686 Posted February 20, 2017 Posted February 20, 2017 WBAL still regularly does them with about two topics on a weekend. About once a month or less one is broadcast focusing on a major community event (that's newsworthy in its own right) they participated in. Here's a TVNewsCheck article from 2013 that discusses editorials.
bhratbrat 437 Posted February 20, 2017 Posted February 20, 2017 WPLG ran one recently with their president Bert Medina about the I-95 Express Lanes and why they need to go. Down in South Florida I think they are the only station regularly doing them. I also know that WTOC still does a regular editorial as well as a couple of other stations in the south.
Eat News 4745 Posted February 20, 2017 Posted February 20, 2017 KBEX adopted the "One station...One editorial" policy... "Everything sucks...so get over your sad selves". ...and have a nice day.
CaptainNews 287 Posted February 20, 2017 Posted February 20, 2017 I know KCBS/KCAL does them regularly on weekends.
NEOMatrix 1307 Posted February 20, 2017 Posted February 20, 2017 WOIO has regularly done editorials ever since Bill Applegate was general manager and has continued the practice under subsequent GMs.
TheRolyPoly 2591 Posted February 20, 2017 Posted February 20, 2017 WPLG is the only one in Miami that does this.
ToriElectra 292 Posted February 20, 2017 Posted February 20, 2017 I've heard the owner of WFMZ does them, but I've never seen one.
ns8401 957 Posted February 20, 2017 Posted February 20, 2017 WXYZ in Detroit does a weekly editorial, either the Editorial Director or the VP/GM does them...
atlnews2 595 Posted February 20, 2017 Posted February 20, 2017 WGCL runs editorials from several different retired Atlanta reporters during their 5pm newscast.
David Salter JR 66 Posted February 20, 2017 Posted February 20, 2017 why were editorials done away with by tv stations?
SFTV 532 Posted February 20, 2017 Posted February 20, 2017 KGTV used to run them from 94-2003 and on and off (03-07) until the union strikes and Scripps takeover
johnnya2k6 171 Posted February 21, 2017 Posted February 21, 2017 WPLG is the only one in Miami that does this. And speaking of Miami...it was where the late Ralph Renick started the nightly editorials on WTVJ in the 1950's. Over in New Orleans, the late Phil Johnson did the same thing on WWL for dozens of years well into the mid-'90s; a few of them are on YouTube.
Ntropolis 599 Posted February 21, 2017 Posted February 21, 2017 WECT airs a weekly editorial with VP/GM Gary McNair ("My Turn/Your Turn") http://www.wect.com/category/136854/my-turn-your-turn-with-wect-general-manager-gary-mcnair
AaronQ 282 Posted February 21, 2017 Posted February 21, 2017 WBTV is the only station in Charlotte that does a editorial, and it's called "Speak Out" and it's hosted by their GM Scott Dempsey.
appleachian 135 Posted February 21, 2017 Posted February 21, 2017 Raycom requires the VP/GM at each station to do an editorial. WRAL has started doing Capitol Broadcasting branded editorials on their website.
rkolsen 1686 Posted February 21, 2017 Posted February 21, 2017 I imagine the must air spots by Mark Hyman of Sinclair would constitute an editorial.
WCAUTVNBC10 413 Posted February 21, 2017 Posted February 21, 2017 I've heard the owner of WFMZ does them, but I've never seen one. They still do. Not as frequently as they used to though. When they do run they air between the 10 and 10:30PM newscasts.
Breaking News 839 Posted February 21, 2017 Posted February 21, 2017 WGCL runs editorials from several different retired Atlanta reporters during their 5pm newscast. Not no more according to Newsblues.com and AJC.com After 18 months, Meredith's last-place WGCL-46-CBS in Atlanta (Market #10) has dropped its daily "Just a Minute" commentaries. "We found in today's politically charged environment some people simply were not open to a different viewpoint," said General Manager Mark Pimental. The commentaries will continue to be posted online. http://radiotvtalk.blog.ajc.com/2017/02/20/cbs46-moves-just-a-minute-commentaries-online-only/

24994J 5629 Posted February 21, 2017 Posted February 21, 2017 WFLD's VP/GM has been doing semi-regular commentaries for awhile now, but there's really only 1 commentator worth remembering in Chicago...
Eat News 4745 Posted February 22, 2017 Posted February 22, 2017 "We found in today's politically charged environment some people simply were not open to a different viewpoint," said General Manager Mark Pimental. "Different viewpoints"? Of what? An editorial?
tvtime07 252 Posted February 22, 2017 Posted February 22, 2017 KGTV used to run them from 94-2003 and on and off (03-07) until the union strikes and Scripps takeover Yeah, I remember seeing those often in the late 90s. It was a pretty cool segment to hear the GM addressing audience concerns in a variety of areas like network programming and newscast stories. Like I remember the current GM at the time, Darrell Brown addressing ABC's Wednesday night programming brand campaign (D-Day) and how people complained the use of teasers throughout the newscast.

KGTV actually ran editorials in the 70's and 80's with then GM Clayton Brace.
