WABC to launch 4pm news

Weird end to the 4pm just now... commercial break ended, stayed in black, repeated a Wheel promo, black again, then suddenly the 5pm anchors start talking without their mics on and the sound of something falling maybe somewhere else in the studio. Automation meltdown?

I thought it was odd when just before 5pm a report was airing with no lower thirds or the abc7 bug on screen and when it ended they went right to the 5pm newscast intro, no close from the 4pm anchors.

Automation meltdown is correct. One of the robot cameras slammed into a standing monitor as it was moving into its final position in the 4pm newscast. That camera shut down. The other two were in position for the start of the 5pm, but the 5pm anchor mics were not coded to start yet. Ugly mess.

More WABC bugs today. At 4pm the temperature bug was stuck on 85° when it was 73°. It was fixed for 5pm and 6pm.

For 11pm it's stuck on 73° when it's actually 64°.

Can't they take the temp off screen or manually correct it?

During one of the live reports in the 5pm newscast they went to the wrong taped package.

There was also a glitch when Lee started to do his forecast as the camera panned out early for the four shot.

Third place in the ratings, but beating Ellen on Channel 4. She's 4th place... Judge Judy is 1st place and Dr. Oz 2nd....

That's really nothing to be disappointed about, good for them!

yes - and to be honest, Judy had been beating us at 4PM on-and-off for the past year or two. If you looked at the ratings daily, they swung back and forth. Of course, Oprah's final season really helped us at 4 this past year.

The key is the audience that will still routinely switch over from channel 2 and 5 at 5pm to watch Diana & Sade. As long as we retain that audience, then the 4PM show is an absolute success. It's funny because in the end, the success of the 4PM has almost nothing to do with the actual show itself, but rather to not losing our 5PM viewers to WCBS or WNYW.

Netnewsguy can attest to this - producing a local 4PM show is a fraction of the cost of what the syndie rights to Oprah were. However, what we can charge advertisers for between @ 4 has fallen significantly as well.

"The Katie Couric Show" premiers September 4th, 2012 at 3PM - so here's to hoping she can pull in numbers that can beat whoever her 3PM competition is at that point, and can help the 4PM audience grow. Truth be told, Judy is a force to be reckoned with.. in and out of her courtroom. lol.

Any ideas as to what format the new Katie Couric Show will follow? Of course its a long ways away. Over a year away... But the other soap operas (AMC and OLTL) will of course be long gone by then. If General Hospital still exists my guess is that it will be pushed to the 2pm slot like the way KABC does it. BTW does anyone know what KABC is airing at 3pm? Is it a local show as well? I hope its not another newscast lol.
