  1. And speaking of WBBM and Lester Holt, here's a brand-new upload from NewsActive3 -- a weekend newscast from 1986:

  3. That is a very well-done post in the style of so many high school athlete commitments. Put a smile on my face.

  4. KNLC got MeTV in February. I would not be shocked to read a ratings report and see that Carol Burnett & Friends reruns on that station cleaned Allman's clock (and ABC must seethe seeing their 9pm lead-in just plunge at 10:00:00 exactly every night). And with Weigel having good relations by maintaining WBND in South Bend, ABC affiliating with KNLC (and a move of Me to DT3 with a state-of-the-art multiplexer) is a possibility too; despite Weigel's many issues, they have built out from scratch no-wave news departments before, and they'd do it again in St. Louis in a heartbeat.

  8. Someone posted an idea for a "sports classic video" thread on the shoutbox a few days ago. I like the idea, but I wanted to expand it a little bit. The focus of the existing classic video thread is on news and broadcast TV stations. This is, essentially, "everything else". Premium cable promos, MTV "vidchecks", sports promos and graphics, everything within reason. Obviously let's not post full game shows or compilations of production company logos. So! I'll start with three examples of the above. I had, like, five examples of premium cable promos but I ultimately went with this one. Why? I think mid-80s Movie Channel stuff is underrated. The theme music is great and the movie open is fantastic, and it's interesting to see bits of a channel that never quite found a niche. (Even a rebrand effort from the great Fred Seibert and Alan Goodman didn't really quite take off.) Here's a nice and long MTV "vidcheck" from 1982. For those who don't quite get the concept, it's sort of similar to a "scoped aircheck" of a radio station. In other words, the songs are more or less removed (well, most of them - there's enough to let you know what the song is), but everything else isn't. So this is the VJ banter, commercials, and promos from that era. It's interesting to note how tame it is in comparison to how MTV was later in the decade. The formatics are very, very similar to radio. Lots of VJ segments, lots of promos, pretty high on the music content (and before I get the obligatory "well, duh, this is when they actually played music" comments, I want to stress that this is in comparison to how they were much later in the decade, when there were much more commercials, promos, and news breaks.) Ok, so "full sports broadcast" might not exactly be "within reason" but bear with me here. I wanted to spotlight the 1993-95 ABC Sports look, and the best way to do it was with this, a full bowling telecast from 1993. Cheesy Professional Bowlers Tour theme song aside, this look has aged like fine wine. I've mentioned ABC Sports' theme music from this period many, many times... but I'm going to mention it again because it is simply my favorite piece of television production music. Period. But I also wanted to note the graphics, which is why I'm posting this in full. Like I said, it's aged like fine wine. With a few adjustments you could be using these today - and more or less, Fox Sports IS using these graphics today. The resemblance is striking. I'll take crisp and clean graphics like these over overdone gloss and dancing robots any day of the week.

  11. This isn’t the first - WCMH, as an NBC O&O, reaired their newscasts on WSFJ, a religious and ION (then Pax TV) station, as part of an arrangement between NBC and Pax. Many of NBC’s affiliates reaired their newscasts on or produced news for Pax stations. There is one arrangement still in place - in Louisville. WAVE produces news for Louisville’s former ION station, a religious station.

  13. They are not shutting it down. Their 10pm news is still quite well, even if sometimes they're being beaten by WPVI's news on WPHL.

  18. Oh, I know that. In fact, WFXT isn't the only station in Boston that does it; WHDH also runs its morning news till 10:00am, though they start at 4:30.

  19. I'd been hearing lately on KRLD several of the weather reports coming from KXAS' meteorologists instead of from KTVT, as well as a recent news report that came from a KXAS reporter. Too bad, but I guess it was somebody's business decision. The KTVT tie-in didn't seem like one that needed to go, but I guess having KXAS as a next choice will work out also.

  20. Along with KTVI's "Bommarito SkyFOX Helicopter". Why they didn't pull that graphic during their Ferguson coverage remains painful.

  21. Exactly. His whole program was a right-wing opinion based talk show so obviously Sinclair had no problem with that. But it's hard to defend someone when they threaten a high school student. But to be fair, I live in St. Louis and I didn't even know he made those comments. His program on KDNL is so low on the radar that if you asked 10 people in St. Louis about his show, 8 wouldn't know it even existed. I wouldn't be surprised if whatever is on KPLR at those times beat KDNL in the ratings. This was another sad excuse for Sinclair to satisfy their news requirements for their affiliation agreement with ABC. Now Sinclair has to hope that they are able to get KTVI or else they'll have to scramble to come up with another half-ass version of Plan B.

  22. The question should be whether Air Comfort Solutions Chopper 4 survives the station's ownership change whether it be Sinclair or someone else.

  23. The WISC and WHTM early 90s themes were also written by Sheldon Elias who did the WBBM theme. A further offspring, though not done by Elias, was the KFDA early 90s package by Eric Enfalt which accompanied two generations of WBBM ripoff opens. 26. Some Phoenix news clips (but no opens) from 1982 -- all of them about radio station KZZP: EDIT: Well, the video got removed, so I'll take advantage of this break in our regularly scheduled programming to share a a few of my favorite non-news opens. WQED, Pittsburgh; The Infinite Voyage (a science documentary series), 1989: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=id=E8DOV2VLTzs;m=1;s=57 Yorkshire Television, UK; Whicker's World (a current affairs travelogue), 1980 -- with a truly unforgettable final shot: And from 1987, Our World, a short-lived ABC News series that looked back at important periods in recent American history:

  27. KGO January 28, 1986 - Challenger coverage newscast with Van Amburg. He's one of a kind, great anchor, though takes a little liberty with speculation at times here trying to take on a complex national story. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=id=6gwnt3cBhRo;t=487

  32. My guess is that debuted in early '96 (we already had a 10pm open in March '96 with that look). It was gone by April 1997 because the station became "Fox 5".
