Most likely to make NBC happy during the Olympics showing the Peacock logo & the Olympic rings. Even affiliates not used to branding like this like Graham-owned WDIV in Detroit show off the Peacock & the rings albeit not alongside their logo.3 points

It's even weirder for WTVJ because it's own sister station, Telemundo O&O WSCV, was ranked higher then the NBC station. Also, it was 2002 when Tribune acquired WTTV from Sinclair, so Channel 4 was still a WB affiliate.3 points

The NBA needs WBD?? The NBA is getting $76 billion which, according to Forbes, represents an increase of 160% per season compared to the current contract. So I think the NBA is just fine. Besides, why would the NBA 'need' a partner whose CEO said they "don't need the NBA"? Plus is not being on TNT a big loss for the NBA? Their new 11-year pack includes two free over-the-air broadcast networks (a first for the league), a cable channel dedicated to sports, and two streamers in Peacock and Amazon. The three partners (Disney, NBCU, and Amazon) will also carve up international markets with Disney using ESPN-branded assets in Latin America, sub-Saharan Africa, Oceania, and the Netherlands They will use Disney+ in select markets in Asia and Europe. NBCU will distribute NBA games in several European markets via Sky Sports as well as in the Caribbean and sub-Saharan Africa. Amazon’s Prime Video will distribute NBA games with a package of games in Mexico, Brazil, France, Italy, Spain, Germany, the U.K. and Ireland. I believe it is this international piece which is where the NBA will say WBD didn't truly match the offer. They have been clear that it isn't just a dollar amount, but the overall offering. So this international component may well play a role, along with the additional activations Amazon included in their bid. Ultimately, I believe it is WBD that needs the NBA. They have cut most of their original programming so the NBA filled many hours on their schedule. Without the NBA, TNT will have a lot of airtime to fill. Will it be cheaper than producing NBA games? Sure. But the ratings will undoubtedly be much smaller. That, in turn, will hurt their ability to charge cable companies a premium for their channel. And NBA advertising dollars will dry up for WBD. So they will lose revenue on two fronts. Therefore, I believe it is WBD that needs the NBA more than the NBA needs WBD.2 points

With Scripps recently acquiring Florida Panthers rights, that WPLG 10pm doesn't have much longer on WSFL, IMHO.2 points

Kansas City wouldn't be the only place where the NBC affiliate would have tough sledding against an established Fox station's newscast at 10/9. In my neck of the woods WXII would find it rough going against WGHP; in Atlanta WAGA would crucify WXIA, which can't beat WAGA anytime it seems like; Birmimgham: WBRC would easily beat WVTM, what with its shares consistently hovering around 60; Tampa: WFLA does well against WTVT but that's on an equal footing like 5 and 6 PM; WTVT has an established 10 PM newscast. And I don't feel confident about some of the o&o cities: WNBC would go in as an underdog against WNYW, just as WRC would against WTTG. New York and Washington are two cities where the Fox (formerly Metromedia) stations have had 10 PM newscasts for decades. In short, this is risky business because if the NBC stations do get the time back they are going to start 10 PM newscasts and the odds are not good in a number of markets.2 points

WBD matched the Amazon package so they should get that package since it was in the contract that WBD could match the offer and the NBA couldn't reject it. The NBA needs WBD more than WBD needs the NBA which the Amazon package will be a flop plus they shouldn't get a Conf Final game every other year which should've gone to NBC for the 11 years since there paying more than Amazon. The NBA did WBD wrong, and they have a good case against the NBA in the lawsuit.1 point

I left the show on in the background throughout the afternoon. The show is almost 100% driven by conversations between Bob and other Fox Weather meteorologists and reporters. Basically every segment featured a different guest: Michael Estime, Ari Sarsalari, Ian Oliver, Kiyana Lewis, Robert Ray, and Greg Diamond (senior weather producer). Every hour is not fully live, but each hour is presented in a different order and with a slightly different arrangement of guests; for example, Robert Ray was not in hour 1, but he was in hour 2 (new) and hour 3 (recording from hour 2). On the other hand, Michael Estime led off hour 1, but hour 2 kicked off with Ari Sarsalari, who was the second guest in hour 1. The segment "Bob's Bet," where the guest who correctly answers a trivia question picks the music for tomorrow's show, returns from the beta test that they did for this show several weeks ago the last time that Bob anchored a full week of America's Weather Center.1 point

There isn’t enough reorchestrating in the world that can fix the music. It’s way too slow to sound serious.1 point

That's why I mentioned San Francisco because it worked in Sacramento, but it didn't in the Bay Area.1 point

KOVR right next door in Sacramento still has early prime and a 10pm newscast, with much success.1 point

It always never fails to see certain people in this fandom bleat the age old cry that mOaR lOcAl nEwS is what the marketplace needs. Sure, let's divvy up a shrinking pie of TV viewers even further while overstretching existing personnel to do more work for less pay and merely rehashing the same content with the same McStation graphics and same unimaginative cuts from another generic Stephen Arnold music package. YAWN. Here's a news flash: if either big three network pulls out of programming the 10pm hour, that's nothing but a devastingly dire outlook for the entire industry. It means that local television is in trouble and in an unsustainable path to insolvency unless you implement the Scrippscast model (or even the Rogers CityNews model) across-the-board or utilize AI to do everything for less. But then again, it's not the first time the TV fandom has been so utterly detached from reality.1 point

I feel like the weather channel needs an entire new graphics and icons package! The refresh feels like a mash of old HD look and 2013 look together!1 point

When Tribune acquired them they were a #5 CW affiliate and they switched to CBS, so it's allowed to stand with no issue. Most of the Big Four combos were allowed when the Fox affiliate had a sudden bad month against the WB because the FCC uses Nielsen market rank at the time of proposal to determine if a non-failed station waiver merger could go further or not; remember the attempted WTVJ sale to Post-Newsweek that didn't go through because Uni and Telemundo ranked higher than them before it died due to inaction.1 point

It looks fine. I suppose it's better than the current standard Nexstar Fox graphics. I don't think I'd say this is better than the O&O BNF graphics.1 point

Let's save some time here- Most markets have an established newscast in that timeslot that would likely beat the NBC affiliate's fledgling entry. WGN>WMAQ, KTLA>KNBC, WITI>WTMJ, WVUE>WDSU, the list goes on. Is it set in stone anywhere that it has to be a newscast in the timeslot, or could smaller markets opt to run a true crime/Dateline syndication? Does a larger owner like Gray produce more InvestigateTV pieces for their affiliates to differentiate their newscasts in that timeslot?1 point

Well, what's also important with this particular point is that... WDAF is #1 in most timeslots. They're not running away with it but they're pretty good. KSHB got rid of their 9pm news on KMCI 20+ years ago because of WDAF's success at 9pm. KCTV used to have 9pm news on KSMO at one point too but got rid of that because of WDAF's success at 9pm. The only real challenger here is KMBC's 9pm news on KCWE which does well because of the KMBC branding and reputation but I think WDAF is still #1 there and by a good bit. If this did happen, KSHB would be destroyed at that timeslot as its been proven 20+ years ago at KMCI.1 point

As a consumer of a metric ton of NBA I really don’t like the Amazon streaming option, or any other streaming option for that matter. I hope WBD can come out successful in this.1 point

The time brokerage between the two stations started in 1994, and the terms of the TBA, while not allowable today, are grandfathered by the FCC because it was established before the federal government put new rules for the operation of TBAs/LMAs/etc. The transfer of WBBH from Waterman to Hearst included assigning the existing WZVN time brokerage agreement to Hearst.1 point

Sounds like he picked that up from Dave Ward during his time at KTRK. 'Creeper' seems a bit strong.1 point

Tallahassee is about as backwoods as a state capital can be, especially for Florida. Sinclair could have capitalized on that, but they didn't. Instead, you have WCTV and whatever's left of WTXL when Scripps stops stripping it (and their sister stations) for parts. Meanwhile, the less media, the better for all of the state politicians who bow down to Lord DeSantis and his regime over Florida.1 point

Jeff Vaughn wasn’t anything special. When he first got to town, he couldn’t pronounce city and street names correctly which was instantly annoying and why a local should’ve been an anchor. His delivery is flat and boring; he has zero personality and IMO, better suited for news radio, especially with his deep voice. Those annoyances coupled with Suzie Suh always shaking her head in the affirmative at every damn thing, turned me off real quick. In fact, I remember being annoyed CBS dumped Jeff Michael in favor of Jeff Vaughn, but figured JM had the higher salary, which I assume is true now, Vaughn had a higher salary than Chauncey Glover, who, again, IMO, is equally unwatchable, starting off the newscast “hello friends.” Creeper.0 points
