It's the Paramount way to create an MVP; a 'minimally viable product'. They've already cut MTV and Nickelodeon and their other channels down to a bare existence of certain shows, and are now just doing the same with CBS. No more Grammys, Blue Bloods minus the weight of Tom Selleck's contract, international imports from Ten and Five, soaps from Atlanta, and now CBS Mornings in the equivalent of an average Nexstar studio space with network and stations using the same themes and design language. We are seeing in real time how much they can cut from CBS before they get comparisons to CW/Fox.2 points

I'm looking forward to a time when the national anthem plays and broadcasts end for the day because it's too expensive to run anything anymore. Remember, RFK is implementing a rule which wouldn't allow big pharma to advertise. This is a what I primarily see as the advert stream for evening newscasts. So the era of network evening newscasts may just end.2 points

After 25+ years, the new KUSI set is in service https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=1338842107280213 https://www.instagram.com/p/DDBlmNZRvMC/ https://www.instagram.com/p/DDAFb8DvKXI/ I like the use of the header above to add some depth and the look fits KUSI. Camera blocking is still pretty bare bones - just straight on shots with the skyline in the background for the close ups, so you don't see much of the variety of the sides of the set on air unless they're doing a 4 shot. KSWB will move into the KUSI building when its studio is finished. No change to the graphics or music...would have thought that would happen along the new set. So maybe they'll keep the pre Nexstar look going that's comfortable to so many viewers. Recent promos have been doubling down on the star /red white and blue, classic KUSI look with a 'Putting You First' slogan, so that leans toward no big changes in the look. A few months ago they changed the typeface on the lower thirds and added a ticker, but that was the extent of it. https://www.instagram.com/p/DCsO2gESkMx/ Viewer feedback in the Facebook post is spicy, less about the set, more about shifts in the story selection and guests after Nexstar acquired. I think they're still #1 in the 10/11pm slot.1 point

It was reported here a couple months ago WCAU's studios at the Comcast Technology Center suffered water damage with the sett having to be demolished. Today at 11AM they debuted a new set in the repaired studio: Watching the replay of the newscast on Peacock, there's a lot of elements that remind me of the NBC Sports RSN set. Like the set it replaces, a seamless 4K screen features as the backdrop behind the news desk. Weather is done in front an almost equally large touch screen. Not sure yet if there is a full weather set. We'll see. Update: so they can change the set colors on the fly. Also there's tons of standup pods around the studio. Finally my question about the weather center was answered. The one from the previous set actually survived and is behind the frosted glass the weather screen is mounted on. You can make it out when they pan in on the screen and you can also catch it in the timelapse.1 point

That's a live camera. It's mounted atop the Adventure Aquarium in Camden. I don't mind traditional wall sets if done right and shot with creativity. From what I've seen so far, they've used some really interesting shots to present stories. I think a lot of times designers get caught up in creating depth that they end up with an overly busy set. Iirc the studios at the CTC are around 2500 sq ft a piece (there's three of them) so they aren't the biggest spaces but certainly not the smallest.1 point

Nothing new to say about the Bally/FanDuel scoreboard this year; everything remains unchanged. Rangers network board is nice, and unusually with the Twins now MLB-P&D'ed, instead of an RSN bug, the Progressive logo remains on the top right of the screen at all times in addition to being the presenting sponsor. Not unusual for radio now, but a first for TV coverage in this age.1 point

Maurice DuBois is anchoring solo tonight, and weather was done by Rob Marciano on the actual set, not the virtual set. Also, had no idea where to post this, but since we already know the set is fake, why even try to hide it? Have the entire background fill the screen instead of having it on a fake screen, which in turn looks off. (Mind my bad editing skills but you get the idea.1 point

I don't think it has anything to do with Fox News. They started de-emphasizing network branding when NBC bought WTVJ, and I assume they've stuck with that approach ever since then because it's worked for them.1 point

That's a bit extreme, but I could see the networks' late-night lineups gravitating towards a mix of dirt-cheap experimental programming, movies, and imported shows, somewhat like ITV regions in the UK when they made their first attempts at late-night programming in the '80s and '90s. I don't see the classic late-night talk shows lasting much longer, that's for sure. There's really nothing they still offer that podcasts don't.1 point

Again, the reporting (from Variety, Comcast press releases, etc…) indicates that sports coverage/programming will continue on USA, CNBC, etc.. There has been nothing I have seen/read that would indicate otherwise. For example, this is directly from a Comcast press release from February in reference to the 2026 Winter Games… ‘Consistent with previous Olympic Winter Games, comprehensive cable coverage will be on USA Network and CNBC. USA Network will once again be the 24/7 home of Team USA while CNBC will provide coverage on the weekends and weekdays once its business day programming concludes.’ From a World Soccer Talk article.. ‘From a sports perspective, the partners that we have on cable assets like Golf Channel and USA, we’re going to fulfill every obligation and every promise we made to them across NBC and SpinCo, which is the cable assets,” NBC Sports President Rick Cordella explained this week at the SBJ Conference.‘ You have to keep in mind that removing sports from the spun off cable networks will greatly devalue them. Comcast is not going to do that despite the networks not being a part of the company. Again, it is expected some things will be sub-licensed to SpinCo and/or outsourced (likely to NBC Sports). For now, everything will continue as planned.1 point

I honestly saw the Gray triopoly in Phoenix trying to snatch-up the Diamondbacks OTA rights, but good for Tegna for getting those broadcast rights, along with the Padres and Rockies. Even said, as far as San Diego, I would thought that KUSI would have gone back and put-in a bid to carry some Padres games once again. That said, good for KFMB (another station that spent some years carrying in different times in the last 45 years airing some Friars games), as well as the duopoly in the Mile High City. Of course, as some folks know, KTVD carried a fair amount of Rockies games up until 2008.1 point

If they were going to put sports on cable, why not put it on the cable network it owns or plans to keep like bravo, instead of continuing to make agreements to put it on USA. Or like you suggested, put everything on NBC & peacock.1 point

Europe does not allow big pharma ads on TV, granted their tax payers foot the bill for a lot of TV production, but it hasn't collapsed their market. In the US the cost of sports, and bleeding affiliates for retrans fees is leaving them scrounging up for cash to invest in something watchable1 point

Let's level set here for a minute. First, NBCU must proceed with business as usual until the day SpinCo becomes a separate business. So, to that end, they proceed as normal in public while numerous plans and backup plans are crafted behind the scenes. For example, their NBA deal most likely included contingencies for how they would proceed if the USA network no longer existed. Remember, this is an 11-year contract, and cable has been contracting for a while, so it is highly unlikely this contract would have been signed without the ability to adjust programming platforms. It is probably happening sooner than anticipated, but cable will look much different 11 years from now, so both sides needed to carve out protection clauses in that contract. In addition, I don't think the NBA is hyper-focused on cable. It has been reported that the NBA was particularly attracted to the NBC broadcast network and its ability to create a "Basketball Night in America" franchise. The broadcast component was why, in the NBA's view, Turner could never truly match NBC's offer since Turner didn't have a broadcast network. The rights are with NBC Sports, not individual channels. And since NBC Sports stays with NBCU, the rights remain with NBCU. There is flexibility on the platforms airing content. Take the Olympics, for example. Ten years ago, NBCU put the Olympics on MSNBC to boost ratings for its struggling news channel. They aired the Olympics in the morning because Imus and their MorningLine programs were also-rans in the ratings department. Enter Morning Joe, and they decided it was more important not to interrupt regular MSNBC programming. So the Olympics moved to a different channel, and they didn't have to wait for a rights renewal to make that change. Having said that, NBC doesn't have carte blanche to do whatever it wants without input from the sports owner. The broadcaster has some latitude as long as any changes provide the sport with equal or greater exposure. For example, NBC couldn't take NBA games off the broadcast network and move them all to Bravo without consulting with the NBA. In that hypothetical case, the NBA probably has some veto authority. More information will be forthcoming regarding how this spin-off impacts NBC Sports. Perhaps SpinCo will sublicense content from NBC Sports, or perhaps NBC Sports will buy time on a SpinCo channel to air their content. Or maybe NBC decides to keep everything for themselves. Given how scripted content is going and the money they are spending on sports rights, they could put everything on the broadcast network and Peacock. Sports used to be exclusive to broadcast, so they might go back to the future regarding how they air sports.1 point

A low-power broadcaster in TV8 Vail, officially K34QB-D Vail on Channel 45, cable channel 92 (but used to be on 8, hence the branding) is shutting down on Friday after a 27-and-a-half-year run. Why do I bring this up? Because this station is owned by... Deerfield Media. Yes, the same Deerfield is mainly a Sinclair sidecar but has no involvement from Sinclair in this station. Not a big loss IMO. I wish CBS dropped 12:30pm too but they're still hanging to their soaps. It just shows that NBC is still king after 12:30am but also... not much people watch after that time anyways (except for maybe Nightline, EDIT: I think it will go back to 11:35pm when Jimmy Kimmel decides to hang it up).1 point

No big loss. It seemed like a placeholder program that was on the level of the Byron Allen repeats that filled the time before it right after The Late Late Show ended. I doubt that CBS News would try and rebroadcast their Evening News during that time, or that affiliates would use it to rebroadcast their 11/10pm shows. NBC getting the 1:37/12:27 slot for that seems ideal after Later ended.1 point

Instead, they'll live off of syndicated crap game shows or garbage programming. Hey, someone has to push the trash talkers and court shows on the unwashed masses. (Also, are there actually twelve episodes of Family Feud every day?) Scripted programming is not in the past; it just often ends up on streaming services because the broadcast networks generally only want shows that have the broadest appeal. Sports and reality shows succeed at that, partly because they're focused on physical ability (sports), competition (most reality shows on the networks), or relationship drama (the farmer wants a wife? Good for him, but absolutely none of my business). On the scripted side, these means a lot of procedurals, both police/crime-solving (CSI, NCIS, the entire Dick Wolf multiverse) and medical (The Pitt, Doc, House, etc.). The more intellectually-stimulating scripted shows wouldn't have a chance of being picked up by the broadcast networks, and cable channels are not grabbing as many of them as they used to as they themselves are dumbing their content down to widen their appeal. (Why do you think BBC America shows Law & Order repeats?)1 point

First Coast News uses Good Morning Jacksonville despite the NBC station being their lead product which simulcasts on ABC. WABC calls its 10am newscast Eyewitness News Mornings at 10, despite Mornings being CBS's AM branding. While it's common practice for local stations to brand their morning newscast in line with the national AM newscast, I don't think it's a requirement or an expectation.1 point

Speaking of out and back in....has anyone been following the awkwardness since Jess Hilarious returned to The Breakfast Club from maternity leave? Jess was picked to replace Angela Yee as she was a popular social media comedian. Shortly after getting the job Jess announced her pregnancy and went on maternity leave. During Jess' time off, her fill in, producer Loren LaRosa (ex TMZ) outperformed her according to listener comments on all of their broadcast platforms. Since Just returned, Loren remains only during Jess' segments, and consistently fills in for her. This ultimately lead to Jess calling out the show's producers on social media, then an on air mediation of the situation. This dilemma reminds me of the Today transition from Deborah Norville to Katie Couric: tension between a new host and her sub following maternity leave. While I respect Jess Hilarious' feelings on this situation, I'm surprised this wasn't addressed behind the scenes in an HR meeting rather than on air. Simple solution: bring Loren on as a fourth host. Several other radio shows like Steve Harvey have more than four hosts.1 point
