Nexstar's WETM has made history by having the first all female, all black weather team -- Don't know what the demographic is for the Elmira, NY area, but you'd think this would've happened in a larger market.. Nonetheless, a great feat indeed!7 points

The police drama overload is because of demographics, not politics. Procedurals are for the elderly what true crime podcasts are for Gen X and millennials. Their lineup has only gotten more lopsided as streaming peels away the audience of everyone under 60. They're also a crutch Paramount uses to hide their utter creative bankruptcy. When they don't have that crutch, you have Network Ten's primetime lineup of MasterChef Australia multiple nights per week and back-to-back episodes of House Hunters on Friday. Or Channel 5's parade of documentaries about air fryers and electric cars that all recycle footage from the previous 20 documentaries about them.2 points

It looks so much better, hope they stay in that set! Also, side note, the Weekend News has a "This Day in History" segment, which uses the 06 headline theme! Only thing now that still shows a slight sign of the old package is the coming up L3.2 points

I think Dr. Phil is realizing how hard it is to run such a network like this. His flagship program is on pause, the evening news is on pause, and 40 employees laid off again. Merit TV seems to be in such financial trouble. Not to mention the backlash against airing all those ICE raids. https://www.wfaa.com/article/news/local/tarrant-county/dr-phil-primetime-summer-hiatus-layoffs/287-d79bc36e-f954-4325-885a-668e5457892b2 points

Went to KMGH. Was ousted when Scripps bought them and subsequently kicked GM Byron Grandy to the curb. Grandy served out a stint at a few Nexstar stations before returning to GM KDVR|KWGN and brought Becker back with him. Becker is doing the job he was never made for - Micromanaging, blindly listening to SmithGeiger, and spending stupid amounts of money for a new set that didn't need to be replaced. Becker doesn't know how to move the ratings dial at all.1 point

Well, the Archdiocese of Boston owns CatholicTV, so in a sense, the Vatican has access to that.1 point

It's probably coming at some point. I've seen it on holiday weekends where they'll just put the WKBN newscast on WYTV. WKBN is merely a license formality since they sold their overkill spectrum in the auction and is hosted on the more market-friendly WYTV. In this case the brand is worth more than gold since WYTV has always lagged and got subsumed by WKBN in 2007. I guess some parting gifts are worse than others. Seems like some stations benefited from it, especially WJW. (Their current set and graphics) They were long overdue for a change with their "parting gift" from Fox getting really stale by the end of the Tribune era...being the O&O set and a heavily mutated graphics package based on the original.1 point

I actually don't mind the color scheme, at least it's something slightly different in what is otherwise another generic 2025 graphics package.1 point

Maurice was anchoring the Special Report coverage for the Hegseth Pentagon Presser this morning... So there is that.1 point

It’s a pretty significant breaking news story this evening and CBS is phoning it in.1 point

I was actually thinking the same after I posted my comment. Not only is it spacious in that atrium, but it has a nice, massive picture window view of some of the urban landscape of that area, as well. That atrium reminds me of the upper floor studio across town that had a gigantic picture window view overlooking Columbus Circle that television productions have used over the years.1 point

Is something going on with News 4 NY studio tonight? The 5 pm show started about 5 min late after several commercials. It was mostly Gilma delivering her script over video and the sound was off. When Gilma was finally on, it was a close in shot that looked more from the newsroom with the background than the actual set. Halfway through the Combs story report, the sound cleared up, including when it was thrown back to Gilma. We'll see if they are in the studio once they are back from more commercials but something definitely seemed off.1 point

Which means she manages sales for a pharmaceutial company and goes around medical facilities selling physicians on their drugs (Wikipedia says they have a chloesterol drug). Probably a lot easier money and schedule for her.1 point

Generally agree with most of what you said, except for two things. I think CBS primetime is probably one of the stronger ones of the traditional broadcast networks. The second is that Pelley wasn’t that great either.1 point
-
I’ll offer my piece: CBS is probably in even worse shape than even the Tisch years. It seems like whatever plagued Viacom in the 2010s has finally claimed CBS (and to an extent, Showtime). As someone said, other than the NFL and college football and basketball, what sports does CBS have to hang its hat on? The Big Ten deal is a massive downgrade compared to those SEC years. They have golf, but post-Tiger Woods, it’s not really popular. Outside of that, it’s mostly stuff that would’ve been on CBS Sports Network a decade ago. Say what you will about the other networks, but they have a robust slate of sports like NBC with the NFL, the NBA, and likely the MLB. Or ABC with the NHL, NFL, college football, etc, all via ESPN. And then there’s the news division. Dear God, the news division. Between wondering who is anchoring CBS Evening News this week, the scandals with 60 minutes, and the curse of Captain Kangaroo that permeates the 7-9am timeslot, CBS News has been a joke post-Cronkite, but especially since Scott Pelley left Evening News and CBS had to revamp its morning show for the 5000th time. Oh, and primetime! Jumping Jesus, primetime! What is primetime on CBS like in 2025? Ten different versions of NCIS, FBI, and Blue Bloods, few if any comedies, and an excuse to give away Chevy Traxs and Hyundai Accents before the 11pm news. Yes, I’ve long accepted that broadcast TV is on life support. However, watching CBS is the equivalent of watching your elderly family member on life support and in pain. It’s that unbearable.1 point

Tough sell for many affiliates. First off in the Midwest, Evening News is already sandwiched in the 30 minutes between local newscasts (I know it's a different story on the coasts). Second, the network would have to take that time away from affiliates who almost guaranteed have something that likely either gets higher ratings (i.e. WCCO and WDJT showing Wheel Of Fortune), or they have a local newscast in that slot where the station gets to keep all the ad revenue for themselves (i.e. KELO, KBJR, KXMB) and not have to share with the network. Same argument for "forcing" the other networks to follow along with something that this panel likes, but still can't perform in the ratings. You first need to be able to offer them something that consistently proves to be better than what they currently have. If it were an optional add-on, perhaps you get a few affiliates to dump Inside Edition or ET. But if I had Wheel, and you wanted me to replace that with an add-on to a distant 3rd place newscast, I would tell you to pound sand.1 point

West Palm Beach is now going wall to wall in the aftermath of the tornadoes. WFTS appears to have the most on the ground coverage during landfall.1 point

It's been a taxing couple of weeks, so I can understand them working in some down time, if you will, for their respective teams (both on the ground and in studio). There's only so much that can be said/done until the storm makes landfall.1 point
-
Agreed. The Internet's 24/7 news cycle makes non-stop storm broadcasting somewhat unnecessary. Conversely, storm coverage is the draw factor for local stations especially in natural disaster prone areas like Florida. Unless Tampa outlets are using relaxed coverage as an opportunity to evacuate and let the staff tend to their lives, this is puzzling. Even more peculiar: the markets getting the outer effects of the storm, not the market getting landfall are going wall to wall? This might be a domino effect. Once one Tampa station decides to go nonstop, the others might follow to be competitive.1 point
-
Both The Weather Channel and Fox Weather dropped live coverage overnight. To see this on the night before landfall is just bizarre. We're in a different era now of non-24/7 coverage I guess.1 point
-
I don't understand the lack of coverage in Tampa. Not even on screen weather warnings. WWSB is the only station that has them constantly and WTSP is the only one to have a crawl. Everyone else is basically status quo with the occasional cut-in. Even from a business sense, local storm coverage would be an ample opportunity to run the plethora of local political ads. The Orlando and SWFL stations are enjoying that opportunity greatly. It doesn't make any sense. Edit: Basically every Waffle House location in the Tampa / St. Petersburg area down to SWFL is closed. If that's the case, this storm is going to be BAD.1 point
-
As of Tuesday evening, non stop coverage in Ft Myers and Orlando, Tampa apparently not. Perhaps this is to allow station employees a chance to tend to their families and belongings?1 point
-
Yes, WTOG until August of last year, as they winded down CW affiliations in their owned markets (including Detroit, only to return last month) had Tampa Bay NOW which was produced by CBS O&O WFOR in Miami. Now, newscasts for former CW affiliates from CBS are pretty much now just in markets where they have a sister CBS O&O station.1 point

Wall-to-Wall coverage started last night here in the Orlando DMA as well with most stations going thru the night last night.1 point

Looking at their website, they appear to be relaying WESH. That said, as a weather nerd watching way up north, WESH has been doing a tremendous job so far (and what I am currently streaming in my office)- WFTV and WKMG have also been solid.1 point
-
WTSP is in a super bad spot. They're in St. Petersburg, even worse. More likely they'll have to go inside WMOR's studios again.1 point
-
If Southwest Florida is affected (again), it will be another test of the WINK facility, as they even took on water from Helene. At least the other stations have out of town resources to fall back on if they have to abandon their facilities. Given the vulnerability of Tampa and St. Petersburg, how much at risk are their stations there? WFLA may be in a bad spot, so I'd bet they get WKRG or WMBB on standby to help out with coverage.1 point

I'm kind of surprised that with the new graphics that there wasn't a plan for a combined logo. I get that Hearst doesn't do the "combined" branding (ex: like Gray does with Dakota News Now, Valley News Live, etc)- but something where for emergency coverage like a hurricane showed the NBC2 and ABC7 logos side by side? Is it because viewers in the area already subliminally know the two are co-owned (or more likely don't care when a Cat 5 is headed their way?)1 point
-
The Weather Channel still has the AMHQ team live as of 1pm ET. I haven't seen them use this schedule for any storm coverage since they moved to the current schedule. The only thing I'm thinking is that maybe their plan is to stay live one hour later until 2am ET tonight, to avoid bringing in an overnight crew like they normally do from 1am-5am ET if they were to stay live all night.1 point

Bumping this thread as I caught a little of "Fox SA". Even the way they pronounce "SA" is very much like the Spanish word "ese". Keep on pandering Sinclair!1 point

Backing up previous comment on privating the video. I know SA has a large Hispanic population, but "Puro San Antonio" seems more appropriate for a Telemundo affiliate or whatever else they have in SA.1 point

I've noticed that too and when they display the names on the lower thirds it typically only lasts five seconds which is just long enough to read it. I'm willing to guess their lack of use is mainly due to the fact that their newscasts are not personality driven as opposed to say WJZ's morning news with Don and Marty. However their PoP promos they do display the anchors names while they cut from footage of anchor speaking. I am also thankful they don't put the anchors twitter accounts in the lower thirds because the blue twitter T logo does not look good against the background in addition the @ sign looks a bit messed up.1 point

Recently I've noticed WBAL doesn't use talent opens/rejoins anymore it seems. They used to use all of their talent rejoins/opens when they switched to the new graphics (they've used each talent at least one time) then they switched to only using the 5PM talent, and now instead of talents they use promos for streaming news casts, 11 News Today, and 11 News at 11PM and now in-place of the 5PM talent at 5:30, they just use the 5PM open. Just something I've noticed recently.1 point

Not virtual - although it was designed to give it that look with the monitor walls. It's just Hearst's way of being creative using a green screen - it would have been perfectly fine with out the monitor wall. I've seen it in use at WCVB, WESH and I believe WPBF.1 point

Here in AZ you do need a map. Counties are huge in size (we have 15, 11 are in the Phoenix DMA) and the NWS likes to issue warnings for non-county areas here. We have 40 different forecast areas in AZ, including "Northeast Plateaus and Mesas (N of Highway 264)", "Southern Gila/Tonto National Forest Foothills" and "Northwest Deserts" (full list).1 point
