Nexstar's WETM has made history by having the first all female, all black weather team -- Don't know what the demographic is for the Elmira, NY area, but you'd think this would've happened in a larger market.. Nonetheless, a great feat indeed!7 points

The police drama overload is because of demographics, not politics. Procedurals are for the elderly what true crime podcasts are for Gen X and millennials. Their lineup has only gotten more lopsided as streaming peels away the audience of everyone under 60. They're also a crutch Paramount uses to hide their utter creative bankruptcy. When they don't have that crutch, you have Network Ten's primetime lineup of MasterChef Australia multiple nights per week and back-to-back episodes of House Hunters on Friday. Or Channel 5's parade of documentaries about air fryers and electric cars that all recycle footage from the previous 20 documentaries about them.2 points

It looks so much better, hope they stay in that set! Also, side note, the Weekend News has a "This Day in History" segment, which uses the 06 headline theme! Only thing now that still shows a slight sign of the old package is the coming up L3.2 points

I think Dr. Phil is realizing how hard it is to run such a network like this. His flagship program is on pause, the evening news is on pause, and 40 employees laid off again. Merit TV seems to be in such financial trouble. Not to mention the backlash against airing all those ICE raids. https://www.wfaa.com/article/news/local/tarrant-county/dr-phil-primetime-summer-hiatus-layoffs/287-d79bc36e-f954-4325-885a-668e5457892b2 points

That problem shows up on CBS during the summer with multiple nights of Big Brother. Heck, it could probably also be blamed for the hilariously-inappropriate-for-CBS Love Island.1 point

While that’s still true in theory, the NFL has loosened its scheduling in recent years and now, it’s not uncommon to see an NFC vs NFC matchup on CBS or an AFC divisional battle on Fox.1 point

I actually don't mind the color scheme, at least it's something slightly different in what is otherwise another generic 2025 graphics package.1 point

CBS did eventually do a long special report with Margaret Brennan anchoring. But it was interesting to see the BBC streaming simulcast, I had never seen them do that before.1 point

It’s a pretty significant breaking news story this evening and CBS is phoning it in.1 point

I'm getting the feeling there should be more competition for weather networks. Both Fox Weather and The Weather Channel suck balls.1 point

The Chevron strike-down has hit the FCC's decisions; by a 6-3 party-line vote today, the Supreme Court ruled that lower courts can now decide cases without FCC input (link from my employer with their view; here's another view from Broadband Breakfast). This was about the FCC declaring that online junk faxes didn't need to comply with the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (the case they ruled on now goes back to the 9th Circuit), and though I'm not law-versed by any means (and I would appreciate more clarity), this seems like a major shift for the FCC's rulemaking process well beyond telecoms where their word is now not exactly set in stone.1 point

Just for fun, I checked to see how far Spokane is from Glendive. Using KXGN's building as the Glendive end, Spokane is about 595 miles away, or about the same distance as Duluth, Omaha, a point 15 miles north of Pueblo, CO, and over halfway up into Saskatchewan. You could draw a straight line from Glendive through downtown Minneapolis and not hit 595 miles till you're just over the river in Wisconsin. So, yeah, Spokane is just a bit too far from Glendive.1 point

This is broadcast design today, empty depthless sets with video walls to offer flexible backgrounds in leiu of furniture. I don't mind video walls when they are used in tandem with actual set pieces. The glossy floor I like, the set of The View set has it too. News/tv is a very copycat industry especially with set design. For example in the 90s GMA much like Today and The View followed the trend of layered living room sets with multiple furniture pieces to mimic a full home. Some call this cluttered, but I like how grand it looks. While that era probably won't return because of cost, I think a good medium is today's The View set. While it's still tons of video walls they add enough furniture to have layered depth of field looking shots that don't make the studio look barren. Still the current GMA set is the best looking morning news set in a long time. The last time I really liked an AM news set was studio 1A in 2013 before they turned it orange.1 point

Yes, this is a real YouTube video, but I didn't have this on my bingo card. Days ago, CBS News released a YouTube video of... Walter Cronkite and the CBS Evening News from June 1971, set to ASMR on a rainy night in New York City. The video is nearly 3 hours and 20 minutes long.1 point

I’ll offer my piece: CBS is probably in even worse shape than even the Tisch years. It seems like whatever plagued Viacom in the 2010s has finally claimed CBS (and to an extent, Showtime). As someone said, other than the NFL and college football and basketball, what sports does CBS have to hang its hat on? The Big Ten deal is a massive downgrade compared to those SEC years. They have golf, but post-Tiger Woods, it’s not really popular. Outside of that, it’s mostly stuff that would’ve been on CBS Sports Network a decade ago. Say what you will about the other networks, but they have a robust slate of sports like NBC with the NFL, the NBA, and likely the MLB. Or ABC with the NHL, NFL, college football, etc, all via ESPN. And then there’s the news division. Dear God, the news division. Between wondering who is anchoring CBS Evening News this week, the scandals with 60 minutes, and the curse of Captain Kangaroo that permeates the 7-9am timeslot, CBS News has been a joke post-Cronkite, but especially since Scott Pelley left Evening News and CBS had to revamp its morning show for the 5000th time. Oh, and primetime! Jumping Jesus, primetime! What is primetime on CBS like in 2025? Ten different versions of NCIS, FBI, and Blue Bloods, few if any comedies, and an excuse to give away Chevy Traxs and Hyundai Accents before the 11pm news. Yes, I’ve long accepted that broadcast TV is on life support. However, watching CBS is the equivalent of watching your elderly family member on life support and in pain. It’s that unbearable.1 point

It's been a taxing couple of weeks, so I can understand them working in some down time, if you will, for their respective teams (both on the ground and in studio). There's only so much that can be said/done until the storm makes landfall.1 point
-
Both The Weather Channel and Fox Weather dropped live coverage overnight. To see this on the night before landfall is just bizarre. We're in a different era now of non-24/7 coverage I guess.1 point
-
The Weather Channel still has the AMHQ team live as of 1pm ET. I haven't seen them use this schedule for any storm coverage since they moved to the current schedule. The only thing I'm thinking is that maybe their plan is to stay live one hour later until 2am ET tonight, to avoid bringing in an overnight crew like they normally do from 1am-5am ET if they were to stay live all night.1 point

Backing up previous comment on privating the video. I know SA has a large Hispanic population, but "Puro San Antonio" seems more appropriate for a Telemundo affiliate or whatever else they have in SA.1 point

While the weather side got new graphics, this week, the 10am Daytime Chicago got a heavy update, a little earlier this month. Before (9/13/21): AND... Also, the first promos are out for the new, 3pm Spotlight Chicago, and I'm glad to see that the program will being going in a different direction, graphics-wise.1 point

WBNS: "Am I a joke to you?" But yes, I concur. I suspect this is an in-house pack given all these unnecessary extras. This could quite be the worst in-house job a Nexstar station has done.1 point

Why the hell does anyone seem to like this on YT? This is just TOO busy and inconsistent, even the lower thirds are hard to look at and don't get me started on the intro! Trust me I like 3D news opens these days but this is NOT how you do it! Who approved this and Areil, KHNL is the only station that it works with!1 point

Maybe it's just me but I really dislike these picture in picture over the shoulder video graphics that seemed to have been rolled out in the past year at various Hearst stations. Here's a iPad screenshot from tonight's 11 PM newscast on WBAL showing various weather graphics: It looks a bit better on television in HD. But, I don't understand why they use it to show either live helicopter footage or a taped piece from the ground. Why would they choose to relegate good footage that is procured and transmitted to the station in HD to such a tiny picture frame? I'd rather they air the video full screen with the anchor doing the voice over. If they are gung-ho on keeping the anchor in frame why don't they put the footage on the 100" rear projection screen behind the anchor. In the past they have blocked the camera angle where the anchor presenting the segment fits perfectly with the monitor behind them keeping everything in the 4:3 safe zone.1 point

I've noticed that too and when they display the names on the lower thirds it typically only lasts five seconds which is just long enough to read it. I'm willing to guess their lack of use is mainly due to the fact that their newscasts are not personality driven as opposed to say WJZ's morning news with Don and Marty. However their PoP promos they do display the anchors names while they cut from footage of anchor speaking. I am also thankful they don't put the anchors twitter accounts in the lower thirds because the blue twitter T logo does not look good against the background in addition the @ sign looks a bit messed up.1 point

Recently I've noticed WBAL doesn't use talent opens/rejoins anymore it seems. They used to use all of their talent rejoins/opens when they switched to the new graphics (they've used each talent at least one time) then they switched to only using the 5PM talent, and now instead of talents they use promos for streaming news casts, 11 News Today, and 11 News at 11PM and now in-place of the 5PM talent at 5:30, they just use the 5PM open. Just something I've noticed recently.1 point

Here in AZ you do need a map. Counties are huge in size (we have 15, 11 are in the Phoenix DMA) and the NWS likes to issue warnings for non-county areas here. We have 40 different forecast areas in AZ, including "Northeast Plateaus and Mesas (N of Highway 264)", "Southern Gila/Tonto National Forest Foothills" and "Northwest Deserts" (full list).1 point

I don't like how their ticker is three lines. Line 3 is redundant since it repeats the same information from line 1. All of the stations here have one line tickers for severe weather; and one of them has a one-liner with a map of the viewing area. I just think that ticker WBAL uses is way too busy. They also tell us that there is a winter weather warning twice. Talk about redundacy in more ways than one.1 point
