Good riddance to garbage TV and a waste of space IMO. I feel for those who'll lose their jobs tho6 points

The missing time at 11PM makes for an easy, modification-free repeat in the middle of the night. The nights you see a time/temp, that show probably doesn't air again.3 points

The last of Belo has been sold to Hearst. The Dallas Morning News will join other major Texas newspapers in the Hearst empire. Shareholders of the DallasNews Corp will receive $14/share and the paper will be taken private.3 points

yeesh. Seems like a fantasy or offshore TV station come to life in Miami. Hopefully "ABC Miami" will be their main brand, but they have to educate the OTA & cable/satellite viewers on channel position. "ABC Miami" is enough for OTT. I would imagine WPLG would continue on YouTubeTV. WJXT has always been carried as an independent so carrying WPLG post-switch should be a given. ABC would pull the strings for getting "ABC Miami" on there.2 points

I watched it live and had to double back to verify that I saw what I saw. It was 6:01 and 69° and the poor meteorologist had no idea.1 point

Double yeesh. How long before they elect "must carry" status with cable and satellite? They better be streaming all of their shows on the apps or else they have really screwed the pooch with this move.1 point

Apologies if this isn't the right place but I also didn't want to create an entire new thread but, if there is one thing that's bothered me with the new look for the Evening News, it's the intro, it so simple, so, here's an intro concept!1 point

Oh, jeez, I forgot they added 6:30pm. I'm never up or watching then. Extra was previously in that slot.1 point

WKMG loses two on-air talent folks in a span of days. First, Crystal Moyer who's leaving WKMG after 5 years there later today (as of the time I write this post). https://www.clickorlando.com/news/local/2025/06/25/thank-you-news-6-gets-ready-to-say-farewell-to-longtime-morning-anchor/?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=snd&utm_content=wkmg6&fbclid=IwY2xjawLS5PNleHRuA2FlbQIxMQABHhenP7c_1K0bxmgKgC5KtLn9AfZwzuvSPyfCm6KTqmruSfmt8sT5jt1nm_MU_aem_fTe-Jk7_86xBB8s7up4gxw Now, its longtime morning and noon anchor Bridgett Ellison who left yesterday after 14 years there. https://www.clickorlando.com/news/local/2025/07/02/wkmg-news-6-celebrates-anchors-14-years-of-service-to-central-florida/1 point

Ed Ansin did not want to redevelop WSVN property. One of my sources at the time explained in detail back in 2008, when one day Ed Ansin showed up at WTVJ to tour the building after WPLG announced they are buying the station, but I can't find the emails. What kept Sunbeam from getting the WIOD site was the old man refusing to pay $1.5 mil for it in 2002. I know from someone who was involved the old man balked at the price being too high. He was offered first dibs, even with his son Andrew pushing hard for the performance Ed said no. Then the owner sold to a local developer for $1.3 mil and announced condos. But Ed Ansin told him (and used WSVN to bludgeon him publicly) that he can't build anything on the lot without his permission because he had an agreement with the previous owner that requires his consent first, a condo building would be disruptive to WSVN and that is that. Turned out the developer offered to accommodate, including I believe a parking carve out for the station that can fit the ENG trucks, at his expense. Ed still said no. After the WSVN story aired and made him look bad, the developer decided to spite - he forbade WSVN staff to park on his property, majority of parking for WSVN staff was on it. That's why Sunbeam owns that building across the road. Employees parked there, and had to cross heavy traffic til 2021.The developer also removed the guard at the entrance and one of the billboards. Later, he announced hell make a strip club on the WOID site. A nod to sexed up female anchors at the station. Which caused old Ed to get North Bay Village mayor involved, used WSVN, Belkys Nerey and other female anchors as hammers to nip that plan, and it worked. After suing the developer, around 2008-2009, Ed bought the note on the property from the lender and tried to foreclose but I think failed. After Ed died 7/2020 one of the first things Andrew did after inheriting, is buy the lot from the developer... for $29 million in March 2021 And here we are.1 point

All KTTC newscasts are already seen on KMNF with the exception of 6 and 10pm weeknights, I believe as simulcasts of KEYC. (KTTC's 5pm is not seen there.)1 point

It looks like another update to the diagrid package, only appearing more rectangular. And the Strive music package is still being used, just with newer cuts. What I am referring to is a complete overhaul of the graphics and music, like when the diagrid graphics and Strive debuted in 2012, or when the rings graphics package was introduced in 2004 (in that case, however, most stations started using NewsMusic Central's Hearst TV News Music Package before switching from camera v2 to rings). Only other difference between this update and the last two is that WESH is not the first station to be using the updated graphics.1 point

An updated Hearst graphics package already debuted this year. So far, it’s only in use at WBBH, but I expect a full rollout next year.1 point

Editorials still exist. KOCO still does them and their latest example is inducting five folks into their KOCO 5 Hall of Fame.1 point

I was watching the continuous coverage online on both station's YouTube channels. For the most part, it was 90% WBBH graphics and 10% WZVN. On WZVN's channel, they were showing everyone in WBBH's studio with the WZVN bug.1 point

I haven't worked in that market in a long time, so much could have changed, but from what I recall - NBC was the favorite child, and ABC got the leftovers/looklives, at least in the evenings. And it makes sense, considering NBC has a much more massive news output. But creative lead choices can always lead to making things work. I don't recall how they handled mornings where there's the most overlap. (Although there was a time in the 2008-2010 recession that hit SW Florida worse than most parts of the country when they went down to one AM newscast simulcast on both stations) When I worked in a different market where there were dueling morning newscasts coming out of the same building, it required coordination among producers to make sure they weren't stepping on each other's toes. For a big enough story, you'd occasionally have two reporters on the same story so both could lead with it, and in very rare circumstances - a mini internal generic live shot where both producers agreed to a start time for a live shot and the reporter would get counted down - and they'd start talking whether both stations anchors had stopped talking or not.1 point

I always wonder how the two stations navigate being a duopoly with separately branded newscasts on at competing times with what I presume are the same reporters. Are they both airing the same packages and then the reporters front them on both stations at different time slots?1 point

It sounds like Hearst is also toying with the idea of “one manager in charge of several stations” money-saving concept that Scripps embraced. KCRA (Sacramento) news director Derek Schnell is now a regional news director who’s also responsible for KSBW (Monterey, CA) and KOAT (Albuquerque), and still has to be ND for KCRA. This gives us the first look at severe weather coverage under the new Diagrid 2.0 that WBBH debuted not too long ago.1 point
-
With the coverage of Hurricane Helene, WBBH & WZVN are sharing resources, including reporters and meteorologists. Right now I'm watching the weather coverage and WZVN Chief Met John Patrick is in the WBBH studio helping out... And the live coverage on WBBH is simulcast on WZVN.1 point

Another legend in Cincinnati is heading for semi-retirement. WLWT's Courtis Fuller is leaving the anchor desk but not the station entirely. https://www.wlwt.com/article/courtis-fuller-retiring-anchor-desk-lets-talk-cincy/619512701 point

Hearst is laying off staffers involved in their "Very Local" FAST channels.... https://deadline.com/2024/08/hearts-television-very-local-layoffs-1236034990/ I wasn't much a fan of these channels to begin with. They never tended to have news on them at the time it was airing on their stations. Maybe now they'll make them a little more geared to their news operations.1 point

The time brokerage between the two stations started in 1994, and the terms of the TBA, while not allowable today, are grandfathered by the FCC because it was established before the federal government put new rules for the operation of TBAs/LMAs/etc. The transfer of WBBH from Waterman to Hearst included assigning the existing WZVN time brokerage agreement to Hearst.1 point
-
WZVN/WBBH is an interesting duopoly as its an ABC & NBC station that share talent with newscasts on at competing times. How was this allowed by the FCC?1 point
-
It's a group of FAST channels streaming talk, court and reality shows. It's available on Pluto TV. There's a subchannel I noticed recently for WPSG as well.1 point

Welp, I didn't see that coming. I guess Scripps didn't want to pay for a station that small. I would hope it's the first time ever, at least on the TV side.0 points

Congratulations to Jessica. It seemed like she was the favored internal candidate as she was doing it three nights during the week while she was still doing weekends. I'm still surprised that it took them half a year to make it official, and it makes me wonder how seriously they might have been looking at external options. Not a fan of the solo anchor thing, especially at 11pm.0 points

I went on to a few other stations' websites, and yes, there are other stations still using the old opens – WESH, KSBW, KCRA, WLKY, KETV, WPTZ, WCVB, KOCO. WTAE also looks to be using a mix of both. WYFF and WISN are using the new open.0 points
-
WGAL uses a mix of both. Some opens are the new ... some are the old. Also, no other Hearst station I know did such a long close like that. More stations should do that. What would've been better was the KABC-TV Eyewitness Theme as that closing music -- Matt0 points

A year or two ago, KOCO launched a midday newscast at 11:00am but it was temporary to make way for a 4:00pm newscast. It looks like they're bringing it back and it looks to be permanent. https://www.koco.com/article/koco-5-relaunching-11am-newscast-cameron-sibert-sabrina-bates-joseph-neubauer/619959870 points
