Exactly this. He tried to expand from an hour talk show and apparently nobody wanted to subscribe to his channel (or give out their email address to stream it on the TBN website). If someone wants to be the fool to part with their money to keep Dr. Phil afloat, they know exactly what they're doing at this point and that like most investments, it will likely turn out badly. We haven't heard the side of the creditors yet, and I'm sure they're not going to encourage people to trust him again.2 points

Based on the "audience" numbers for Merit Street, it does not seem many wanted to find him. Some people just don't know how to read a room. If he has money to burn, that's his problem.2 points
-
You, and I, and others on this board may feel that way. But we can't speak for everyone else. There is an audience Phil is trying to reach, and if that audience wants his content they will find it. Remember that we now live in an era of narrowcasting, not broadcasting. Now, we can debate on whether this was a smart business move on McGraw's part, but that story will unfold in the long-term. But if you want him to go away, just don't watch.2 points

If this was 20-25 years ago, Univision or Telemundo would have snapped up the station to give the station the prime real estate it deserves for leading the market.2 points

Couldn't he just go back making the Dr. Phil show? This is getting annoying at this point.1 point

Somehow Dr Phil is gonna try again and is launching a new media channel, Envoy Media1 point

I’ll raise you one. KDFW airs it at 11am too. We’re Market 4. In other news, ABC News is launching a new D+-exclusive show calledWhat You Need To Know. (I couldn’t find a proper place to put it, so the GMA thread was the closest place I could).1 point

Spain (the last Running of the Bulls was today until next year) La 1 will have its version of The Pyramid starting later today, and it will be the €100,000 format. https://www.rtve.es/rtve/20250704/rtve-prepara-piramide-nuevo-concurso-diario-para-tardes-1-presentado-por-itziar-miranda/16651204.shtml1 point

I just read the ticker. Turns out it (and the stream) is moving to 18.2. Sunbeam is simply leasing out 18.1.1 point

WDFL streams live online. Boy, will their quality be 1,000,000x better than what they're airing now once ABC Miami shows up. This stream probably won't work anymore either once the switch takes place. https://wdfltv.lightcast.com/player/52136/521361 point

Local 10 News has been running op-eds from their GM Bert Medina announcing the new newscasts. Interestingly they will still do heavy news out put on weekends. Notably a full 5-11am block, as well as a 5, 6:30 and 9pm on weekend evenings. They will also have weekend PM sportscast at 9:30 and 11:30 pm.1 point

They probably had no choice in the matter as YTTV, Hulu and Fubo were under no obligation to continue carrying an independent station. And why would they? It's only a matter of time before Berkshire Hathaway puts WPLG up for sale in a liquidation.1 point
-
Even I forget sometimes that WPLG is no longer part of Graham... ...so BH Media was not grandfathered in like it was with Graham and WJXT. From the getgo, WJXT AND WJCW were both available on YTTV because Graham made that deal before they launched. WPLG's divestiture was several years before YTTV existed, so they only had their ABC affiliation as a key to get them on the streaming services. Getting retransmission payments based on a hyper-local news presence may be a disaster in the making, so they will probably opt for "must-carry" status to keep themselves on pay TV providers. By doing so does lessen their leverage to get on "channel 10", but the way cable and satellite TV work nowadays (being all digital), there's really no excuse not to be, unless the providers want to purposely stick it to them by denying that channel slot.1 point

Seems like the answer would be contained in those two changes happening at roughly the same time. No one is going to make a big deal of it, at least in most cases. If the numbers aren’t there, they aren’t there. They’ve made it easier (a relative term) on Karen Rogers by having Pellman handle the first half hour (outside of days off), with her also typically having the 10 am. They dialed back the third-wheel anchor concept for that show with the recent assignment changes. This seems a fairly straightforward case of fishing where the fish are.1 point

Yes, he also co-anchored with Caroline Goggin on a Sunday morning two weeks ago.1 point

Yeah if I recall we’ve been (or were?) seeing a trend of stations cutting back on the 4am hour nationwide. I believe KPRC in Houston cut the 4am hour due to staffing shortages and launched a 7am streaming newscast. Just one example I can recall off the top of my head.1 point

Is there any reason that we know of for why the start of Action News Mornings was pushed back to 4:30 earlier this year? Not that I have a problem with it, but it's kind of odd for them to get rid of a newscast. NBC10 got rid of the whole 4:00 AM hour around the same time, so their morning show is only two hours now. Good Day is the only show that still starts at 4:00. Are stations in other markets also cutting back on their morning shows?1 point

WPLG being dropped from YouTubeTV, Hulu, etc. at the start isn't surprising. The network negotiates the retransmission consent rights for all the affiliates. So, WPLG was covered by the agreement ABC made with Google. No ABC. No agreement for Local 10. They will have to hammer out deals with all the vMVPDs. To be honest, not being on YouTubeTV isn't the end of the world. While it is the largest platform of its kind by far, it has about 9.4 million subs nationwide. There are 125 million TV households in America. So YouTubeTV has about 7% of the national population. Let's assume that a metropolitan area like Miami skews slightly higher than, say, a rural Midwest market where internet connectivity may be slower. Even if YouTubeTV has 8 or 9% of the Miami market, WPLG can survive. But it might be enough to shave off just enough viewers to cause some pain. On the flipside, WSVN's ABC feed is immediately covered by all ABC agreements once that feed is live. It will be interesting to see if it is up and running on day one. (It should be since they have had plenty of lead time)1 point

The thing with these non-major network broadcast stations on Youtube TV and such is that they either has a deal with the owners of these stations or not. So this means they do not have a deal Berkshire Hathaway.1 point
-
I watched it live and had to double back to verify that I saw what I saw. It was 6:01 and 69° and the poor meteorologist had no idea.1 point
-
I'm gonna be curious about that myself. At first, I suspect ABC won't be immediately available, but there will be time before they shuffle everything along, at which point ABC will be available. This move will also affect WPLG internationally via the Bahamas, USVI, or other places that carry it for the ABC feed.1 point

The missing time at 11PM makes for an easy, modification-free repeat in the middle of the night. The nights you see a time/temp, that show probably doesn't air again.1 point

Correction: Both networks are also being added to additional Gray stations. Between Scripps and Gray, Atlanta, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Colorado Springs and Tucson are the only markets with new 365BLK and Defy affiliates where both groups overlap.1 point

I suspect that such will be the case if the deal otherwise cannot go ahead. They probably designed the deal with potential "out" options. Grand Junction, Lafayette and Twin Falls have no concerns. KKTV could also go to 30.2 for better coverage in Pueblo as well.1 point

Yes, WILX did do news for WSYM before the Scripps takeover. I think this is great for WSYM.. They totally got the shaft from Scripps... Especially when they were having WXMI do their weather for awhile. The only good thing that KKTV will get out of it is hopefully a brand change. Some point this year, they changd their branding to KKTV 11 Alert News and Weather... Not sure what is worse, First Alert News or Alert News....1 point

With today's news, I will NOT be shocked if Marcelle Fontenot and Jim Hummel leave the last of the crap that is KADN/KLAF and return to KATC under new Gray Media ownership. I wouldn't be shocked in the slightest.1 point

I'm sure KUSA and KTVD would have to be pried from TEGNA's cold, dead hands. KUSA has been their baby for decades.1 point
-
WSYM had its news come from WILX until Scripps acquired WXMI if I recall correctly, so it is like back to square one there. I think the Colorado issue for Gray was that they had zero pathway into Denver. They would have either had to deal with Tegna (who might be looking for assets themselves) or with CBS (which would have been an expensive acquisition or would have required trading crown jewels).1 point

Sure enough this new market 7 newsroom is hiring MSK's (MMJ's)! I was surprised to see a multimedia journalist posting for WAGA Fox 5 as-well. The days of top 10 markets being a relief from one man banding are slowing fading away.1 point

Exactly this. The days of needing a 50k sqft purpose-built television facility are over. Do you have a space with high enough ceilings? You have a studio space. A massive high-ceiling, TV friendly newsroom where everyone has a cubicle and a row of edit bays for photogs are leftovers from tape to tape editing and limited live trucks. Should there be workspaces for field crews? Sure. But if your model is community reporters, the last place you want reporters is lingering in the newsroom. (Honestly, most newsroom shots are bleak these days because an empty newsroom is basically a well-lit Dunder Mifflin Paper Company) Do you need all the space for racks of servers that were necessary 15-20 years ago? Nope. The cloud and hubs shrink the technical operation space substantially.1 point

One of Houston’s bests is returning to TV at a rival station. Ilona Carson spent 16 years at KTRK ABC13 before leaving in 2021. Later this month, she’ll be the new morning anchor at KHOU11 with Jacob Rascon (another channel 13 alum). https://www.instagram.com/p/DMF5JsVALEP/?igsh=MXM0cnlmbXg5c3g3MA==0 points

It looks like WYTV has ceded to WKBN doing their news on the weekends. I've seen it done on holidays, but I wonder if it's a temporary thing, or a sign of more things to come....0 points
