In DC, Gannett did a number on WUSA long before Tegna was created. Sinclair destroying WJLA after Allbritton made something of them is what brought WUSA back up a few pegs.2 points

Pac-12 and CW are extending their partnership thru the 2030-31 season. In addition to more football games, men's and women's basketball will join the lineup. CW will have the semifinals and championship games on the women's side.2 points

Here's a list of the current contracts that Gray holds (including affiliation agreements and their expiration dates) https://publicfiles.fcc.gov/api/manager/download/f3b17ed2-ba72-2238-e3ea-5059313c19e9/95931e93-1049-436d-bd95-f3c7d73029b9.pdf It says WUAB is under agreement until 2027 with the CW. How was Nexstar able to swoop in and grab it back for themselves to put on WBNX?1 point

At two stations where I've worked, the bold opens were recorded 10 minutes prior to the show so retakes could be done in case something failed.1 point

One of the nuggets that I deduced from the Block-Gray paperwork is that WHAS is the 4th place station in Louisville, with WLKY leading, WDRB in second, and WAVE in third. I always thought WHAS was better (and one of the better Tegna stations) unless Tegna REALLY drove them into the ground. It's going to be interesting to see when the Nexstar paperwork comes out and they make their case on how they can acquire these stations with little regulatory opposition.1 point

So Anne-Sophie is going to be an interviewer for Sunday programs on M6 plus coverage of major primetime events. Plus, she'll do a 6-8 p.m. program on RTL Radio that'll be divided into news from 6-7:15 followed by analysis and debate from 7:15-8 p.m. I've become such a fan of her's over recent years and more so after her exit (and the reasons for it) came out.1 point

Is this legit? I know they were trying to make the transition pretty seamless for viewers but I didn’t realize they would be using the WNT theme. That is something for sure.1 point

The Hill, historically center right, was unbiased. Since bought be Nexstar, they have made a far right turn, often serving up propaganda or bias supporting this regime. It's not the same objective source as it used to be. Often they just prevent one side, trump's side, which is far from unbiased. It is a shame. But it is a watch out in terms of how Nexstar creates coverage that they subtly curry favor.1 point

I get the business intent of doing a straight knockoff of ABC WNT - it's what viewers expect on that channel at that hour and they only had a few months to pull it together with little to no capital investment - but I think I'm still a little shocked that it is really that much of a knockoff. I gave up trying to believe TV news is driven by an actual strategy when I left the business almost a decade ago, but one would think this program slowly develops its own identity which makes watching worthwhile. Not all knockoffs are equal. Will this be Kirkland Signature World News or Great Value?1 point

Ellen Leyva will be missed for sure, she's been one of my favorites at 7. Wishing her the very best in her next chapter.1 point

I was watching the news on ch 7 earlier. Ellen Leyva is leaving the station in a few months. Have not seen any articles about it yet, since it was just announced earlier. Just found it. https://abc7.com/post/abc7-anchor-ellen-leyva-retire-29-incredible-years/15890532/1 point

I live by this simple rule: If you don't have anything nice to say about something or someone, then don't say anything.** **Personal exceptions are allowed. For me it's my former spouse, congestion tolling in New York City, and the incoming president.1 point

Chances are you're not in the show's target demo. If you aren't, and you don't watch the show, then there is no reason for you to complain.1 point

Oh cool, more fights and heated arguments. Again, it should've been canceled a long time ago, and yet is being expanded. I really don't get it.1 point

ABC7 morning anchor Leslie Sykes celebrated 30 years with the station today and it just shows that Disney really cares about their employees.1 point

He merely suggested she be added as co-anchor with Marc. He's not breaking any news.1 point

Given that the 11pm weekday newscasts on KABC are fast paced and minimalistic with music and graphics (especially when teasing stories before commercial breaks), it will be interesting to see whether or not the talent opens make it to these newscasts.1 point
-
I don’t know when exactly it started this week but KABC brought back talent opens to the newscasts for the first time since 2012. I just caught one at 4:30 this evening.1 point
-
They're being simulcast on KGO right now due to techincal difficulties over there.1 point
-
Yeah they used the old 2012 morning theme for the 7AM stream as well. The only rationale I see behind the WABC music adoption is to keep the West and East largest cities streamlined and sorta unified in a way on their appearance, so if someone from New York tunes in they'll recognize the Eyewitness News theme right away and vice versa.1 point

And despite all the similarities now the sets are sill different. KABC *tops WABC in that reguard, although their *video wall feed is beginning to look grainy.1 point

I think KGO does them too, but I don't see them as much as in LA with the 7 label pins. Ofc KFSN started it a few years ago, though I don't see there anchors wearing it a lot perhaps i'm not looking close enough. I noticed with clips of KGO from the '90s to early 00s to as far up as a few years ago some of the anchors don't wear them. I feel like KGO more laxed then LA becasue KABC must mandate it.1 point
-
I didn't realize NY and Chicago were less formal with the pins. Looks like KABC has kept them going consistently 70s to today. You'd think CA being more laid back would have been more in and out with it than NY / Chicago but you're right - they are the most consistent with it. I think it's a nice touch that adds professionalism and reinforces the brand.1 point

It is basically that. New Yorkers have a lot of colloquialisms and have a relaxed way of referring to things sometimes, and one of those is referring to WABC as "Channel 7", especially for the older generations, they identify ABC 7 as "Channel 7" not sure how much longer people will continue to say "Channel 7" since these days we don't "tune" channels anymore everything is digital so perhaps in the near future, I wouldn't be suprised if they returned back to rebranding their newscast as "ABC 7" Eyewitness News especially since their online presence is now "ABC 7" NY. to me it makes more sense to identify as "ABC 7" again. There is an old thread over in the New York Forum here that discussed the branding switch when it happened in 2004 (20 years ago now, wow does the time fly). Most of us came to the consensus at the time that the switch was made because the average New Yorker identified Channel 7 with the newscast. I don't think they are mandated to say "Channel 7" ocassionally reporters say "ABC 7". Another thing that WABC and the other O&Os abandoned that KABC and KGO in the north retain is the iconic "Circle 7" Pins. Every KABC and KGO on-air staffer wears it, WABC and WLS had that standard for a while, especially in the early days but dropped it I guess in the early 90s. Personally I like them, and since WABC is the top in the nation, it would be a nice honorary symbol for them.1 point

Because at the time, ABC was a strong network and often finishing #1 in primetime thanks to hits like Who Wants To Be A Millionaire and then Desperate Housewives, Lost, etc. a few years later. WABC was also trying to climb back to the top spot in news ratings after falling behind WNBC at 5pm and 6pm for the first time since the 1980s. (WNBC has just picked up Judge Judy from WCBS and Judy on Ch. 4 began beating Oprah on Ch. 7. As a result, WABC’s lost its longtime grip on the 4pm, 5pm and 6pm time slots.) Co-branding with a strong ABC made sense, and Disney/ABC wanted their owned stations branded as ABC. Eventually, ABC’s prime time hot streak ended after Millionaire was over scheduled and research found that New Yorkers never warmed up to identifying Eyewitness News with “ABC7”… it was and is identified with “Channel 7”. So, WABC reverted to Channel 7 for news branding and held on to ABC7 for non-news branding, thanks in part to Disney/ABC forcing the ABC co-branding. Because at the time of website launches, KABC was better known as ABC7 by LA area viewers. “ABC7” never existed nor caught on with New York area viewers, hence why WABC launched as 7online.com.1 point

Agreed I suppose they initially wanted to emphasize network branding more, then opted to return to their roots. Instresting observation. The the flagship NYC ABC/NBC and CW stations really don't verbally emphasize network branding. In PIX's case not even the network logo. But NYC has long been like this. Look at WABC, it barely featured the abc logo until the mid 90s. Desite the current ABC O&O streamlining they're still less identical than the 80s when they all had nearly identical sets.1 point
-
I just still am amazed they broke tradition to do that. I just wondered why.1 point
-
I could care less about news branding, but maybe WABC in New York felt more like going back to tradition considering their history & decided against ABC network branding. Not the only ones in NYC doing it as WNBC does it opting for "News 4 New York", sister NBC O&O WRC in Washington, DC does the same with "News4". Also notice the websites for the 2 ABC flagships, you'd think abc7.com would be for their main flagship, but it actually goes to KABC in L.A. while it's abc7ny.com for NYC.1 point

KABC has a different logo, wordmark, formal verbal news branding, and package color scheme. Even if the theme was 100% the same, they still wouldn't be a carbon copy of WABC.1 point

Seems like the 7-10am hours of GDLA are definitely built around Michaela. Reminds me of the old GDNY with Jim Ryan. Jim would steer the ship while tossing to his counterparts in the studio/field and conducting in studio interviews. I only watched the first block this morning. Michaela obviously knows the market, after her years at KTLA. Seemed like a breath of fresh air since the show didn't really have an identity after the sudden firing of Steve Edwards. Curious to see how the new format evolves. I buried the lead here, though! They finally got new music!!!1 point

Stu Mundel back at night in Sky Fox on the 10 PM news tonight. First time since he joined KTTV.1 point

He came to FOX 11 from KFMB, not KSWB. He's a good anchor and reporter, but I never really saw his appeal as the top anchor. When he left KFMB, they were doing very well in the mornings, his co-anchor Nichelle Medina was let go a few months after Dan left. I'm sure it was difficult for him to achieve the same chemistry/friendship at Fox 11, that he had with Nichelle for the 15 years they anchored together. Let's see what he ends up doing next...1 point

Looks like KTTV is hiring for a chief meteorologist regardless, I guess Rick may not be too keen on being confined to the weather desk. https://www.ftvlive.com/sqsp-test/2020/9/28/guess-its-official1 point

Nothing about this line up makes sense. Michaela is strong and popular in LA, but this move is the equivalent of if KTLA hired Dorothy Lucey or Steve Edwards. So much time has passed that it likely wouldn’t make a difference.1 point

KTTV is out for blood with the Michaela hire. That is a huge get! I'm a KTLA guy, but I give a tip of the hat to KTTV. KTLA better tighten things up, they have been #1 for years, but I feel sometimes their talent and formula is mailing it in I guess some could argue that "if it aint broke don't fix it..." Not a big fan of the new anchor lineup though. It seems like it is a temporary situation until someone's contract runs out. They should to the traditional 4-6 or 4-7am parings and the 7am-10am pairings. KTLA and WGN have always affectionately referred to those teams as the A team and the B team. I REALLY hope they lose that lame and outdated GDLA theme music at some point. The new FOX O&O theme is strong enough to be used on all KTTV dayparts.1 point

Another MAJOR shift at Good Day LA -- https://tvnewscheck.com/article/more-news/253378/michaela-pereira-joins-kttvs-good-day-la/ Former HLN anchor (MichaeLA!) and KTLA anchor Michaela Pereira joins Fox 11 and will anchor from 7-10AM WITH Tony and Araksya Araksya also becomes anchor from 5-7AM (Presumably with Dan? The article doesn't mention.) Rita becomes solo anchor from 4-5AM and will do live features throughout the rest So thoughts: I don't get the part about Araksya now joining the 7-10 hour, along with the new 5-7 responsibility This is a demotion for Rita Still not sure if Dan is staying or out They let Julie Chang go earlier this year and if Rita becomes the "live segments" reporter, where does this really leave Vanessa?1 point

Pablo Pereira seems to have been deleted by the station and from social media since the end of July. Rick Dickert was basically moved over from mornings to accommodate Stu Mundel, and to better use his talents, but still Pablo was around for a while, but is older so may not fit the Fox demographic. Zero coverage on any site though.1 point
