Apparently this was how bad the Disney streaming cancellations were while Kimmel was off the air:3 points

Anything Weigel does (even if it's piping in news updates from Chicago, South Bend or Milwaukee) is better than what Sinclair has been providing St. Louis viewers. They could be a wild card in markets they operate stations in alongside Sinclair or Nexstar to grab a bounced affiliation from. And if the said stations are the ones that carry their MeTV networks, that's an even bigger draw to lure in another affiliation. MeTV gets decent numbers in many places, even as subchannels. If Lilly can snag CBS from a Nexstar station and put in on a .2, it's possible. And guess what WZMQ's primary subchannel is?2 points

Weigel would have to start up a news operation and buy rights to a slate of current syndicated programming from scratch.2 points

I like all of your suggestions for Weigel-owned stations that can take the ABC affiliation from Sinstar, but for Seattle, I think the network would be better served by working out a deal with Cox and CBS to send that network to KSTW and free KIRO to take on ABC. Advantages: ABC would get an affiliate that has a well-established news department and KIRO isn't forced to become an indie station when CBS pulls its affiliation for KSTW.1 point

Here are the markets where Weigel operates where they could take over the ABC affiliation from Sinclair or Nexstar: Hartford-New Haven, CT (WHCT-LD replacing Nexstar's WTNH) Washington, DC (WDME-CD replacing Sinclair's WJLA) Rockford, IL (WFBN-LD replacing Mission's WTVO) Evansville, IN (WZDS-LD replacing Nexstar's WEHT) And the big ones.... St. Louis (KNLC replacing our favorite Sinclair doormat KDNL) Nashville (WJFB replacing Nexstar's WKRN) Salt Lake City (KCSG replacing Nexstar's KTVX) Seattle (KFOV and/or KVOS replacing Sinclair's KOMO) If only Weigel could snag a Mobile or Pensacola station, they could strip it from WEAR, they should get bonus points for their own pre-emptions over the years and being part of the WPMI/WFGX/WJTC gaggle of stations through Deerfield.1 point

Just like you, in the US, here in Brazil we're also getting our own affiliation shakeups: In Presidente Prudente, São Paulo, TV Fronteira was stripped of its TV Globo affiliation, after its owner used the station for his own benefit, during his (eventually failed) campaign for mayor of that city, which went against Globo rules (and even some legal and regulatory issues, but that's a different story). After that, TV Fronteira went independent and TV TEM, a TV Globo affiliate based in Bauru, around 270km/168mi away, started covering the area through re-transmitters (and local news coverage was severely affected, since the translators only replicate the feed from Bauru, and reports from Prudente, which were added with the station's coverage area expansion, are very limited). The moment TV Fronteira stopped broadcasting TV Globo: On the first weekday after the affiliation switch, TV TEM's midday newscast had its first block simulcast across all the group's stations, covering 60% of São Paulo state: TV Fronteira's first evening newscast as an independent station: Also losing TV Globo affiliation, after a long legal battle, is TV Gazeta, in the state of Alagoas, owned by Organização Arnon de Mello, which has among its owners former Brazilian president and currently senator Fernando Collor de Mello. TV Asa Branca, based in Caruaru, Pernambuco, took over the affiliation, through a new, full-powered station in Maceió, and the local news operation is expected to start this Wednesday (October 1st) - until then, the new station is simulcasting TV Globo Nordeste, the network's O&O station in the Recife/Olinda area, also in Pernambuco. https://g1.globo.com/pe/caruaru-regiao/noticia/2025/09/27/globo-inicia-transmissao-em-alagoas-pela-tv-asa-branca.ghtml https://noticiasdatv.uol.com.br/noticia/televisao/apos-piratear-atracoes-da-globo-em-alagoas-tv-de-collor-decide-obedecer-stf-141993 The last time TV Globo was involved in such major affiliation switches was back in 2008, when TV Leste, their then-affiliate in Governador Valadares, Minas Gerais, refused to sell out to Rede Inter TV (which owns TV Globo affiliates in three states - Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais and Rio Grande do Norte) and decided to join the RECORD (their name is in all-caps now) network. TV dos Vales (based in Coronel Fabriciano, 115km/71mi away), the RECORD affiliate covering the area, and just one year old at the time, switched to TV Globo and was eventually sold to Inter TV, becoming Inter TV dos Vales.1 point

A network correspondent based in New York City has a high cost of living and can make just as much, or sometimes more, being a weekday anchor in a market like Denver with a lower cost of living. From his post, it also seems like a very personal decision. Children are much older and in college or on their own, and the location is a place they’ve longed to live in.1 point

KOTV’s set is about to debut this evening. Set is the same that sister station KWTV has but has some tweaks such as the wall by the big 6 logo has a backdrop of Downtown Tulsa, the Bob Mills Weather Center doesn’t have the led crawl above the wall like 9’s and they have a telestrator screen for weather to use during severe weather coverage while 9 doesn’t have that.1 point

If ABC wanted KPLR, they would have had it at this point; keeping KPLR was clearly a priority for Koplar in 1994, Tribune in 2012 and probably Nexstar now1 point

I really hope in the coming days someone leaks to the press the discussions between Disney and these companies At least Nexstar didn’t put out an embarrassing statement like Sinclair saying an apology wasn’t enough, Kimmel also needed to donate money to TurningPoinyUSA Sinclair walked back basically everything in that initial press release. The Kirk special, the donation, the apology, everything1 point

Honestly I wish CBS kept the old studio 57 set from the CBS This Morning era and just enhanced that. I never quite understood why they felt the need to overhaul that. This design isn't bad though. Not sure how I feel about the "semi-virtual" look as the backdrop.1 point

NBC, CBS, and Fox are part of the services of Peacock Premium Plus, Paramount+ with Showtime and Fox One in ways that ABC isn't a part of base Hulu, as an apparent upsell for Hulu + Live TV.1 point

Again, no one in leadership positions in college sports cares. Enough of them are outright Trump supporters, and anyone else just wants their broadcasts to air, especially since they have no political commentary to speak of. The AFT is arguably somewhat meaningful, as their members are customers of various state and local teacher pension plans, but RSF can't do very much (I was surprised that they even have any Disney stock).1 point

Excuse the double post. Elex Michaelson posted on Twitter that they’re building a new set for his show at the LA bureau with a target launch in late October: While I’m here: Polo Sandoval anchored his shift from Atlanta over the weekend, hopefully this is a permanent relocation. Much better than an NY shoebox. Finally, a cap from Eleni anchoring One World from Abu Dhabi:1 point

Media literacy has always been an inside baseball thing, and the public needs a crash course ASAP!.... First lesson, all things marked FOX arent conservative. More relevant to this topic, your local station is most likely a franchise and not network owned!1 point

Meanwhile, there are people out there on social media who mean well but may be slightly confused.... So, we should punish Disney/ABC for Sinclair and Nexstar not honoring their affiliation agreements? (Also, Too-Far Carr is, last I checked, not a Disney employee.) Who wants to tell her?1 point

Even without Nexstar and Sinclair airing it, last night’s Jimmy Kimmel Live was watched by over 6 million viewers1 point

at one point, Simpsons reruns were the highest rated syndicated product on that station1 point

Watching the monologue on his first show back, and I have to say Nexstar and Sinclair look real dumb right now.1 point

I can confirm KTBS won't be boycotting Kimmel. For that matter, WICS and WDAY aren't either.1 point

Making such a move requires a lot of long-term planning and is not something that can be done overnight. This whole ordeal is very, very complex and complicated.1 point

Very well deserved. A fantastic anchor. He's been working weekends at WKMG for what feels like forever.1 point

True on that...a temporary night on cable would probably be better than coordinating subchannel networks; I'm just disappointed that unlike the UK, Canada and Australia, the Big Four networks have never really developed secondary broadcast networks (no, MyNet and pre-Nexstar CW do not count).1 point
-
I'm guessing they were losing money for a while and couldn't sustain it. KSBW is the 100-ton gorilla in the market and California doesn't bring in political dough very much, being a very one-sided state.1 point

Outside O&O markets, where Sinclair and Nexstar may not be a big factor, wouldn't that depend on the local affiliate's ownership broadcasting those sub channels?1 point

I think much of what has been discussed behind closed doors will be evident on the show tomorrow night. If Kimmel comes out in the classic form, Either Nexstar caved, or ABC just doesn't care what they think. If Kimmel comes out a bit more subdued (which I still believe all the late night hosts [Kimmel, Fallon, Colbert, Gutfeld, and Stewart] should do to some degree), it points to all parties really had a grown up productive conversation where everyone gave some concessions in exchange for some wins. Variables: The Disney+ cancellations (how many really? Who knows), How did a Family Feud rerun do in Kimmel's slot ratings-wise, Tensions through the roof, again, with bullets fired at KXTV (should have concerned everyone at the table), and do we know if any other affiliates voiced their opinion behind the scenes? Hearst? Gray? Scripps?1 point

That is my question too. They should allow their viewers choice, including self censuring by not watching. Most of them are probably asleep by then anyway.1 point
