Mrknowitall526 116 Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 Monica Malpass posted a 15 minute video of the rooftop of 6ABC - not sure why, but I watched the whole thing! She was talking to the tech guy at the station and they talked about the satellites and all that. Interesting! 1

It was a great experience to see them up close and learn abour how they work. The guy working them must love what he does. I would too. 1

SF1964 65 Posted August 5, 2016 Posted August 5, 2016 Jim Gardner is taking a 3-4 week leave of absence to have surgery on his arm/bicep. He explained it on the 6PM news earlier. http://6abc.com/news/video-jim-gardner-explains-medical-leave-/1457589/ 2
SF1964 65 Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 Not specifically related to Action News, but WPVI's Captain Noah passed away today at 90. He was a long time children's TV host. http://6abc.com/family/philadelphia-tv-pioneer-captain-noah-dies-at-age-90/1463028/
rkolsen 1685 Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 Are they doing the midnight news update that they've done in years past during the Olympics?
24994J 5619 Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 Are they doing the midnight news update that they've done in years past during the Olympics? That was before Nightline and Kimmel switched slots, so it wouldn't be as convenient this time around, and I think some in the station group only did it in 2012, anyway.
Mrknowitall526 116 Posted August 10, 2016 Posted August 10, 2016 After the 2014 Winter Olympics, though, I'm pretty sure that they were doing digital updates on the app. They're not that this year, it seems.
Action Newsroom 1299 Posted August 25, 2016 Posted August 25, 2016 So who's been filling in for Jim? Rick or Monica.
Mrknowitall526 116 Posted September 3, 2016 Posted September 3, 2016 6ABC had some sort of technical problems last night and the 11 pm show didn't come on the air until about 11:15. They posted about it on Facebook.

They posted about it on Facebook. When they came back on, Rick Williams mentioned the cause was due to a computer malfunction. I wouldn't be surprised if their ratings were still higher than the other locals during the outage. 2
rkolsen 1685 Posted September 4, 2016 Posted September 4, 2016 I guess the automation failed. I wonder if they could have gotten on air if they had a manual switcher in place? There was a tour of the station by their chief engineer on you who said that when they' were building the new facility they didn't feel the need to install costly switcher panels as everything was done by the Grass Valley automation system.

They most-likely have a redundant Ignite Client/Server set-up and/or a back-up control room. 15 minutes seems like they had to move to a different control room, load the rundowns, etc.

I believe their 10pm newscasts on WPHL come from the second control room while the 11PM show prepares. 1
Mrknowitall526 116 Posted September 22, 2016 Posted September 22, 2016 6ABC launched their own weather balloon live around 6:45 this morning. Adam Joseph made a large post about it: <iframe src="https://www.facebook.com/plugins/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2F6abcAdamJoseph%2Fposts%2F10155264550118696&width=500" width="500" height="714" style="border:none;overflow:hidden" scrolling="no" frameborder="0" allowTransparency="true"></iframe> Not sure if that link works or not. I don't really understand the purpose of this. It already came down. What good was that data? Was it just ratings hype? Cool nonetheless.

I don't really understand the purpose of this. It already came down. What good was that data? Was it just ratings hype? Cool nonetheless. It starts with just one balloon...and then it balloons into something bigger and more sinister. Larry Walters tied a bunch of weather balloons to a lawn chair and went for a flight... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=id=CFFVVo9usFY;t=30
CameraEyes 0 Posted September 25, 2016 Posted September 25, 2016 The 6abc Weather Balloon was a let down. Not really sure what the purpose was... other than hype. Their weather data is no different than any other station in Philly.
cna247 174 Posted November 8, 2016 Posted November 8, 2016 Matt's solo anchoring at noon today, while Sarah, Rick, and Monica are all out in the field.
PhillyWatch 240 Posted November 19, 2016 Posted November 19, 2016 Things got... silly, last night, during the close 1
Jess 1116 Posted November 19, 2016 Author Posted November 19, 2016 Things got... silly, last night, during the close Always love it when Jim gets to read the coming up guests for Kimmel... he almost always stumbles over some name!
Action Newsroom 1299 Posted November 19, 2016 Posted November 19, 2016 From now on, every time I hear or read Jeezy or French Montana's names, I'll always think of ol' Jim laughing like a schoolgirl after flubbing them. That'll bring some weight to them. 1
TheRolyPoly 2546 Posted November 19, 2016 Posted November 19, 2016 Things got... silly, last night, during the close I dont think I've ever seen Jim laugh that funny before. It's hard for him to laugh uncontrolably. 1
