They have soup olives in Raleigh and Fresno why would they put it in a competing station in their respective cities. Going to start calling duopolies "Soup Olives" now. That's an amazing autocorrect. WRDC is the ATSC3.0 lighthouse for Raleigh. Sinclair only has one ATSC1.0 station, WLFL. It doesn't even add to the fact that bigger effective radiated power doesn't mean the issues about the antennas in Philly had to be. The better answer they should've done is to make an translator, and/or put an simulcast on an full-power station. Gray, Tegna, Byron Allen, and Hearst are happy to grab some of them or even the parent companies of the broadcast networks might be ready to open to put more local news into streaming. GoldenShine_10 92
Now that was unexpected news. I think they realize they are boxed out based on their previous behavior. I think the standalone weaker stations (with no news operation) might be possible duopoly bait for someone else in those markets. If they didn't buy the station when Albritton put itself up for sale years ago, what makes anyone think they would even do so now? And I seriously doubt Fox would want to make WZTV & WUXP into O&Os themselves. 4 Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/13758-sinclair-broadcast-group-general-discussion/page/76/#findComment-297068 Share on other sites

ABC was interested, but Allbritton wasn't interested in making multiple deals. That said, a decade later, I don't think Disney would be interested, for modern reasons. I also doubt Sinclair would be willing to part with their largest market. 1 Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/13758-sinclair-broadcast-group-general-discussion/page/76/#findComment-297078 Share on other sites

tyrannical bastard 3931
Large markets with under-developed or decimated stations are probably going to get jettisoned. There may be hope for Pittsburgh, Raleigh/Durham, St. Louis and other large markets that have a Sinclair cellar-dweller (or two, or 3, 4....) in them. Recovering Producer 207
Time to be realistic. Don't waste your energy speculating which existing broadcasters with cap space could buy these stations. It's not happening. These station sales will be the broadcasting industry equivalent of selling bundled mortgages or medical debt. Sinclair needs cash. The companies that will purchase these assets will be private equity investors who can drain these stations dry without remorse and then hold on to them until there is another opportunity to sell the spectrum these stations broadcast on back to the federal government. 6 Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/13758-sinclair-broadcast-group-general-discussion/page/76/#findComment-297104 Share on other sites

KnoxvilleTVFanDerrick 3
If they were to sell a station in a smaller market, it would be WFXL, a FOX afilliate in Albany, Georgia. And it got me to thinking, if Gray was to acquire WFXL from Sinclair, they need to keep the FOX affiliation and restart a news operation with a 10pm newscast produced by WALB, the NBC station, to start out with. As for a major market scenario, I predict that a company such as Gray or Nexstar would acquire the Seattle ABC (KOMO) and CW (KUNS) affiliates. As for what is going to happen, this will get interesting as time progresses and I look forward to finding out who will acquire those stations. 1 Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/13758-sinclair-broadcast-group-general-discussion/page/76/#findComment-297107 Share on other sites
VHSgoodiesWA 303
I suspect the entire ex-Fisher portfolio is up for grabs. If so, who would potentially buy out these little eastern WA CBS stations? Personally, I'd love to see Scripps take it over, as they seem to have decent news product on their Montana CBS stations. But will they? Also duopoly with 2 UHFs are legal despite that Scripps did reached to 39% cap.
