scrabbleship 429 Posted January 8, 2016 Posted January 8, 2016 Wasn't another reason for him buying WLVI being more hours worth of news? No. It was largely out of spite over the falsehoods the Inside Track gals at the Herald spewed. Of course, if there was any chance of NBC getting WLVI then why would Tribune have encumbered it with a CW affiliation pre-sale?
TheRolyPoly 2592 Posted January 8, 2016 Author Posted January 8, 2016 Wasn't another reason for him buying WLVI being more hours worth of news? Nope. The only newscast that WHDH has produced since buying WLVI is the nightly 10pm newscast. No 7-9am news, no 6:30pm news, no additional weekend news, nothing.
CalItalian2 163 Posted January 8, 2016 Posted January 8, 2016 People even care about MyNetworkTV? Even Fox doesn't. KCOP/Los Angeles has been airing MyNetworkTV programming from 11 PM to 1 AM weekdays since September.
mre29 1563 Posted January 8, 2016 Posted January 8, 2016 People even care about MyNetworkTV? That may be why CBS is (likely) interested in moving the CW affiliation to WSBK. Anyone know when WLVI's affiliation agreement with the CW expires?
scrabbleship 429 Posted January 8, 2016 Posted January 8, 2016 That may be why CBS is (likely) interested in moving the CW affiliation to WSBK. Anyone know when WLVI's affiliation agreement with the CW expires? This August.

No 7-9am news, no 6:30pm news, no additional weekend news, nothing. Well I guess now that Ed Ansin has no choice but to pump more into WHDH, as for WLVI that's definitely up in the air, unless another company buys the station in which we don't know that's not an option. Especially for David Smith.
Mrtraveler01 738 Posted January 8, 2016 Posted January 8, 2016 It's on the front page of the Boston Herald on Friday. And here is a good graphic from the Boston Globe that shows the difference between the WHDH and WNEU signals.
Studio B 20 Posted January 8, 2016 Posted January 8, 2016 And that chart really says it all. You can't put anything past NBC at this point but I still don't see them actually going to WNEU considering that signal. However, we shall see.

It's not going to work with a Manchester, New Hampshire signal. They are wasting their time and money.

They are wasting their time and money. Especially where there are two spectrum bait signals that are available which would take as much work as this experiment but with the benefit of covering Boston. Back at the outset of Pax prior to Paxson buying the WABU stations, what are now WNEU and WWDP were a simulcast. Would the FCC allow this to happen again?
A3N 1002 Posted January 8, 2016 Posted January 8, 2016 I'm wondering if NBC is waiting around for CBS/WBZ to take the CW affiliation in-house as that would essentially force Ansin's hands to sell. As has been mentioned before, I doubt he wants one independent station, let alone two. He'll eventually sell. I'd say for roughly between $350-400 Million.
Rusty Muck 4405 Posted January 8, 2016 Posted January 8, 2016 Truthfully, I think NBC wants just WLVI, and WLVI alone... and they are banking on CBS making their move with the CW, taking it in-house with WSBK. Ed's not going to sell WHDH, but the question is whether or not he wants to unload WLVI for spectrum or sell it off. It's the only real win-win scenario out there. WHDH remains as "7 News" under Ed Ansin, NBC gets a full-market O&O they are craving, and CBS gets the CBS-CW duopoly they want.

Does CBS really want a CBS-CW duopoly if the alternative is having WHDH as their Boston affiliate? It's certainly a trade-off, but they will need to evaluate the benefit of (as antiquated as it sounds) a VHF station with a heavy news presence.
brianpr3 178 Posted January 8, 2016 Posted January 8, 2016 Didn't they say they will be expanding the signal?
mardek1995 200 Posted January 8, 2016 Posted January 8, 2016 Didn't they say they will be expanding the signal? NBC expanding WNEU's signal? Sounds more like something I speculated that people tried to disprove. And now that I think about it, they're better off buying WLVI and putting NBC on WNEU 60.3 (for exrtra reach in New Hampshire) than they are putting NBC on WNEU
Rusty Muck 4405 Posted January 8, 2016 Posted January 8, 2016 Didn't they say they will be expanding the signal? What signal? WNEU's? Read back in the thread for why it simply can't happen.
cbs4dallas 17 Posted January 8, 2016 Posted January 8, 2016 Learning from this whole situation in Boston... I guess this means that WXIA Atlanta(DMA 9) and KPRC Houston(DMA 10) should watch out for the big bad wolf, NBC, wanting to eat up the rest of their top 10 market affiliates, and have all of them become O&Os . :-/

If Ed's quotes are to be taken at face value, they are preparing for the likelihood of WHDH becoming an independent. That's not to say they wouldn't pick up MyTV, but MyTV is not something to build a station around... and I wouldn't run it in primetime.

Breaking News 839 Posted January 8, 2016 Posted January 8, 2016 But aren't they decently strong NBC affiliates? WXIA been in 3rd place for most of it history in Atlanta, and KPRC ratings seems to go up and down. Also so with NECN one would think Kenny Plotnik would become the News Director at NBC Boston since he helms over at NECN?

Fox should dismantle the name and let the affiliates run whatever programming they want?
TVNewsLover 787 Posted January 8, 2016 Posted January 8, 2016 Why is MyTV still there? Will Fox should dismantle the name and let the affiliates run whatever programming they want? "Will Fox should dismantle the name....." -- what does that even mean? If you mean dismantle the service, then the stations that carry the MNTV programming are no longer affiliates and they can do as they wish (they do not need Fox to "let" them run whatever they want).
rkolsen 1686 Posted January 8, 2016 Posted January 8, 2016 I find it a bit interesting that Ed is saying that moving the signal to WNEU will violate Comcast's agreement with the FCC with serving the community of license by citing the loss of signal coverage. If that's the case WHDH isn't serving its DMA as its signal isn't good in New Hampshire. Hopefully you'll understand what I'm saying. I wasn't sure how to articulate my thoughts.
TVNewsLover 787 Posted January 8, 2016 Posted January 8, 2016 But aren't they decently strong NBC affiliates? Weren't KRON in the SF Bay Area and WHDH in Boston. Why is that relevant?
