Eat News 4745
This moved on the wire .. SD KFMB Sale Eds: Elisabeth is correct. Anne Bentley at Tegna can be reached at (703) 873-6366 or [email protected]. Patricia Elwood at Midwest Television can be reached at (858) 495-9392. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Family owned for more than a half century, KFMB-TV and its co-owned San Diego radio stations are being sold to national broadcast company Tegna for $325 million, the McLean, Virginia-based purchaser announced today. Tegna used to be part of Gannett, but was spun off as the owner of the media firm's broadcasting operations in 2015. Tegna owns 46 TV stations throughout the nation, making it one of the largest owners of broadcast properties. The name Gannett remained with the firm that ended up owning print publications, including USA Today. Tegna is acquiring KFMB-TV, the longtime affiliate of the CBS network broadcasting on Channel 8. The station also just started an affiliation with The CW network on a digital channel and cable. The sale also includes rock station KFMB-FM and talk station KFMB-AM, all from family-owned Midwest Television, pending regulatory approval by the Federal Communications Commission. Tegna praised KFMB-TV's ``dedicated colleagues'' who have made the station a ratings success. The San Diego TV market is the country's 29th largest, with 1.1 million households. It is the 17th largest radio market. ``This transaction is a testament to the outstanding value our employees have created serving the San Diego community,'' Midwest owner Elisabeth Kimmel said. ``Having owned these properties for over 55 years, our family believed it imperative to find an excellent steward for television and radio stations that the community has embraced as part of the fabric of San Diego.'' Tegna's 46 TV stations are in 38 markets. Its stations reach about one- third of all television households nationwide, according to the company. ``We have long admired our dedicated colleagues in San Diego and look forward to continuing the stations' high-quality journalism, editorial independence and commitment to their local community,'' said Dave Lougee, Tegna's president and chief executive. The deal is expected to close in the first quarter of 2018. JCB4TV 347
Come on TEGNA, now come to Oklahoma and acquire KFOR and save them from the Tribune/Sinclair merger, just like you just did with KFMB. Eat News 4745
The last time that happened was in the late 70s after Gannett acquired Combined Communications. On that transaction they got KSDO am 1130 (all news...now christian) and KEZL 102.9 FM (Beautiful Music...now latino) in San Diego. Just a dumb factoid I remember that has no bearing on squat. AJClementeFan69 477
Could be a lot worse (Sinclair), but prepare to see a lot of veterans let go and young, cheap, will-work-for-pennies MMJs (I mean "MSJ"s) hired. Contrary to what another poster said, Tegna has changed quite a bit at the ex-Belo stations. They weren't immune from the buyouts, and the ratings at WFAA and WWL, for example, have suffered quite a bit since the change. No longer are they dominant #1s. That's not to say the other stations in the market haven't caught up, but they're no longer leading the way and have cheaped out on a lot of things. They have MMJs at WFAA now for crying out loud. I totally forgot about that format. Nice sticker...good catch and save. I have a whole briefcase full of them going back to the 70's that I would love to scan and post somewhere. I wish I had an original B-100 Boogie ball...but I do posses an original KPRI-FM 106 Coke sticker...ya know the one that everybody altered to PRIK-106.. KOME....KLOS... Sorry I'm really drifting off topic now. Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/16135-kfmb-san-diego-goes-to-tegna/page/2/#findComment-191839 Share on other sites

Rusty Muck 4378
Gannett sold its last radio stations in the late 1990s. They didn't have many radio stations, but they had some big ones, like KIIS/KIIS-FM, WGCI/WGCI-FM and WCZY. Gannett trademarked "KISS FM" for KIIS in the 1980s, that trademark was later used by Jacor and Clear Channel to bring "KISS FM" as a proprietary brand, save for legacy markets like Washington DC, Austin and New York. More specifically, Gannett sold off their last radio stations in April 1997. channel2 979
I admit, I'm not sure why people are surprised at the price tag. WTVF sold for a pretty penny five years ago and that was in a similarly-sized market. promoguy98 253
Wow! I wonder what will happen NXT. It can't be good, considering they can't afford the letter E from their font collection! Haaa tegna and their trendy shit, making sure they destroy some of America's legacy stations and make laughing stocks of stations that had a fighting chance to rise in the ratings. I'm pretty sure that new look and all of their on-going garbage will help flop the ratings even more on WWL. As for KFMB...... lots of reductions in head counts and "NXT" fonts to come. Sad! Speaking of NXT, maybe their hack-job, underpaid consultant keeps a fresh pack of Marlboro NXT's around, so maybe that's where the NXT inspiration came from? Yeah, using Marlboro's research is cool and trendy and will hook those kids right in while they're still young Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/16135-kfmb-san-diego-goes-to-tegna/page/2/#findComment-191865 Share on other sites
Conrad 113
Now San Diego is "all within reach" (even though Gannettegna no longer uses this slogan and New Gannett now uses it). Gannettegna is one of my favorite ownership groups. I even have the Deathstar as my profile picture. As for that "certain" ownership group touring KFMB... that was Sincrap. They chose to keep KSWB in the future. Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/16135-kfmb-san-diego-goes-to-tegna/page/2/#findComment-191866 Share on other sites

Conrad 113
Good News Sinclair didn't get the station. I was hoping Meredith or Hearst. Oh well- http://www.ftvlive.com/sqsp-test/2017/12/19/tegna-buys-socal-station Neither did Nexstar. Maybe Meredith or Hearst could get KNSD if NBC is willing to sell. If Meredith, that means soon there would be 3 common owners between two cities over 5 hours apart (San Diego and Phoenix): Scripps: KGTV and KNXV TEGNA: KFMB and KPNX Meredith: KNSD and KPHO/KTVK And another pair of two cities about 5 hours apart (San Diego and Las Vegas) Scripps: KGTV and KTNV Meredith: KNSD and KVVU Sinclair: KSWB and KSNV/KVCW That could pressure KFMB and KNSD into swapping affiliations. San Diego will already have 3 common owners with Denver: Scripps: KGTV and KMGH TEGNA: KFMB and KUSA Sinclair: KSWB and KDVR/KWGN (or KWGN only if Fox gets KDVR back) Fox is also reportedly interested in KSWB. If that happens, KSWB and KSAZ would also be under common ownership, leaving San Diego and Phoenix with 4 common owners (there would already be 3 in this scenario)! Also, San Diego and Atlanta would have 3 common owners if Meredith were to get KNSD: TEGNA: KFMB and WXIA/WATL Meredith: KNSD and WGCL/WPCH Fox: KSWB and WAGA Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/16135-kfmb-san-diego-goes-to-tegna/page/2/#findComment-191870 Share on other sites
